Fall, so named for the season, was apropos.  The brisk chill in the air from the drop in temperature carried with it melancholy and nostalgia.  One year marks were meant for celebrations, like birthdays or proof of an enduring relationship despite skepticism.  But Greg was reminded instead: it’s been a year, a year since there was no time for second thoughts and a kid died on impact against asphalt.

“Here.”

He felt the nudge against his shoulder just as he looked up and he smiled at the mug Nick held out toward him, a quizzical look on his face.

“Thanks,” Greg said, then breathed in the rich scent of hot chocolate spiced with cinnamon before taking a cautious sip.  He didn’t say so aloud, but he was grateful for the distraction from his somber thoughts.  Nick sat next to him on the couch and reached for the throw resting on one arm.

“Here,” Nick said again and Greg found both of his hands momentarily occupied with mugs of hot chocolate.  He laughed a little as Nick made a dramatic gesture of shaking the throw open and it cascaded in waves before it settled over both of their laps.  Nick tucked them both in, snug against the couch, blanket chest high over each before he took back his mug from Greg.

“Still cold,” Greg said, shivering even as he took another sip.

“Yeah,” Nick agreed, sighing.  “The plumber’s gonna be here first thing in the morning to fix the pipes.  Until then, you’ll have to settle for good ol’-fashioned body heat to keep you warm.”  Nick leaned back and pulled Greg against him, his free arm circling over Greg’s slender shoulders.

“Not complaining,” Greg murmured, relaxing against Nick’s solid warmth as he felt fingers wander through his hair.

“Some things aren’t worth reminding yourself of,” Nick said quietly.

“I know,” Greg replied with a sigh.  “But . . . it’s hard no to think, you know . . . if only . . .”

“Hey.”

Greg felt a tap on his head and he angled his face up just as Nick lowered his and a soft kiss landed on his lips.

“Hey yourself,” Greg said, smiling as they broke from the brief exchange.  Nick’s hand slid down to cover his cheek, thumb caressing just beneath his eye.

“You’re here,” Nick said, now tracing Greg’s lips with his fingertips.  “And that’s it, okay?  That’s all that matters.”

“Okay,” Greg replied.  “All right.”  He reached up, tugged at Nick’s hand until it lay over his chest and he covered it with his; they finished their hot chocolate in comfortable silence.

Ahhh, no wonder I liked this so much! Ruminations on Broken Glass and Bare Feet is one of my favourite fics ;).

Does this mean you have a new journal that I have to lurk as well? :P
