Ok, got some questions about the shifts and how things go. I love the show but I didnt start watching religiously until this season, though I'm currently making use of Spike TVs repeats and my friends DVDs to catch up.

So what I wanna know is...do we know the exact times of the shifts? How long they last, when they start and end? Are there only three shifts? Day Swing and Night? Do doubles and triples actually mean twice and thrice their usual hours?

If anyone knows, or if we've only been given vague answers, I'd love any help at all. This is for a fic and I'd like to be as certain as possible.

Up until this season only day shift and night shift were ever mentioned, therefore most of us assumed each shift was 12 hours, 8 to 8 or something.

Then, this season swing shift suddenly appeared. Nick mentioned that he was working 4 to midnight, which would make it an 8-hour shift. So swing shift would be 4pm-midnight, night shift would be midnight-8am, and day shift would be 8am-4pm.

Of course, on the show there's a lot of overlapping of shifts and people from swing shift and night shift always seem to be at work at the same time (though you never really see anyone from dayshift) so the times are fuzzy.

And they've never said if doubles and triples are actually two to three times their usual hours, but I generally go on the assumption that they are.

The times they work are really very fuzzy in canon, so nobody's going to bitch you out if you get a detail wrong, since there aren't really many specific shift details TPTB have given us.

In reality, there are three shifts; each 10 hours long. Night runs 10-8, Day runs 6-4, Shift runs 2-12. They overlap by two hours so that everybody can stay caught up on everything (I think). These shifts lack lunch hours, from what I can tell -- I know my brother-in-law is a cop, and theirs do, as well. Eat-as-you-can-catch-it. They work four on, three off. ^_^ I think.. *scrounges around for a link*
