IT IS DONE! All fanfics from our Nick&Greg archive What Makes The Desert Beautiful (WMTDB) are now imported to our AO3 collection!
Go check it out: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/WhatMakesTheDesertBeautiful

In 30 days all unclaimed fics will be unlocked, in total there have been over 2000 stories posted since 2004 \o/

Big thanks to the OTW's Open Doors volunteers who helped realise this transfer behind the scenes. It's been a process of a couple of years, and I'm very happy our little fandom's big history is now safely stored on AO3 :-)

Don't forget to leave Kudos and Comments if you've enjoyed a fic!

Your NicknGreg mod,
BeeLikeJ

P.S. The WMTDB website will still be up for a while as well; final step of the process is to hand over the domain to AO3:-)

Hello everyone :-)

Just a head's up for everyone who noticed that the WMTDB (nickandgreg.net) is currently unavailable. I received a notification of malware, which I suspect is because of the sudden increase in traffic to the site. As a precaution, our server provider has locked the site temporarily to give us a chance to look into the issue.

As you know, I'm working with the Open Doors Project of the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) to move the WMTDB archive to Archive of Our Own (AO3). We have made a complete back-up of the site, so all content is safe, nothing is lost.

In the past few weeks, we've sent out mails to all creators in the WMTDB archive; if you haven't received a mail, contact me! (As the WMTDB goes back all the way to 2003, your email address may have changed over the years;) You can also find information in the sticky-post here on how you can help the proces.

Since I first reached out to Open Doors in the Summer of 2021, it's been a long time sorting stuff out behind the scenes, but things have now really been set in motion for everyone to see! You can read up on the OTW news page, that has all the information as well as a link to our new home at AO3: OTW_News about WMTDB

It would be great if you could spread the word on Twitter and Tumblr.

If you have any questions, you can leave a comment or mail me:)

Hello everybody,

This is a message especially for What Makes the Desert Beautiful authors, I hope at least some of you are still around on Dreamwidth! I have posted this on our Livejournal and Tumblr and on WMTDB as well. Please spread the word if you can, to reach as many authors as possible:).

Because I have BIG NEWS: What Makes the Desert Beautiful is going to be imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3)! The WMTDB archive was built with an old fashioned eFiction script and after nearly 18 years it is no longer maintainable to keep the website running because of this outdated system and its security issues. So to ensure safekeeping of all fanfics, I have decided to move them to AO3.

I have contacted the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) for assistance in moving the What Makes the Desert Beautiful archive’s content to a collection on the multi-fandom archive they maintain, the Archive of Our Own (AO3), and set up automatic redirects for any future readers following old links. (Specifically, I will be working with the Open Doors committee. You can read about their recent import projects at this link.)

Here is where I would like to ask for your help!

1. If you already have an AO3 account and have posted your What Makes the Desert Beautiful works there, please let me know your nickandgreg.net pseud(s) and e-mail address(es) as well, so that we won’t import your stories. (There is a tutorial on the Open Doors website with instructions for mass-adding stories to the new collection on the AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/WhatMakesTheDesertBeautiful)

2. If you don’t already have an AO3 account but would like one to import your stories yourself, please let me know your nickandgreg.net pseud(s), and the preferred e-mail address to send the AO3 invite to. (There is a tutorial on the Open Doors website with instructions for importing stories and adding them to the new collection on the AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/WhatMakesTheDesertBeautiful)

3. If you would NOT like your works moved, please send me your nickandgreg.net pseud(s) and e-mail address(es) so that we will not add them. (If you would not mind them being preserved but do not want your name attached to them any longer, please let me know that too—we can orphan your works instead of leaving them behind to be deleted.)

We’ll be collecting responses over the next several weeks before we start importing works. All works imported on a creator’s behalf will be attributed with their name in the summary of the work. As we import works, we will e-mail notifications to the address associated with the work. (If you know of any authors that no longer have access to their nickandgreg.net e-mail address, please tell them to contact me directly.)
When all stories have been accounted for, the Open Doors committee will set up the URL redirects, and I will permanently close down the site. (Even though this whole process will take a while, please don't postpone getting in touch!)

Please let me know if you have any questions, and thanks!

Hello y'all:)

Happy New Year!
It was quite a rollercoasterride for Nick & Greg in 2015 and we're sad there won't be any more new CSI episodes, but we have 15 years of great memories. Hopefully these will continue to be treasured and build upon by our little fandom.
We know there are still new people discovering our favorite CSIs, because our NicknGreg Tumblr is growing steady with new followers every day! (Even if some of the other N/G-fandom-corners are quiet that's the place to go for a daily dose of our guys:)

NOTICE
This weekend we'll be doing some maintenance on our fic archive What Makes The Desert Beautiful and the site may be down for a couple of hours. We'll let y'all know when we're done. If you notice anything wonky, tell us in the comments:)

Hello everyone,

after a couple of days of checking issues that came up with transferring the site to a new host and a day of fixing the archaic coding, we managed to get our WMTDB-fanfic archives accessible again. \o/ We are currently running on a mirror site for final testing, but the address remains the same now and in the future: www.nickandgreg.net

Come over and log in to upload stories or comment. You don't need to register if you just want to browse the archives -alfabetically by story or author- and read;)

If you do run into any problems, let us know! Thanks for your patience and support.

Happy writing and reading!

Hello everyone,

Apparently the transfer of the wmtdb site to a new host didn't go as smoothly as we hoped. We are currently working like crazy behind the scenes of What Makes The Desert Beautiful to get things rolling again. The 60 day lock on the transfer has been lifted a couple of days ago and after the required reconsideration period (five days) we finally have complete access to the site for administration again. We planned all the promised maintenance within the next week.
There will be a mod-post as soon as I can guarantee the wmtdb is fully functional again.

Meanwhile you can get your NicknGreg fix on
  • our Tumblr (a classic scene every day!)
  • our YouTube (hundreds of fanvids!) and
  • the Nick/Greg corner of CSI Slash (fanfic archive:)

  • Our apologies for the inconvenience, thanks for your continued support!

    Hello everyone,

After a lot of dealings behind the scenes, we can finally give you a proper update on WMTDB, our NicknGreg fanfic archive.

In november 2014 we ran into some issues with our hosting company, when they changed coding without notifying us, resulting in problems with the functionality of the site. Unfortunately even after numerous attempts, we weren't able to contact them and we had to resort to making our own repairs. We were relieved we managed to at least get the site back up and running, but not so happy with the lack of communication and help from our host. After only hearing from them when it was time to renew our contract, we decided to move to another company.
The transition will take place in the first week of May and shouldn't be noticable for users, but just in case you can't reach the site around that time, know that we are working on it!

After we update our settings, we will finally be able to truly fix the coding and have a fully functional archive again. This is where you can help us out: so far we are aware of the problems with the alphabet search and the log in process; if you ran or run into any other issues, please let us know!

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to comment or mail us: nickngreglj@gmail.com

We're happy to report the Nick&Greg story-archive What Makes The Desert Beautiful is getting back on its feet after the tumble it took last week.
Apparently TPTB changed some background-coding for maintenance reasons and in the process accidently hid all the authors and stories!

We are still working on a couple of issues; alphabetized indexing as well as problems with registering and logging in are not fixed yet. BUT! All the stories are accessible so woohoo!

We'll let you know when the site is fully functional again, until then... happy reading!

If you come across anything wonky, please let us know. We want to thank everyone who brought the fall out to our attention and hope we can prevent this from happening in the future:)

We're pretty sure there will actually be a new episode tonight. If the Sunday schedule is still confusing to you, don't worry, you can go back to talk about last week's episode and the rest of Season 15 anytime:)
Now, let's see if both our boys are working tonight...

    S15Ep06: The Twin Paradox

Did the episode make you jump for joy or do you want to stomp your feet in frustration? Feel free to join in whenever you watch the episode! Comment to swoon or rant about Nick & Greg scenes or the lack thereof...

P.S. We are working on the issue with our wmtdb-archive. In the meantime, check out these other sources for a dose of fanfic: CSI Slash has a cozy NicknGreg corner and in our favorite fic tag there are links to author-journals and other story-collections. If you have additional tips for reading, let us know!

    Hello everybody,

Well, it took a lot of e-mailing back and forth and even a transcontinental phonecall, but we managed to get the suspension sorted and our NicknGreg story archive What Makes The Desert Beautiful (WMTDB) is back online, yay!

All the stories are still there and the easy access upload functions should be working again as well, so if you want to read or share some fanfic, Go check it out!

Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] shacky20 for taking care of all the fanfic in the past eight years. From now on I will keep an eye on the administration. I already have experience with the technical bits from cleaning up behind the scenes in 2011, but will now also handle financial contact with the hosting company.
Keeping a site up costs money, so I've decided to use my funds wisely and no longer pay for the NicknGreg Livejournal. Our paid account expires in September 2014, after that we'll return to a free account. (Ofcourse donations for either site are more than welcome;-)

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to PM or mail me!

    Happy reading:)

We must admit we had expected more comments after last week... Let's hope tonights episode inspires some good ol' fangirling* :-)

    S14Ep10: Girls Gone Wild

Let's get together and swoon about scenes between Nick and Greg or feel free to rant about the lack thereof. Did the episode make you jump for joy or do you want to stomp your feet in frustration? Get it off your chest here!

    * Stating the obvious, but fangirling is ofcourse not limited to girls. We welcome anyone who wants to squee about the chemistry between Nick & Greg :-D

P.S. We are aware of the WMTDB being offline and have contacted the webmaster; sadly we don't know what caused the suspension of the website yet. We will keep you posted!
    [identity profile] nickngregmod.livejournal.com

Sorry this response post is up a little late again, but you don't need to hold your comments about last night's episode in any longer! We think there are a couple of issues that need to be addressed... (If you're still catching up go here for the previous episode discussion).

As usual the title is behind a cut and we ask you to avoid spoilers of future events in the comments. This is the place to talk about whatever is on your mind about Nick and Greg's latest adventures, whether it's text or subtext *grins*

You can get your dose of fic through the Nick&Greg corner at CSI Slash or browse our Reclists and Blast From the Past posts for stories outside the archives:)

Nope, still no new CSI episode this week, so to make sure you get your dose of dudes, we uploaded three new fanvideos at our very own NicknGreg YouTube! Filled with lots of classic scenes between our guys, accompanied by -very- different songs for every mood, made by [livejournal.com profile] clarrisani, Loki and [livejournal.com profile] r_sambora_luvr

These used to be stored in the WMTDB archives, where you can still find a whole collection of fanfic (including for example two by r_sambora_luvr and loads more by Jedi Princess Clarrisani:)

See? Even without TV there is still plenty of LOVE to be found!

If you have some Nick/Greg fun to share, don't be shy!

We'll be back next week with a new episode discussion post, or maybe sooner with some exciting news...

    The mods

P.S. You don't need to subscribe to watch the Nick/Greg YouTube channel, but if you do, you get notifications as soon as we post more goodies:) So far we uploaded 75 videos! (Note that not all of them are available in certain parts of the world due to copyright issues)

hi, is the web page what makes the desert beautiful down for the count? tried to get to the page, but all i got was that dosent exist, what is happining?
    [identity profile] nickngregmod.livejournal.com
Yay, we added three videos to our YouTube:
Basketcase - a Nick vid focussing on the events in Stalker (S2) and Grave Danger (S5) made by Fieldmouse in 2005.

Am I Sexy - a Greg vid about his dancing days in the lab and his first steps out in the field, also made by Fieldmouse in 2005.

Don't Wanna Miss A Thing - a Nick/Greg vid with favorite moments by Gibson from 2006.

All these fanvideos were originally saved in the WMTDB archives, where you can still find a whole collection of fanfiction. Not only are there tons of classic stories, but the archives are also regularly updated with new fic! If you're an author, you can upload your own Nick/Greg stories: registering is free and super easy!

We'd love to enjoy all of your stories, videos, artwork and thoughts on Nick & Greg, so if you have anything to share, post it in the community! We welcome long and short stories, drabbles, screencaps, icons, wallpapers, favorite quotes, fanvids; anything Nick/Greg! Make sure to put anything related to S13 behind an LJ-cut.

Are you watching the new season already? Come join our episode discussions every Wednesday :-)

    Hello authors!

May we suggest a New Year's resolution? Why not register to the WMTDB fanfic archives to share and store your Nick/Greg stories? Too scary or complicated, you say? Well, here's a handy step by step explanation, complete with illustrations!
Readers, lurkers, this might come in handy for you too, if you want to show your support to fandom and give feedback to authors:)

How to be a part of the WMTDB archives )You keep control over your own stories!!

The WMTDB archives have been the home of Nick/Greg fanfic since the beginning of our fandom: you'll find loads of classic stories there. New stories are featured on the home-page.

If you have any questions about the WMTDB archives, go the Help-section to contact the site-moderator or leave a comment on this post:)

    See you in the archives!

    Hello all!

We managed to do a lot of cleaning up at WMTDB and recovered the whole collection of fanvids that were archived between 2005 and 2007! We had to remove these from the site because they took up a lot of space and bandwidth (more than 1.8 GB!). BUT... do not despair; we will share them on our NicknGreg YouTube channel \o/

In fact, to make up for the lack of a new CSI episode this week, we uploaded an extra bunch of fanvids today: Go check them out!

In additional news: there were a couple of new stories uploaded on wmtdb this week! We encourage all authors in this fandom to follow [livejournal.com profile] postnotice's example. It's really easy to share your stories at What Makes The Desert Beautiful. Simply click on the 'log in' option. From there you can register a pen name and begin uploading stories.

Of course we also hope you share your fanworks in the community, but wouldn't it be great, if we could keep the archives growing for future Nick/Greg fans? Believe it or not: there are still new people joining in every month! Have you introduced yourself yet? :-)

Thank you all for sharing your stories, videos and love!
