It was three AM when you woke me up
And we jumped in the car and drove as far as we could go
Just to get away
We talked about our lives
Until the sun came up
And now I'm thinking about
How I wish I could go back
Just for one more day
One more day with you

"Greg, wake up." Nick whispered, placing a soft kiss to the corner of his lover's eye. Greg groaned and cracked an eye open.

"Nick, it's," he glanced over at the blaring red numbers of the clock, "three a.m. What're you doing up?"

Nick rubbed at his sleepy eyes, but chose to ignore the scratchy feel. "I don't know. Let's go for a drive." he suggested and bounced off the bed. Greg groaned and reluctantly sat up, throwing his feet over the side of the bed. He swayed a little, but regained his balance in a second and began pulling on some clothes. Nick was already dressed and waiting by the door with the car keys in hand. Greg slipped some shoes on and sleepily followed Nick out the door.

Nick started up his car, the loud engine breaking through the night silence. Greg leaned his head against the window, letting the cool glass wake him up some. His slow breaths fogged up the glass as the trees and road signs and buildings passed by in a blur.

"Nicky, where are we going?"

Nick paused for a second, thinking about where the hell they might be going. After a moment he just shrugged and glanced over at Greg. Greg's brow wrinkled in thought and confusion. Nick had never acted like this before. So, he took Nick's hand and absentmindedly rubbed the pad of his thumb across the top of the strong hand. Nick relished in the warmth flowing from Greg and it calmed him.

Nick had no idea where he was going, but he didn't really care. Just as long as Greg was with him he would be fine.

The bed creaked underneath Nick's weight. The emtpy beer bottle in his hand clattered to the floor. It was 3 AM and he couldn't sleep. The only thing on his mind was how long it had been. How it long had been since Greg had left Las Vegas and went back home.

He left you Nick. Stop thinking about it.  Warrick had told him. Nick just couldn't get that out of his mind. Greg had left him. Had fucking left him for a better life than the one at the crime lab where all you saw every day was death and pain and agony. Nick still remembered that day a year ago when Greg and Grissom had a major blowout about Greg fucking up a case and so Greg just packed up and left. Nick had just stood there and watched, doing absolutely nothing to stop his lover from walking out of his life.

Now here Nick sat, drunk off his ass and tears building in his eyes. He felt like he had no control over his life anymore. He hadn't heard from Greg; zip, zilch, nada. Hell he hadn't even bothered himself to call Greg. Greg was out of his life; gone.

Everytime I see your face
Everytime you look my way
It's like it all falls into place
And everything feels right
Ever since you walked away
You left my life in disarray
All I want is one more day
All I need is one more day with you

When the car broke down
We just kept walkin along
Til we hit this town
There was nothing there at all
But that was all okay
We spent all our money on stupid things
But if I looked back now, I'd probably give it all away
Just for one more day
One more day with you

The Denali was running on empty when the two of them pulled into a small, quiet town 200 miles out of Vegas. "Nick, what's the deal?" Greg asked. It was now almost 5 in the morning and they sun hadn't come up yet. The Denali stalled before letting out a puff of smoke and stopping. Nick manuevered onto the side of the road just in time. He got out and motioned for Greg to follow him. Greg got out and watched as Nick hauled himself on the hood of the car. Greg followed suit and slid in close to his lover.

Nick leaned back on his hands and let his legs hang off the front of the car. "So, Greg. What's been going on in that pretty little head of yours?" Nick asked, starting off a conversation.

Oh how Greg wanted to tell him. I got a better job back home in Cali. I'm leaving in two days. Yeah, so what's going on with you? Greg rolled his eyes and just shook his head. "Nick, what's going on with you? You wake me up at 3 am and tell me we're going for a drive."

Nick stared out at the dusky morning sky and let out a deep breath. He hesitated before looking over at Greg. "It's nothing really. I just...it feels like we're losing connection with each other. I can tell something's bothering you, Greggo. Talk to me."

Greg sighed and closed his eyes. The sun was just beginning to rise, turning the sky a pinkish color. The clouds refelected the first rays of the sun peeking over the horizon. Greg opened his eyes and gazed at the sight in awe. But he couldn't stare off into space forever. He had to tell Nick sometime. He couldn't just pack up and leave in two days without an explanation and anybody knowing what the hell he was doing.

"It's nothing."

"Dammit, Greg!" Nick sat up, sliding off the car and hitting the ground with a soft thud. "Don't lie to me." he said quietly, moving in between Greg's knees and laying his hands on each knee. Greg looked away when Nick started gently squeezing his thighs. Nick stared at Greg and suddenly he looked so young. He didn't look like his 26 year old best friend-turned-lover anymore.

"I can't tell you right now." Greg whispered, tears building in his eyes. "Don't worry about it right now."

Nick momentarily closed his eyes and breathed in deep. The cool, damp air calmed him down enough to nod and let it go...for now. He turned around, keeping his hands on Greg's thighs, and watched the sun completely rise. It was beautiful. And being with Greg made it perfect. Greg sat up and loosely hung his arms arounds Nick' shoulders.

"Let's go look around." Nick suggested after the sun had come up. The car was out of gas....there was nothing better to do. Nick pushed away from the car and Greg slid off the hood. Greg smiled and they started walking towards the many small buildings in town. The first shop in sight was a candle shop.

XXXXXLaterXXXXX

"Nicky, how are we going to get back home?" Greg asked late in the afternoon as they walked back to the car. Nick paused for a second before looking over Greg and shrugging. Greg shook his head, but he couldn't help the smile that stretched across his face.

Everytime I see your face
Everytime you look my way
It's like it all falls into place
Everything feels right
Ever since you walked away
My life's been in disarray
All I need is one more day with you

Nick bit his lip as he stared out at the setting sun. They had been in that town all day. They spent most of their money and had a blast. But something was still bothering Greg that he wouldn't tell Nick. Nick was beginning to wonder. "Greg, please tell me what's going on." he said quietly, glancing over at Greg and then back at the horizon.

Greg knew this was coming. He was going to have to tell him sometime. He couldn't let it go, especially when it was going to happen in two days. "Nick, you'll hate me. I can't tell you. But I need to. I don't want to hurt you or the rest of the tema, but you of all people, have the right to know what's going on."

Nick straightened up at this, his curiosity and a slight twinge of fear surfacing. "I'm all ears, G."

Greg took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He didn't know how to tell Nick. He couldn't just blurt it out and expect Nick to understand and they could just get on with their lives. No. It didn't happen that way. Not in their lives. "I'm leaving day after tomorrow."

Nick froze. He thought his heart would beat out of his chest with anxiety and panic. "W...what?"

"You know that total blowout Grissom and I had?" Nick nodded. "I leave day after tomorrow. I'm going back home to Cali and getting a better job there. I hate that it has to be this way."

Nick lost all hearing after the word "leave". His mind reeled and all he could think about was Greg leaving. Greg is leaving. "You're leaving me?" he croaked out and looked over at Greg.

"Nick, don't be that way."

"Don't be what way, Greg? You're leaving and you choose to tell me NOW?!" Nick's temper flared and his voice rose a notch. Greg flinched at the volume. "You know what. Nevermind. I'm not even going to argue. Let's just...find a way home."

"Nicky-"

"Just stop, Greg. You're leaving. I get it." If looks could kill then Greg would be dead right now. Nick let out a frustrated sigh and kicked the tire of the Denali.

"No, Nick! We're going to talk about this." Greg said calmly. Nick rolled his eyes and began walking off in the direction they came that morning. "Do you think I want to leave after everything that's happened between us?"

That stopped Nick midstep. His shoulders slumped slightly and he turned around. Greg walked over to him and stood directly in front of him. "What?"

"After everything that's happened, I don't want to leave. But Nick, I want a chance at a normal life away from all the things we see and deal with every damn day. I'm so frustrated with it all that I can't take it anymore." Greg tried explaining but it went straight over Nick's head.

"Greg, why? Whats better in California?! What can be better than what you and I have?" Nick asked and Greg felt so bad at the hurt lacing Nick's every word that he wanted to cry.

Nick thought he caught a glimpse of hurt in Greg's eyes before he turned away; he couldn't be sure. Greg huffed and fell in step behind Nick as they started walking.

Now I'm sittin here, like we used to do
I think about my life and how now there's nothing I won't do
Just for one more day
One more day with you

The coolness of the Denali felt good against Nick's bare back as he lay on the hood. The sun was beginning to rise, turning the sky an orangish purple color. It was a cool morning and the fresh air felt good. That night two years ago played in his mind like a movie. It was one year today that Greg announced he was leaving. And Nick still hadn't gotten over it. There was still a hole in his heart and an ache in his chest and Greg was the only one that could fill it. But he didn't think he'd ever see Greg again.

Sometimes he wondered how Greg was doing at his new job. Everyday he called only to hang up as soon as Greg answered. He tried sending letters only to go to the mailbox before the mailman came to take the mail away. Now, he held his cell phone in one hand while the other was behind his head. He held the phone up and punched in Greg's cell number in hopes that this time he would be able to say something.

The phone rang and nick was beginning to get nervous. It rang once, twice, three times and someone picked up. "Hello?"

Nick froze and his throat closed up. "Hello?" Greg's voice rang through the phone and Nick felt tears spring to his eyes. "Hello?!"

"Greg."

Everytime I see your face
Everytime you look my way
It's like it all falls into place
Everything feels right (Everything feels right)
Everytime I hear your name
Everytime I feel the same
It's like it all falls into place
Everything feels right

Greg sent one last longing look towards the crime lab before stomping off to his car. Nick followed in silence. The door opened and Greg halted. Greg threw his duffel bag full of things from his locker into the back seat. Nick watched in silence.

Nick hesitantly stepped over, placing a hand on the small of Greg's back. Greg spun around and the look of longing and regret in his eyes faded.

"Don't leave." Nick pleaded quietly and Greg silenced him with a kiss. He pulled away and slid into the driver's seat.

Once Greg was buckled in he slammed the door closed and sent one last look to Nick. Nick watched Greg speed out of the parking lot with a sadness that was already settling deep into his chest.

One more day
Just one more day

"Nicky? Is that you?"

Nick choked. He didn't know what to say. All the days he planned on what he was going to say and now he couldn't even speak. Instead of speaking, he hung up. He slid off the hood of the car and ran back inside. He felt sick. Just hearing Greg's voice made him want to cry. He missed Greg. Too much for words.

His cell rang outside. Nick stopped at the door and looked over his shoulder. He stared at the ringing phone for the longest time. It stopped after a couple of minutes. He went back out to get it and after he picked it up, he looked at the screen. "1 missed call" flashed across the screen. He flipped open the phone and clicked "view" to see who the call was from. GREG showed up and he snapped the phone shut. A tear slipped down his cheek and he angrily wiped it away.

There was only one way he could get over this. He had to see Greg. He just had to.

It's all I need, just one more day with you
