AN: This is my second shot at Nick/Greg. If I fail abysmally then I’ll quit, but I always say try everything at least twice. So tell me how this one is.
I've never been the kind to ever let my feelings show
And I thought that being' strong meant never losing' your self-control
But I'm just drunk enough to let go of my pain
To hell with my pride, let it fall like rain
From my eyes
Tonight I wanna cry
~Tonight I Wanna Cry~ Keith Urban
Nick sat in his truck in the crime labs parking lot. All of the company trucks were parked in their spaces, so Nick knew that the reason he was here tonight was in the building. Only problem was he was afraid he was going to lose his job for coming to the lab drunk. Even if he was off shift. He opened the door to his truck and got out into the pouring rain. He locked his door and slammed it shut. He walked across the lot getting more and more wet with every step, but he didn’t let the freezing cold deter him from his task. He was going to go in that building and fix everything. He had to. After what happened that morning, he had no choice.
Flashback
Nick was sitting in the break room waiting for the rest of the team to finish their cases. He had wrapped his hit and run in three hours and twenty-two minutes, a new best time for him. He was waiting for the guys to have breakfast with him. Sara and Warrick walked into the break room and over to the coffee machine.
“Hey, you guys want to get breakfast?”
“Man, I’m beat. I’m going home to sleep. I’m on call in four hours,” Warrick said pouring two cups of coffee.
“Yeah, Ecklie’s a few short so I’m on call too. I want to get as much sleep as I can before he calls,” Sara said taking the coffee Warrick offered her.
“Okay, that’s cool. I know how that is. Drive safe. Text me when you get home.” Warrick and Sara nodded in agreement and walked out the door. Grissom was the next to walk in the room followed shortly by Greg. “Hey you guys want breakfast?”
“None for me,” Grissom said. “I have to get home. Have some things to do.” Nick nodded and watched as Grissom walked out of the room and Catherine walked in.
“Want to go to breakfast?” Nick asked.
“Linds has a parent-teacher thing this morning. Gotta be there in thirty minutes.”
“Okay, I’ll see you later.” Nick sighed and looked up at Greg. “You up for breakfast.” Greg smiled.
“Never turned down food before.” Nick smiled and stood up.
“Great. I’m buying.”
“Yes. Free food.” Greg followed Nick out to his truck and got in. Nick pulled out of the parking lot and turned onto the road. Nick drove silently occasionally looking out of the side of his eye at Greg. Greg had his head leaned against the head rest and his eyes closed.
“So how have you been doing?” Nick asked pulling Greg out of his relaxing moment.
“Good.”
“How are the nightmares?” Greg’s head popped up and he looked at Nick.
“Nightmares?”
“Yeah, I still have them. About being stuck in the box. Most of the times they end in me shooting myself because you didn’t make it in time.”
“I…” Greg paused and looked out the window. “I wanted to find you so bad. I felt like a failure every time we hit a dead end.” Nick smiled.
“You found me, that’s all that matters. I’m fine now.” Greg nodded his head. “Well I just assumed that you had nightmares about what those creeps did to you.”
“Oh, no.”
“But you have nightmares.” Nick didn’t need to ask. Greg looked like he hadn’t slept more than two hours a night in weeks, maybe months. He was pale and looked like he had lost ten or fifteen pounds leaving Greg smaller than himself. Greg nodded and closed his eyes again. “What about?”
“Staring at that computer. Seeing you silently scream, hit the box, the worst ones end in you shooting yourself. I wake up covered in sweat, screaming. I end up having to cry myself back to sleep.” Nick looked at Greg.
“Why me?”
“I don’t know. I think it’s because I…” Greg paused and sighed. “I love you.” Nick pulled the truck into the parking lot of the diner. He put the truck in park and turned it off, turning to Greg.
“I’m really flattered that you do and that you told me. I love you too, but only as best friends.” Greg shook his head.
“I didn’t tell you so that you would say it back. I told you so you’d know why we can’t hang out anymore. I can’t do this. Every time I look at you, smell you, brush up against you, my senses go into overload and I can’t concentrate on anything. I just want you to know why we have to go back to being co-workers.” Nick sighed. “I’ll just go home. I can catch a cab from here.”
“No, we’ll have breakfast. As co-workers.” Greg smiled and nodded. They got out of the truck and walked into the diner.
End Flashback
Nick looked at the double doors not sure what was getting him wetter, the rain or the tears, but he couldn’t push the handle on the door. He felt so cold, but his feet were stuck to the ground. He heard steps behind him and he felt someone stop beside him.
“Nicky, you okay?” Nick turned and looked at Hodges. “You’re going to get sick. Come inside.” Nick nodded and let Hodges push him in the door. He stopped right inside and Hodges stopped and looked at him. “What’s wrong Nicky?”
“I messed up. I have to fix it.”
“What’d you mess up?” Nick remained silent, not wanting to give up his secret. “It’ll be okay. Go tell him you messed up.” Hodges smiled and patted Nick lightly on the shoulder. He walked down the hall leaving Nick to stand alone. Nick sighed and started walking. He tread the familiar path to the place he knew Greg would be. He passed the print lab first and barely missed Mandy walking out into the hall.
“Nick? What are you doing here?” Mandy asked. Nick knew he’d pay later for ignoring her but he couldn’t stop to talk. He needed to find Greg.
“Nicky? What’s up?” Bobby asked as he passed. Nick just kept walking leaving Bobby alone to turn around and stare with Mandy. Nick walked past evidence and narrowly avoided colliding head first with Warrick and Catherine who were walking out.
“Nick? Why are you here?” Catherine asked. Nick grimaced as he kept walking. “NICK.” Catherine screamed. Nick knew he’d possibly get reprimanded for ignoring her, not to mention coming into the lab drunk.
“NICK.” Warrick yelled. Nick kept walking ignoring his best friend. Catherine and Warrick followed Nick down the hall. Nick walked past Grissom’s office and saw Griss out of the corner of his eye walking out of his office, probably to see what the yelling was about.
“Nick stop,” Grissom said. Nick was so getting fired for this. He turned the corner sharply and walked into the DNA lab passing Wendy and walking over to Greg, pulling him quickly into his arms and kissing him hard. Greg froze, shocked and confused, for a second before relaxing and kissing Nick back wrapping his arms around Nick’s back. Nick sucked Greg’s lower lip between his lips and Greg moaned. Nick released Greg’s lip and pulled back panting. Greg opened his eyes not remembering closing them and looked at Nick.
“I love you, Greg.” Greg smiled and pulled Nick forward into a tight hug.
“I love you too Nick.” Nick sighed into Greg’s shoulder and closed his eyes, not caring how much trouble he was in or how long he’d be suspended for. As long as he got to hold Greg like this forever. And as he sat there holding Greg. He let the tears he was holding in go, like the rain pouring outside.
