"When can we pick her up?"
A young woman at the tender age of nineteen lay in a hospital bed, a tiny baby girl sleeping softly in her arms. A tired smile graced her features as the nurse looked over at her. "Tell them they can pick her up whenever they like." With a sigh, she closed her eyes, fingertips grazing the tuft of golden hair on her baby's head. The nurse watched in sympathy, knowing eyes filled with tears.
"Ya'll can pick her up whenever you like." She lowered her voice. "But please, hurry. She ain't got long before her mother slips away due to her health. This baby needs a family fast."
"We'll be there first thing in the morning.""Thank you. We'll see you then." With that, the nurse hung up. She quietly walked over to the hospital bed and sat on the edge. The tiny baby stirred and shifted, cooing and blowing bubbles through her lips as she got more comfortable. The nurse started to cry, silent tears slipping down her cheeks as she thought about that little girl growing up and not knowing who her mother was. The poor girl came in by herself, saying she was in labor, and that she had no family; she had been kicked out, cut off. The town of Scottsborough, Alabam wasn't a friendly town when it came to teen pregnancies.
The nurse pushed back a lock of scraggly blonde hair and bright green eyes opened. "Sorry, sweety. Go back to sleep."
"No, I'm okay." She carefully sat up, careful not to wake the sleeping child. "When are they comin'?"
"First thing tomorra mornin'. She's gonna have a real nice family. These boys really want a child and I just know she's gonna be loved like you already love her."
"Thank you for helping me. I don't know what I would've done without you these nine months." She gazed down at her beautiful baby. She lightly traced the baby's face with a soft fingertip, smooth skin that will never be forgotten by mother and child.
"Anything, dear. Anything." The nurse smiled and a hand came to rest on the teenager's pale cheek. "What're you gonna name 'er?"
A thoughtful expression on her face, the young mother answered, "Amelia. Her name's Amelia."

Nick's knee bounced slightly as he and Greg waited for their flight to be called. All he could think about was what they were about to do, where they were about to go, who they were going to meet for the first time. "Nicky." A hand landed on his knee and he glanced up, meeting Greg's eyes for the first time since they arrived at the airport. "Why are you so nervous?"
Nick stood, letting Greg's hand fall. He started to pace back and forth in front of the chairs. "G, we're going to get a baby. A baby. Why else would I be nervous?" Greg chuckled, latching on to Nick's wrist and standing up. He stopped Nick from pacing and, looking around, pulled him into a soft kiss. Nick sighed and dropped his head to Greg's chest, arms hanging limply by his side. Greg just let him, thinking about how Nick really reminded him of a five year old at the moment. "I just don't...I don't want this to all go wrong. We both want this so badly and if it goes wrong then I don't know what I would do." Nick confessed, voice muffled by Greg's heavy jacket.
"Nick, things are going to be perfectly fine." Greg grabbed Nick's shoulders and gently pushed Nick away. He was chewing on his bottom lip, eyes flicking back forth in obvious worry.
Nick just wanted it all to go smoothly. The two of them had waited so long for this to happen-almost a year-and now that they were finally getting it he was worried it would all go down the drain. The process of getting where they are now seemed to take forever and it just had to go perfect. Nick wanted it to go perfectly and smoothly. It just had to.
"Flight 115A to Scottsborough, Alabama now boarding at Gate 4. Now boarding at Gate 4."
Greg reached over and grabbed their bags off the floor. He grabbed Nick's hand and together they headed for the terminal.

Ten Hours Later....
Greg cut the engine in front of the local hospital of Scottsborough and they sat there, staring. Nick took in a deep breath, letting it out shakily. Greg didn't have to look to find Nick's shaking hand. "It'll be okay." he whispered, breath fogging up the window. He took the keys out of the ignition, let go of Nick's hand, and got out. Nick sat there for a second, glancing in the rearview mirror at the newborn car seat, a diaper bag bulging with baby things sitting next to it. His door opened and Greg was hauling him out of the truck. Once his feet touched the cement, he wobbled and swayed before catching himself and taking another deep breath. "Come on."
Greg took Nick's hand, just like in the airport ten hours away, and they headed for the front doors of the hospital. The doors slid open and a bell dinged. The receptionist at the front desk looked up and smiled. "What can I help ya boys with?" she asked in a thick country accent.
"Um, could you point us to Janice East's room?" Greg asked uncertaintly.
"Yes. Just follow me boys." She walked around the desk and motioned for them to follow her. They turned down a short hallway and in silence walked to the very end of it. "Here ya go. Just take yer time." She smiled warmly before leaving.
When she was out of sight, Greg pulled Nick into a short hug. Nick relaxed for a moment before Greg pulled away and pressed a kiss to his lover's lips. "Let's do this." Nick's mouth lifted into a half-smile. Greg gave him another kiss, then pulled away and knocked on the door. Light footsteps, almost inaudible, came from the other side. The door opened seconds later and a kind face full of wrinkles peered out.
"Hey there." she whispered. She opened the door wider and motioned for them to come inside the room. Greg smiled and she smiled back. "Glad you could come so early. Poor Janice is getting weaker by the second." She pointed to the hospital bed where Janice lay, pale and weak, breathing harsh and beads of sweat on her brow. Greg patted the nurse's hand and tears welled up in the elder woman's eyes. "Would you like to meet your daughter?" she asked suddenly, catching them off guard.
"Uh, yeah. Please." Nick said, surprising himself and Greg that he could even speak at the moment. The nurse led them over to a tiny crib in the corner of the room. The two of them stepped up to the side of the crib and peered down at the tiny sleeping baby. "She's beautiful." Nick breathes, automatically taken by this little baby he hasn't even held yet. Greg squeezes his shoulder and Nick looks over his shoulder with tears in his eyes. The nurse leans over and gently, carefully picks up the baby girl and hands her to Nick. He takes her and cradles her and stares at her face, a smile on his own.
"Has Janice named her yet?" Greg asks, not breaking his gaze on their new addition.
"Amelia."
Nick smiles even brighter when he hears that. "I like that. You like that?" he asks Greg and flicks his eyes up to Greg's. He nods, a grin on his face and happy tears shining in his eyes.
A moan distracts them from Amelia and they turn their heads. Janice opens her eyes and sees the two standing there and she manages a small smile. The nurse rushes over and urges Janice to stay lying down, but Janice protests. "I want to see my baby one more time. And I want to officially meet the new parents. Come over here." she says weakly. Greg and NIck timidly go over to her bed and stand there awkwardly. She reaches for the bundle in Nick's arms and Nick hands Amelia over. Janice holds her tightly but gently against her chest, whispering words they can't hear. Once she's done, she hands Amelia to Greg and then turns her full attention to them. "So you two are Nick and Greg." They nod and she smiles again. "Amelia's going to grow up just fine without me. I can see that now."
"Thank you for letting us do this. We promise we'll take excellent care of her." Greg says sincerely and Janice can see it both of their eyes that it's true.
"I know." With a pitiful moan she lays back down in the bed, closing her eyes and sighing. "I'm sorry I can't take care of her. But I'm only nineteen and dying at that. Even if I wasn't, I wouldn't be able to take care of her. I have no more family since they kicked me out, but you already knew that. I can't get a job because most people here despise teenage pregnancy. She would grow up poor and in an unhealthy environment. I couldn't live with that. But you two....you two are something special. I knew it the minute Miss Annie over there told me ya'll were looking to adopt. So I figured 'Why not?'." As she spoke her voice became weaker and weaker.
The nurse, that Greg and Nick now knew as Annie, sniffled and pushed back some hair from Janice's sweaty forehead. Greg looked away and down at Amelia. She stirred and he nudged Nick's shoulder right when she opened her eyes. Nick smiled as those big, round, green eyes blinked up at he and Greg. Her face scrunched up, like she was about to cry, but then softened when Nick smoothed his knuckles over her cheek. She cooed and dribbled a little and Greg and Nick had never felt so happy. Janice muttered something about finally seeing her baby's eyes before closing her own, breathing out an "I love you." A drawn out beep signaled she was no longer alive.
Greg forced his eyes away from the scene as the nurse pushed a button on the monitor and proceeded to write something on Janice's chart. Time of Death: Eight-Thiry Five A.M.
"We're sorry." Nick said quietly and patted the nurse on the shoulder, then squeezed it sympathetically. She sniffed and nodded, grabbing the thin sheet and covering the rest of Janice's body. "Would you like us to go?"
"Please. If it's not too much trouble. There's a motel a couple of blocks down the street. If ya'll don't mind. I've got to call her family and tell them the news." Annie wiped tears from her cheeks. The boys hugged her quickly, let her say goodbye to Amelia, then left. Nick dug the truck keys out of Greg's pocket for him. Greg bundled Amelia up a little tighter in the warm blanket to protect her from the cold and they stepped outside. Nick unlocked the truck and hurried to open the back door. Greg handed Amelia to Nick and he buckled her in the carseat. She yawned widely, green eyes drooping. He kissed her forehead then slid out of the backseat.
"I'll sit back here with her if you'll drive?" Greg proposed. Nick nodded in response. Before getting in the driver's seat, though, he grabbed Greg and kissed him, short and sweet. Greg swayed a little, a smile on his face as he climbed into the back seat. Nick got in too and started up the car, heat blasting through the vents. He turned it down some, backing out of the parking spot at the same time and leaving the hospital.
Greg draped an arm across Amelia's car seat, watching her every move. Her eyes were closed, but she was still waving her tiny arms around, cooing and making other baby noises. He tickled her chin and she hiccuped. With a laugh, he patted her chest softly, easing away the hiccups. He could feel Nick's eyes on him every couple of minutes. He finally looked up and locked eyes through the rearview mirror. They shared a bright smile right before Nick pulled into the motel parking lot. He got out and went inside, leaving Greg with Amelia.
"Hey there, Amelia. I'm your new daddy. Well one of them at least." he chuckled. She stared at him with bright, sleepy eyes. A tiny fist swung at his face and he laughed. He tickled her tummy and she squealed. "You're gonna be okay, baby girl. You're gonna be okay." He kissed the tiny fist, jumping when he felt a much larger hand on his shoulder. "Jesus! Don't scare me like that!" he laughed.
"Ready to go inside?" Nick asked, knowing the answer already. Greg nodded as he started to unbuckled Amelia. He grabbed the diaper bag and handed it to Nick, then easily picked Amelia up, cradling her in his arms. She squirmed in the blanket all the way to the room. Greg was smiling at how cute she was and Nick was watching in amusement.
Greg laid her in the center of the bed while Nick pulled out a clean diaper and a bottle and some formula. While Greg changed her diaper, Nick got some milk ready and warm for her. Greg tossed the diaper into the trash can by the bed then sat on the edge to wait for Nick. He watched Amelia look around until he felt teh bed sink next to him. He watched Nick crawl to the other side of her and pick her up, showing the bottle to her and he chuckled when she reached for it.
After a few minutes and a couple of burps later, the three of them were laying on the bed. Amelia lay between Nick and Greg, sound asleep already. Even though it was still early, not even eleven, the two men were growing sleepy; they had a long drive back home tomorrow. "I'm so glad we did this, Nicky." Greg muttered, eyes drooping closed and voice laced with roughness.
"Me too, Greg. Me too." Nick replied and reached for Greg's hand. Greg was soon asleep, one hand in Nick's, the other splayed across Amelia's stomach. Nick closed his eyes, ready for sleep also. They had a whole new life to start when they got home. And they might as well be well rested.
