Summary: The last day of Nick and Greg in Chicago

Around seven the next morning Nick’s alarm clock woke him. It seemed that Greg didn’t even hear it; he didn’t move in the slightest. He was still exactly the way he had been laying when they feel asleep, sprawled over Nick, his head on Nick’s chest.

“Greg?” he whispered. “Are you awake?”

No answer, no reaction that would indicate he was.

“Greg?” he asked again, still barely above a whisper, and nudged Greg softly.

Greg moved slowly, making some strange but very adorable noises. Nick could see that Greg had turned his head to look at him, but so far he hadn’t opened his eyes. But slowly they opened and Nick found himself looking in dark brown eyes.

“Good morning sunshine,” Nick smiled, seeing Greg snuggling his face into his chest.

“How late is it?” Greg groaned.

“About 7am”

“God, wake me in 30? Okay? Cause there is no way I can get up now…”

“You sure? Nothing that would maybe cause you to change your mind?”

“Well… maybe. A shared shower might possibly be able to change my mind.”

“A shared shower?” Nick laughed and saw Greg smiling at him.

“Somehow I have the feeling that a shared shower would cause us to even longer to get ready.”

“Well… that might happen,” Greg smiled as Nick pushed him slightly off and left the bed.

An hour, a shared shower, and breakfast later Nick and Greg were on their way to the conference.

“There are so many things I need to see today, like 4 presentations before lunch and another 4 after…”

“Well, I will only be going to two or three of the presentations myself,” Nick replied to a surprised looking Greg.

“Two or three? What will you do the rest of the time?”

“Don’t know… go and see Chicago … it isn’t like you have to see everything or you have to attend every single presentation. This isn’t school, Greg. No one will require that you sign in to prove you attended. If you skip a few it won’t be a bad thing. I mean some of them are on topics I don’t need to know about. it depends on what you specialize in yourself. That does not mean it is bad that you want to go and see all of them. It is great. It’s good to be so motivated.”

“So if I want to see all of them, it’ll be okay with you?]?”

“Sure, why shouldn’t it be okay? Listen Greg, just because I don’t choose to go see all of these doesn’t mean you can’t. What do you want to see by the way?”

“Well, there are a few about the processing of a crime scene and all that stuff that might be interesting.”

“So you still think about becoming a CSI?” Nick smiled.

“Of course, any of these could cause me to rethink that decision, but until that happens, I want to. But until the… I want to.”

“Great, sounds good to me,” Nick beamed at Greg.

“I guess I won’t see much of you today then?” Greg asked and Nick thought about it for a moment.

“Well, not really I guess. I am going to just two presentations and those aren’t on your list that you want to see.” He shook his head. “But we could have lunch together later today if you want…” he suggested and saw Greg’s eyes light up suddenly.

“That would be awesome,” Greg replied and took a look at his watch.

“Guess I should get going, ‘cause otherwise I might be late. I’ll see you later today? Like noon? Here?”

“Yeah, sounds good to me, I’ll be here waiting for you,” Nick said as he started walking away the opposite direction from Greg.

Later, as Greg left the conference room, he found himself debating whether he should follow Nick’s example and skip some of the presentations himself. He hadn’t actually fallen asleep yet, but he had come close.

And after all, spending more time with Nick didn’t sound too bad. Maybe he should consider it.

“Nick!” Greg suddenly thought. Weren’t the two of them supposed o have lunch together? Right.

Greg looked up and searched the room for the familiar face of the tall Texan, but didn’t see him anywhere. Someone tapped his shoulder from behind. Turning around Greg saw it was Nick.

“Hey! You just walked past me, totally lost in thought. You didn’t even hear me calling your name. Bad day? Or just boring?”

“Well, boring, really boring. I find myself wondering whether or not I should skip my afternoon lectures and just go with you,” he grinned at Nick, who grinned back.

“Up to you, but I can guarantee with me it won’t be boring at all.”

“I have no doubt about that…” he started as he walked towards the exit.

“So. Where do we go for lunch?”

“I found that nice little diner, about ten minutes away from here by cab. It looked nice and comfortable, with a good variety of foods. How does that sound?”

“Like a perfect place to have lunch.”

Nick laughed wholeheartedly at Greg and opened the door for him.

After lunch Greg decided on skipping his afternoon presentations and went with Nick to see some of Chicago. They had so much fun together that time seemed to literally fly by. By night fall they were still together; lying in each others arms, close to falling asleep.

Greg had been lying there for quite some time, trying to sleep but too many thoughts kept his busy brain active and made it impossible for him to drift off.

Nick eventually noticed Greg’s state of insomnia.

“Can’t sleep?” he asked and heard a soft ‘hm...’

“I take that as a no. What is it that keeping you awake?”

“Just thinking.” Greg answered, drawing circles on Nick’s chest with his index finger.

“What about?”

“Just stuff”

“Stuff? Must be important stuff when it keeps you awake at … 1am,” Nick noted, wondering if everything was okay with Greg.

“I’m just…. Have you noticed that tomorrow is the last day of the conference? Then we will get back to our regular lives in our own cities?”

“Yeah…”

“And have you thought about what might happen then?”

“You trying to tell me something?” Nick smiled and kissed Greg’s hair.

“Just wondering about it…”

“Wondering about what?”

“Us…”

“Is there an us?”

“Well, yeah. I thought so. Not that this means anything like… expectations, just…”

“Wondering. Yeah I got that. Where do you want this to go?” Nick asked.

“Not really anywhere…it is just... the last two days were so great and I was just wondering when I’d had so much fun before.”

“So what are you wondering about?”

“Okay, don’t freak out, yeah? Just… have you ever thought of moving? Like to another place?”

“What? Leaving Dallas?” Nick asked, wondering what Greg was actually trying to get at.

“Yeah, somewhere else. You know… away from Dallas… to the coast maybe…”

“That wouldn’t be maybe right next to you, would it?” Nick teased.

“No… I’m just… Have you ever felt like you are maybe missing out on something?”

“What would I be missing out on?”

“Life?”

“And that would be solved by moving to the coast? Don’t get me wrong, Greg, but it sounds ridiculous.”

“I didn’t mean it like that. Just… Have you ever thought about leaving all of your life behind, going to a place where no one knows you, where you could start all over again?”

“I think everyone has thought about this at some point in their life, Greg.”

“Where would you go?”

“Greg, what are you trying to achieve with this? Is there a reason for this?”

“I was just wondering about it, I’m not trying to achieve anything.”

“So where would you go?”

“Europe. Or Australia.” Greg answered.

“Whoa, that really is far away. I am pretty sure no one would know you there,” Nick commented and could feel Greg laughing against his skin.

“Why there? Any reason?”

“No, just… I don’t know. Just sounds exciting. And there is something else.”

“Canada has something else as well, but closer.” Nick explained and saw Greg smiling.

“And where would the adventure be?” Greg grinned.

“You want adventure? Move to Greenland.”

“Greenland actually belongs to Denmark and therefore is theoretically Europe. What would I do in Europe with a degree in chemistry?” Greg asked.

“I have no idea, but it is an adventure, and you are the one that started this conversation.” Nick replied with a sheepish grin.

“Maybe we should drop this whole conversation. ” Greg laughed before he pressed a kiss against Nick’s chest. Eventually they both fell asleep.

The next morning Greg woke up all alone in the bed. The sheets next to him were cold, indicating Nick would have been up for a while.

Greg looked around the room, but there was no Nick to be seen. Noises coming from the bathroom meant he wasn’t there, either. So where was he?

Nick’s suitcase was still there, so he hadn’t left permanently. Greg felt himself relax a little. He laughed at himself, wondering what he’d been thinking. After all Nick didn’t seem like the kind of guy who would just leave in the middle of the night.

Greg was about to search the bathroom anyway when the door opened and Nick stepped inside.

“I see you are up. Great.” He smiled and Greg found himself wondering how someone could be so happy at such an early hour.

“Yeah, I am up, but why are you? And even more important where would you go at such an early hour?”

“I just needed to get outside for awhile. I went running,” Nick explained. It was then that Greg realized Nick was wearing workout clothes.

“Since this is our last morning together I thought we should treat ourselves to breakfast in bed. How does that sound?” Nick asked smiling and Greg grinned back. That sounded like heaven.

About 20 minutes later their breakfast arrived and Nick pushed the tray in the room, placing it in front of the bed.

The next hour was spent enjoying each others company for what could be the last time in such a free, uninhibited way. They feed each other bits of toast and fruit, trading sloppy kisses in between.

They had planned to take all their things with them so they wouldn’t have to return to the hotel after the close of the convention. This was especially important since Nick’s flight back to Dallas left just three hours after the convention ended.

When checking out, Greg was informed that his key had been found. It had been turned in two days ago.

“Why wasn’t I informed?” Greg asked. Not that he had minded, ‘cause he would probably have spent the night with Nick anyway.

“ I assumed they tried to contact you but couldn’t get a hold of you. That is the only explanation I have.” the receptionist tried.

Greg knew it was a weak one, and probably not 100% true, but he didn’t really care.

They paid for their rooms, Greg receiving a discount for the inconvenience caused by the lost key. They left the hotel together.

It was not really a long day, and Greg had gotten enough sleep, but he still couldn’t concentrate on anything the speaker said. His mind was million miles away, thinking about the last few days, wondering about the future, Nick in particular. And it appeared he wasn’t the only one suffering from a lack of attention.

Nick was forced to think about the last few days as well, about how he and Greg had spent them. The truth was he had never felt as great as he had the last few days spent with Greg. He was wondering how he could leave it all so easily. In the end, he had to, but he knew he would miss Greg. Maybe he should ask for his number? Would that be okay? After all Greg might have just seen this as a little fling, nothing serious and would forget about it as soon as he boarded his plane back home.

Ich glaube, dass Kapitel mag ich bisher am liebsten.
nur den einen satz, wozu greg in europa sein chemistry degree (mir fällt grad keine übersetzung ein *g*) brauchen würde, finde ich seltsam.

Ja, Great chapter! Die morgenliche Bettszene war wirklich toll. Aber wie kann Nick nur denken das Greg ihn nur für eine kurze Affäre hällt. Er sollte mehr auf den Subtext achten.
