A/N: Man, you lot must be fucking sick of me by now, right? :p This is a fic with JUST Nick and Greg, which is a major first for me, let me tell you.

Disclaimer: Everything belongs to its respectful owner; I am making no profit off of this whatsoever.

“Sometimes I think I should learn how to dance,” Greg muses out-loud, his eyes focused on the television where a red-haired Nicole Kidman shakes her ass for a couple dozen men, wearing a very shiny silver costume and top hat while singing a Marilyn Monroe song.

Nick glances up from his forensics journal. “You do know how to dance, G,” he says quietly. “You do it very well at clubs and parties.”

“No, I mean real dancing,” Greg protests. “Like that.” He gestures to the TV screen. Nicole Kidman pulls Ewan McGregor onto the floor where everyone does a synchronized dance. “You know. Like ballroom dancing. I think I should have learned it.”

“I learned how to ballroom dance,” Nick tells him and Greg takes a swig of his beer.

“Bullshit.”

“I shit you not. My mom made all of us learn. My five sisters, my brother and me. Even my cousins.” Nick grins.

Greg raises a skeptical eyebrow. “I don’t believe you. What did you learn?”

Nick shrugs. “Lots. I learned how to waltz, tango, the frug, I can quickstep-”

“Can you pole dance?”

“No, I can’t pole dance,” Nick admits, laughing a little.

“Lap dance?”

“You know I can do a mean lap dance, man.”

“Belly dance?”

“Greg-”

“You have fantastic abs. You should really learn.”

Nick raises his eyebrows. “I’m pretty sure men don’t belly dance. Why do you suddenly want to dance? Is it because of this seizure-inducing movie?”

“No,” Greg answers. “It’s because, you know at junior high and high school dances? When you’d dance with a girl and you’d just… stand there and shuffle. I always wanted to do real dances, you know? So it wouldn’t be just stand and shuffle and turn sometimes.”

“Why are you thinking about this now?” Nick asks.

Greg shrugs. “I dunno. I just want to dance. Really dance, though.”

Standing up, Nick offers Greg his hand. “Come on. I’ll teach you.”

“Little late for that, man,” Greg mumbles, but Nick drags him to his feet. When Nick moves to turn off the TV, Greg whines and says, “We haven’t even gotten to the best part yet.” Nick mutes it and puts on a CD, something that Greg doesn’t recognize. It’s soft and gentle, beautiful. “What is this?”

Shh,” Nick murmurs, putting one of Greg’s hands on his back, on his shoulder blades, and holds Greg’s other hand in his own. Then he laughs. “This is gonna be hard. You’re a few inches taller than me.”

“I could crouch.”

“No, that would just make this harder. Okay, we’ll start with a waltz. It’s easy.” Nick demonstrates the steps and asks Greg to follow. “No, no, I lead you. I’m the man.” Greg pouts and Nick kisses him, grinning. “No pouting or we’ll stop.” He guides Greg through the steps again.

“This is kind of complicated,” Greg mumbles when he steps on Nick’s foot. “Oh, sorry. How old were you when you learned how to do this?”

Nick shrugs. “Since I was about nine. Ow, G!”

“I didn’t mean to!” Greg protests, because he’s just stepped on Nick’s foot again. “Maybe I just can’t dance.”

Nick chuckles. “Cath told me about you dancing in the showgirl’s headdress.”

“Yes, well, that was freestyle,” Greg tells him, smiling at the memory. “I was really weird then, wasn’t I?”

“And you aren’t now?” At Greg’s appalled face, Nick adds, “Wouldn’t love you any other way.”

Greg smiles fondly and presses his face into the crook of Nick’s neck. He can sort of make out some of the lyrics and he grins wider. Anyone who’s ever had a heart wouldn’t turn around and break it and Heavenly wine and roses seem to whisper to me when you smile. “I love you, Nicky,” he whispers.

“I love you, too, G,” Nick mumbles, rubbing Greg’s back.

After a few minutes, Nick gives up trying to teach Greg how to do real ballroom dancing, deciding to leave that for another day and they revert to the “stand and shuffle, occasionally turning in circles” dancing, but neither seem to mind.

end

Note for the morbidly interested: The song Nick puts on to teach Greg how to dance is the Cowboy Junkies’ cover of “Sweet Jane”, originally by the Velvet Underground. You can listen to it here. It’s strikingly beautiful and also plays during the end of the season seven episode of the same name. For some reason, I see Nick as a big CJ fan.
