“We come to support our friends during the birth of their children…and we get stuck watching the children they already have?” Greg heard Sara ask from around the corner before he rounded it into the waiting room.
In the small room was Nick, Warrick, Catherine and Sara along with Aidan, Charlie and Angelica; the latter two fast asleep on the plush chairs in the corner.
“We appreciate the sentiment Sara.” Greg said softly with a chuckle, announcing his presence.
The four adults turned at the voice and smiled when they saw whom it was. Greg was pulled into three different hugs and then Nick reached for his hand and pulled him beside him, “How’s Leighanne?” Nick asked and while it seemed like an innocent enough question, Greg knew better. Nick was trying to determine if Greg had chickened out and left the room after Nick had gone.
Greg smirked, “She’s doing really well. Epidural is in and when I left, she and Nate were discussing Brad Pitt…or was it Leonardo Dicaprio?” Greg asked himself thoughtfully as Nick laughed, “I didn’t know Nate was gay.”
“He’s not.” Nick answered, “But he grew up with 4 sisters, no brothers and their father was always at work. He learned to gush over guys and how to apply makeup to survive.” He explained and Greg whooped with laughter.
“So how long do we think until they’re here?” Catherine asked.
“Dr. Paul said it wouldn’t be long. She’s only got two more centimeters to go.” Greg reported with a smile.
“I’m going to go in and say hi to Nate.” Nick announced and walked from the room.
“So where’s Grissom?” Greg asked sitting heavily next to Aidan who smiled and leaned his head on Greg’s shoulder.
“Just finishing up some paperwork. He said he’d stop by after.” Sara said as she took a seat with Warrick and Catherine.
“And Bobby said he and Craig would be by once they find a sitter for Abigail.” Catherine mentioned and Greg nodded rubbing his eyes with a yawn.
“You should take a nap man. You’re going to need all the rest you can get.” Warrick commented.
Greg shook his head, “I’ve got to get used to it anyway. When we get the twin’s home I’m going to be pulling more hours without sleep then 24.”
Contrary to the words coming out of his mouth though Greg laid his head against the wall and closed his eyes, “Greg?” Sara asked with a smirk; Greg didn’t budge.
“It’ll take a bomb going off to get him to wake up now.” Aidan commented making the room laugh.

“We’re making record time this time aren’t we? What are we at? Close to 6 hours?” Dr. Paul asked.
Nick checked his watch and nodded, “Just about. It’s gone quickly.”
“Maybe for you.” Leighanne said softly, “It’s felt like a year and a half for me.” Nick smiled and rubbed her shoulder comfortingly.
“Where’s Greg?” Dr. Paul asked as he once again settled between Leighanne’s legs.
Nick shrugged, “I think he’s entertaining in the waiting room.”
“Well you might want to go get him.” Dr. Paul said with a nod, “Because we’re ready to rock and roll.”
“Really?” Nick asked surprised.
“10 centimeters and 100 percent effaced. We’re ready to have some babies.”
“Oh thank god.” Leighanne sighed relieved.
“I’ll be right back. Keep them in there until I get back.” Nick said jokingly as he jogged from the room and down the hall to the waiting room.
As he entered the room he found Sara sitting in a chair reading a magazine in one corner, Greg sound asleep in the another and Charlie, Aidan and Angelica intently watching the TV against the wall as it played Jerry Springer, “This is your version of child care?” He asked softly and Sara looked up startled. Nick pointed at the TV and the three small children watching it like it was the most interesting object in the universe.
“They’re alive aren’t they?” She asked incredulously and Nick rolled his eyes with a chuckle, walking over to the TV and turning it off much to the protest of Aidan and Charlie.
“And that’s the last time you’ll see that show until you’re 18.” Nick chuckled, “Where are the others?” He asked.
“Cafeteria for coffee.” Sara answered and Nick nodded before walking over to Greg.
He smiled to himself and regretted having to wake his husband because he looked so cute curled up on the chair but the fact that their fourth and fifth child were about to come into the world pushed him forward, “Hey baby?” He said softly shaking the sleeping man slightly. Greg didn’t budge, “Greg?” Nothing, “Greg wake up.” He said a little louder; still nothing, “Greg!” He yelled, probably a little to loud but it got the desired effect. Greg awoke with a start.
“What’s going on?” He asked in the standard just been woken up voice, squinting up at Nick.
“The babies are coming.” Nick told him softly.
“I know Nick that’s why we’re at the hospital.” Greg sighed with a roll of his eyes.
“No, you dork, the babies are coming NOW. As in the next couple of minutes probably.” That got Greg’s attention and he sat up straight in his chair.
“Right now? They’re coming right now?” He asked.
“Yes.” Nick said with a chuckle.
“Well then what the heck are we doing sitting here?!” Greg said alarmed and stood up, pulling Nick from the room as the older man laughed and said a hurried goodbye to Sara and the kids.
-- -- --
Everything happened in a blur. Nurses were everywhere and doctors seemed to multiplying by the second. Greg felt like he couldn’t turn around without bumping into someone or getting in someone’s way. It had been like that for the other three too.
Also not uncommon was the feeling that it was all happening too fast. It felt to Greg like they’d just entered the hospital a short while ago and already it was the main event. Even with Aidan, who’d taken a grand total of 36 hours of labour to enter the world, it had felt to Greg, once the labour actually started, like he’d been there for less then an hour.
“Okay I can see the first head, don’t push for a moment Leighanne.” Dr. Paul instructed and his words brought Greg’s attention to focus like a laser beam. Suddenly it felt like no one else was in the room but him, Nick, Leighanne and the doctor.
He was about to become a father for the second time. In mere minutes he’d be the father of 4, “Okay the head is out.” Dr. Paul updated to the populous, “Suction.” He asked one of the nurses, “All right Leighanne don’t push quite as hard. Dial it down a bit.” He instructed and it was less then a minute later that the room was filled with the shrill sound of a baby’s first cry; Greg thought it was the best sound in the world, “We’ve got a baby girl.” Dr. Paul announced.
“A girl? I have a daughter?” Greg asked in astonishment and felt Nick pull him to his side and kiss his temple.
“Who’s cutting the cord?” Dr Paul asked. Greg looked at Nick who rolled his eyes with a smile and pushed Greg towards the doctor. Greg’s hand shook as he cut the cord, his eyes more on the perfect little human being in Dr. Paul’s arms. She was transferred to a nurse holding a blanket and she brought the baby over to a table to clean her off.
Greg followed and watched in amazement as they cleaned his daughter and attached a hospital bracelet to her ankle and wrist. It still amazed Greg that the hospital, a place that had meant so much suffering to him and Nick over the years, could yield something so beautiful and pure.
The little girl sure did have a set of lungs on her as she continued to cry at the top of them. Greg reached a hand to touch her, “Shhhhh, its okay.” He whispered and felt tears prick his eyes as the baby took hold of the finger he’d been using to rub her arm.
He felt Nick at his back and turned to meet Nick’s smiling face with a giant smile of his own, “There’s still one more coming.” Nick whispered as if to remind his husband and it was good he had; Greg was so caught with his daughter he forgot she was part of a pair.
He reluctantly left her side and made his way back over to the doctor and Leighanne. His eyebrows furrowed when he didn’t see Dr. Paul where he should have been. The man was instead up at Leighanne’s stomach; feeling it while looking intently at the read-out from the fetal heart monitor, “What’s wrong?” Greg asked concerned.
Dr. Paul sighed before answering, “Baby B is going into distress. It’s still lying lengthwise and its heart rate is far above what it should be; the cord might be wrapped around its head.” Dr. Paul paused before continuing, “I don’t want you to panic but this is the point I was talking about earlier, we’ve got to do a C-section if Baby B is going to…”
He stopped talking and set his mouth into a grim line but he didn’t need to finish for the crowd to get the gist. It was a either a C-section or the little girl lying on the table behind their backs wouldn’t have a twin. Greg felt like he couldn’t breath, a strange contrast to the feeling of euphoria he had just experienced. He knew Dr. Paul had said not to panic but that was almost always the universal sign TO panic.
Dr. Paul left Leighanne’s side and walked up to Nick and Greg, “I mean it fellas, there is no need to panic, but we do have to get a move on. The only thing is that in these situations I can only have one other person in the room with her.” He said with sympathy.
Nick knew right away who it should be but he turned to Greg to see if he felt differently. Greg was looking at him with a look, though, that told Nick he knew who it should be too but was unsure if it was the right choice, “Go.” Nick whispered.
“Are you sure?” Greg asked.
“Of course I’m sure. I’ll hang back and take care of our baby girl. I’ll be in the waiting room waiting to here if it’s a boy or a girl so don’t go passing out or anything in the operating room.” He said, trying to lighten the mood.
“The number of autopsy’s I’ve been too? This is nothing.” Greg cracked softly and grabbed Nick’s hand, unsure he could do this without him.
“Greg if you’re coming we’ve got to go now.” Dr. Paul said as Greg was handed blue hospital scrubs.
“Go.” Nick whispered again, shaking Greg’s hand he held in his, “Take care of them.” He said nodding in Leighanne’s direction.
Greg nodded and squeezed Nick’s hand once before letting it go and jogging towards the bed that was being wheeled out of the room.
Nick stuck his hands in his pockets as the room slowly emptied save the nurses still attending to their daughter, his mouth now set into a grim line and worry lines creased his forehead. He hoped the next time he saw his husband it would be good news on his lips but all he could do now was wait.
