neviditelny was kind enough to point out to me that Karma is a pre-exisisting X-Men character... Mine's an OC. :)
Chapters One through Twelve
(Thirteen - Karma Confined)
When they entered Karma’s room, both were shocked by her condition. Her arms were tightly restrained to the rails of the hospital bed, her lips were dry and cracked, and her black hair lay in oily clumps on the pillow. What worried Nick the most was that her knuckles were caked with dried blood. He pulled one of the hideously uncomfortable hospital chairs over to her bed.
“I’m so sorry it took us so long to get here, ma’am,” he started. Karma opened her eyes and looked at him blearily. Greg hung back, hovering close to the door. Dealing with people in difficult situations was Nick’s forté. In a few simple words, a touch, a smile, people were soothed by his presence.
“I’m glad to see you, Mr. Stokes,” she slurred. “That bald man that works with you… I don’t like him. He beats his wife. He touched me, he let them take me. His daughter is a mutant, too. That’s why he hates us so much. May I have a drink? My hands…” She twisted her wrists against their restraints and revealed raw pink burns. Nick gestured to Greg to bring his kit over. “Logan is here, too… I hear him yelling, then he comes into the room… and Logan is quiet. He puts drops on my hands.” Her eyes rolled up to look at Greg. “I dreamed of you. I don’t feel well. Who named you Hojem?” Her eyes drooped closed again.
“Olivia, I’m going to take a sample your hands to see if we can find out what caused the burns. Do you remember how you got blood on your knuckles?” She stirred and opened her eyes again, with difficulty.
“It’s mine. They’ve stopped bleeding, then.” Nick nodded. Greg handed Nick two swabs and he gently stroked them across her burns.
“Olivia, who is he? Is it Ecklie, the bald man?” Her face turned toward Greg’s voice. Her eyes were dark, drugged.
“Nnn…” Head slowly turning side to side. “Beard and glasses. Military. He was in charge of the surgery.”
Nick and Greg exchanged a look. William Stryker? Nick made a mental note to get some background information on him from Brass. In the meantime, he decided to go back to the school and go over the scene with fresh eyes to try and tie Stryker to the kidnapping.
“Olivia, we have to go now. Greg and I are going to see what we can do about getting you and Logan released from here, too. There’s no reason for you to be treated like this.” He put his hand on her arm and a shudder rippled through her. Then she smiled.
“Mr. Stokes, how long have you known?” Nick’s brow furrowed.
“Known what?”
“That you’re one of us.”

Date: 2005-03-07 10:55 pm (UTC)If I'm correct, you mentioned that your Karma was an OC. I'm not sure if anyone else has told you this, but there is an X-Man named Karma as well. I'm not sure if you knew this or not, but it makes it a little cofusing to be reading and going, "WTF? Karma doesn't have those powers!" Not trying to be mean, but it is confusing.
If you're not all too familiar with the Marvel Universes, and the X-Men, then I suggest www.uncannyxmen.net for character profiles of existing X-Men or those affiliated with them. Character Bios can be found under Cerebro Files on one of the side menu bars.
And please, continue writing this!

Date: 2005-03-09 04:39 am (UTC)I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but I really liked the fact that you made Nick a mutant. I know alot of people think that Greg's the obvious choice, but I really do like that you chose Nick instead. Personally, I think Warrick would be another interesting choice, but that's just me.
Keep writing!

Date: 2005-03-08 12:14 am (UTC)I'm ok at playing fanfic out in my head (overactive imagination coming in very handy) but the stuff that I write is just abstract ideas which happen to be wandering around my head.
And there are more than enough wonderful fic writers out there to keep me occupied ;)
