It was another quite night in Vegas, which unfortunately didn’t happen very often. The night was mostly spent with Nick doing paperwork he had ignored for quite a while and now needed to be done.
“Hey Nicky? Have you seen Warrick anywhere?” Catherine asked as she stepped into the evidence room.
“Yeah, he was with Jacqui trying to work something out with an old case of his, why?”
“Nothing in particular. Have you seen the new lab tech yet?”
“I thought he wouldn’t be starting before the end of next week?”
“Yeah. But Grissom asked if he could come sooner because of the flu going around here. Several of the techs are already affected.”
“Oh, okay. Then that makes sense. You welcomed him already?” Nick asked ginning.
“Yeah, and he is a pretty nice guy. Although his style is… young, to say the least.”
Nick laughed about that.
“What that’s supposed to mean?”
“Nothing, just stating the obvious. But I have heard back in San Francisco, where he is from, he did a pretty awesome job as tech.”
“I am pretty sure there will be plenty of occasions when you will be witness to whether or not those rumors are true.”
Nick kept on writing his reports, looking up every now and then.
“Oh you bet…” Catherine said before being interrupted by someone appearing next to her.
Nick couldn’t really see who it was but assumed it was the new guy.
Focusing back on the paperwork in front of him which had to be done by the end of the night, he heard Catherine keep on talking.
“Nick, meet our new lab tech...” she started.
“Hey, I’m Greg Sanders…” he heard and that made him look up within seconds.
No, that couldn’t be, could it? Nick wondered. When he looked up, into that friendly face he knew it could be. In front of him stood Greg Sanders, from Chicago. The guy he had spent so much time looking for, only to give up.
“Oh my god, Greg? I … Oh my god…” was all he could say. The surprise on Greg’s face told Nick that Greg hadn’t known whom he would meet here either.
“Nick? I don’t believe this,” he could see him smiling.
“You two know each other?” Catherine asked.
“Um. Yeah. We met about a year ago at a convention. Back then I was still with the PD in Dallas and Greg was working for the lab in…” and then he remembered that he never found out where Greg was from.
“San Francisco,” Greg completed the sentence.
“Wow, what a coincidence that you two meet again in Vegas. Small world.”
“Yeah” Nick and Greg both answered at the same time.
“I guess you two have some catching up to do. How about you meet me in ten minutes in the break room, Greg?” Catherine asked. She headed out of the room.
“Sounds good.” Greg replied and Catherine left.
Nick grinned at Greg like it was Christmas and he was the present.
“I … god. I can’t even tell you how often I thought bout you, tried to find you. But nothing. There was no way…”
“Well, I guess you didn’t get the bill then, did you?” Greg asked with a grin.
“I wish I would have, seriously. But no, I didn’t. So what does that tell you? It wasn’t destiny after all?”
“Well, we met now, by another coincidence. I think that proves it is destiny,” Greg said, smiling.
“Before you leave this room again, you write your number on a sheet of paper, and your address. Just so you won’t vanish again. I am not going to risk that,” Nick said, handing Greg a pen and some paper.
Greg took it and wrote his number and address on it, before handing it back to Nick.
They stood in front of each other with goofy smiles on their faces. They didn’t care who saw them right now, because this moment was something both had spent a year hoping for.
Before getting back to their jobs, Nick made arrangements to meet Greg after shift. He’d take him to breakfast and catch up on the past year.
From the moment Nick had seen Greg again time had practically stopped. Minutes seemed to take forever to go by and an hour before end of shift Nick felt like it hadn’t been three hours, but three days. But finally he was done. Thank god. Now he would meet Greg, they would have breakfast and then he would never again let younger man go.
They went to a diner that Nick occasionally ate at. They served a good breakfast and it was near his place.
“So how have you been?” Nick asked.
“Pretty good actually. I didn’t become a CSI, although I had thought about it once or twice,” Greg smiled and Nick remembered they conversation about that about a year ago.
“And what made you move to Vegas?”
Greg first had to laugh, before answering.
“Don’t know. I wanted a change. Wanted to go somewhere else, break free, see something else. And it is Vegas. Why are you in Vegas?”
“I guess for the same reason. I just had the feeling to do something different.”
“So how long have you been in Vegas?” Greg asked, taking a sip of his coffee. He started tearing his toast apart, eating a bite.
“Not that long, just a few months. But I like it here. The team is cool, you’ll see. Okay Grissom is a bit…special, but he is okay. Catherine you’ve met and I assume you also met Warrick, right?”
“Yeah he was great, although I got the feeling he felt like he had to mark his territory. You know. All big guy,” Greg smiled.
“Yeah, that sounds like Warrick. Once you get to know him, you realize he is really nice and all that. Just in the beginning? He did that with me, too. “
Greg looked at Nick for a while, and Nick could see the question written all over Greg’s face. He was about to ask what was on the other man’s mind when Greg started talking.
“Was there... um… someone in the past year?” Greg asked in a quiet voice.
“I… If I had someone in the last year? You mean a relationship? Um... no… there was no one. I was actually busier trying to find a particular bill with a number on it that would bring me closer to you again. But well… I failed.” Nick smiled weakly at Greg who felt suddenly very guilty.
“You know I have thought about that often. About what would have happened if I had just given you my number without that little game. I guess I just wanted to see what would happen. And I really believed you would get it somehow. Guess it didn’t work out the way I had wanted it, or we had wanted it, huh?” Greg asked, looking at Nick with a smile.
“Well, now you are here and I am here. So I guess it doesn’t matter whether or not it was a great idea.”
“Wouldn’t it have been totally cool if it had worked out?”
Nick just smiled, nodding and grabbing his wallet. Since he didn’t have enough small change to pay for breakfast, he had to wait for the waitress to come. He could pay here and would get the change back.
“You know some things never work out. After all we were in Chicago, at a diner, where probably millions of tourists come each year. That bill could have gone to New York the same day,” Greg went on babbling, looking out of the window and watching a few people pass.
Then he looked at Nick, who looked surprised.
“What? Did I say something wrong?”
Nick just looked at Greg.
“Um. Your number in San Francisco didn’t happen to be 415-974-6900, did it?” Nick asked.
“Yeah. But how…?” a surprised Greg asked.
And in that moment Nick held up a five-dollar bill. One with a number written on it. Greg’s number. The number Nick had spent a year looking for but never found. And now that he had found Greg again, or Greg had found him or neither of it… he got the number as well. Sometimes life could be really strange.
