Summary: Post ep for Feeling the Heat. Greg's angst about the case and the events afterwards. What? You thought you were getting rid of me that easily? No way!
"Are you sure that you want to do this, Nick?" Greg was apprehensive to say the least. It wasn't that he didn't want to tell the team about their daughter, he had been the one who pushed for it. No, Greg was apprehensive about Nick and whether or not he'd actually do it.
"Yeah, I am. She's been our secret for too long, G. I want our friends to meet her."
"But you know that our friends meeting her means that our friends will find out about us."
"Yeah."
"And you're okay with that?" Greg was shocked at Nick's new found confidence. When they'd come home from Texas, Nick had been more attentive than ever. Greg supposed that Nick facing the idea of losing them forever had made him fearless. And it only took a few months before Nick came to Greg one day and told him what he'd been waiting for since the beginning of their relationship.
"I'm ready. Let's tell them."
"You're okay with them knowing?"
"I'm not ashamed of us." Nick spoke with a tinge of regret.
Greg shot him a look from the passenger seat of Nick's truck.
"Anymore." Nick corrected himself, smiling and taking Greg's hand in his. He looked into the rear-view mirror at their almost-one-year old daughter and smiled to himself quietly. It was definitely time for everyone to meet her and to see how amazing she was and how happy she made them.
"Okay. I just don't want you to feel like I pushed you into this. I mean, I know I did but I wouldn't want you to do anything that would make you unhappy or make you uncomfortable, and I know that-"
"Baby, please. You're not making me do this, okay? I'm a grown man. I can make decisions for myself, and this is one of them."
"Okay." Greg sighed softly and attempted to calm the nerves that were rising in his stomach. "Okay."
The rest of the drive to the lab was spent in relative silence, except for the occasional coo-ing noises from the backseat. Amelia had just begun trying to talk, but despite Greg's insistence that the first word out of her mouth would be "Daddy", it was actually 'Dog.' Or at least, what Nick and Greg presumed to be dog.
Nick pulled into the CSI parking lot, and unstrapped his seatbelt before sending Greg a final look.
"Okay. Let's go do this." Leaning across and giving him a quick peck on the lips, Nick climbed out and opened the rear passenger door, carefully unstrapped Amelia and transferred her to his hip. He kissed the top of her head softly and marvelled at how much hair she had. It wouldn't be long before she'd need a haircut, and he hoped against hope that Greg wasn't the one behind the scissors.
Greg was walking in front of Nick, leading the way into the building. It gave Nick a few more seconds to decide whether or not to change his mind, but once he saw the reflection of Greg's smile in the glass doors, he knew that he would never do that. Upon entering the lab, he noticed that the day-shift receptionist was still there.
"Nick, Greg! You're here early, graveyard doesn't start for another fifteen minutes."
"Hi Susie. Yeah, we know. We just ... uh, well I just wanted to get some things straightened out first." Nick stammered, but kept collected and smiled politely at her. "When the rest of the team get here, could you ... uh, could you tell them to meet us in the breakroom?"
"Well sure, I guess so. I'll send them in." She paused looking thoughtful before smirking a little. "Grissom too?"
Nick and Greg looked between each other and chuckled slightly.
"Yeah, Grissom too."
The team arrived in the break room in one group, obviously having come across each other in the foyer or on the way. They all seemed abuzz with what Nick's news could be, but he doubted any of them expected what was coming. They stopped short in their tracks on entering the room to see Nick sitting at the desk with a baby in his arms, playing with her hands softly and bouncing his knee up and down causing a number of giggles to escape the little girls mouth.
"Hey Nicky. That's the baby you had at the airport, right? Your niece." Warrick was the first one to speak, not surprisingly.
"No." Nick answered forcefully, possibly even a little bit more hostile than he had wanted. "I mean ... yeah, it is but ... Okay, sit down. All of you."
Greg watched from a chair at the end of the table. The team obviously thought he had just arrived prior to them, not making the connection to him and Nick arriving together.
"Okay." Nick sighed heavily, before standing up and handing Amelia to Greg, who looked surprised but gratefully accepted his smiling daughter into his arms. Sitting down again, Nick began to speak. Softly at first, but just looking at Greg and Amelia made him stronger in his convictions. "She is the baby that you saw with me at the airport, Warrick. But she's not my niece."
"Okay then." Warrick seemed perplexed, and spoke slowly as though he was trying to process what the hell was going on.
"Nick, we have work to do. So could you possibly make this announcement any quicker?" Trust Grissom to put a rush on one of the most important conversations of Nick's life.
"Sure." He paused, thinking of the simplest way to put what he needed to say before deciding to just go for it. "She's my daughter."
Collective gasps from the room signaled to Nick that this news was definitely a surprise. But it wasn't enough to deter him.
"And I kept her a secret for so many reasons, but enough is enough. She's a part of my life and so are you, so in light of that I want you to meet Amelia Jaimee Sanders-Stokes."
The room fell silent as four pairs of eyes plus Nick's went flying down the table and landed on Greg who was smiling proudly at his boyfriend, while still continuing to dote on his daughter.
"Hold it!" Warrick, the voice of reason, stopped the staring contest between the team and Greg, and spoke loudly. "What the hell is going on here?"
"I have a daughter. Well, no ... Greg and I have a daughter. And we've been together for the past three years."
"Why didn't you tell us, Nicky?" Catherine interjected, still watching Amelia intently but directing the question toward Nick and possibly even Greg if he were listening.
"I don't know, I guess ... I was ashamed. I thought you would judge us, or even worse that you would judge her."
"Is that how little you think of us, Nick?" Sara spoke for the first time, looking hurt at the accusation.
"No. I mean ... I was just scared, Sara. Haven't you ever been so scared that you'd do anything to protect the truth?"
A look of guilt crossed Sara's face, but was quickly replaced with a look of understanding as she nodded and smiled sadly.
"Nick, can I talk to you outside for a second?" Warrick motioned to the door of the breakroom and walked out, waiting for Nick to follow him. On his way out he sent a look toward Greg who smiled back in support.
"What's the deal, man?" Warrick looked confused and hurt, which was something that Nick had never really seen on Warrick.
"I don't know, man. I mean ... I wanted to tell you, I wanted to tell all of you. But I was shit-scared that you guys'd hate me. Or that you wouldn't want to be friends anymore, man. Cos you know ... of the whole gay thing."
"Like I give a shit who you get into bed with, Nick! You're my brother, I just wish that you had of told me earlier. I missed out on like a year of my best friends daughters life."
"Only 11 months, 'Rick" Nick smiled slightly, as Warrick pulled him into a manly hug.
"This isn't ... turning you on, is it Nick?"
Nick laughed and pushed Warrick away, punching him on the arm just for good measure.
"Shut up, bro."
"Just checking. You know how it is. Now lets go before Griss has her eating chocolate covered crickets."
As the two men walked into the breakroom, they were instantly met with the sound of clucky women fawning over Amelia.
"She's got your eyes, Greg. I mean ... I don't even know if she's yours, or whatever. But she does."
"Yeah, she does. And she is Greg's." Nick announced, walking over and standing behind his boyfriend and daughter. He placed his hands on Greg's shoulders, leaning down and kissing Amelia on the head. "We'll tell you that story eventually, but it doesn't really matter where she came from. All that matters is that she's here now."
"She's beautiful, you guys." Sara complimented, her smile now genuine. "And congratulations on keeping three years and a baby a secret!"
"Three years, a baby, two apartments and a breakup thankyou very much" Greg smiled, leaning his head on Nick's hand that was still on his shoulder. "But once again, that's a story for a rainy day."
"Uhm... " Grissom had been watching the scene before him play out, opting to stay out of the babytalk and the congratulatory hugs. "This isn't going to affect your work is it?"
"Oh Grissom, stop being such a prune. Come and meet her." Catherine pushed the older man over to where Nick had taken Amelia from Greg's arms, and was rocking slowly with her drooping her eyes.
"Do you want to hold her?" Nick asked softly so as not to wake her.
"Uh... Sure, I guess."
He handed his daughter to his boss and watched as she continued sleeping in Grissom's arms. It was a strange sight, but one that was not all too awkward. Grissom even looked somewhat natural with a sleeping baby in his arms, and Nick could swear he saw Sara tear up. He reminded himself that he had to find out what the deal was between them at a later date.
"And by the way, it won't affect our work. I mean, it hasn't so far right, G?"
Nick turned around when Greg failed to answer him, only to be met with the sight of Greg slumped over the table snoring softly. It seemed as though Amelia wasn't the only tired one in the Sanders-Stokes family.
"Greg..." Nick shook him gently, waking him out of his slumber.
"What? No, I'm not hungry." Greg mumbled, looking around the room confused as everybody laughed to themselves.
"It's okay, honey." Nick stroked his back gently and kissed his temple, earning him a chorus of 'aww's from the girls and a 'dude' from Warrick.
"Take the night off, boys." Grissom said, handing Amelia back to Nick. "You deserve it for keeping this under wraps for so long."
Dear Amelia.
You won't read this until you're older, but today is your first birthday. It seems only weeks, no, days ago that we brought you home from the hospital. And we know that it's a cliched thing to say, but it's the truth. You were so tiny, we thought you were going to break, but even then we knew how beautiful you were and how beautiful you would become.

The first time we met you it was like the world opened up and swallowed all of the bad inside of us. Because you purified us and you gave us everything that we never knew we were missing. You were so little, but you had more good in you that second than we ever had, or ever will have.
We swore to you that day that you would be the most important thing to us forever. And we intend to keep that promise, because even though there were times when you were too little to remember that it seemed like we were being selfish, you were always our priority. Then, now and forever. We will always protect you.

You grew up so quickly in those first few months, it seemed as though everyday you learned something new and we never wanted to stop seeing what you had taught yourself or how you'd changed, seemingly overnight.

We're not going to hide who you are from you. Because you deserve to know the truth about who you are and where you're from. And you will, when the time is right and you're ready to hear the whole story, we won't keep any secrets. But remember that even though you never had a Mommy, you have two Daddies who love you so much that they would give the world for you to be happy.

And you were such a happy baby, and you brought so much happiness into our home and into our life. We didn't even realize that before you were born, our hearts had been missing something. We thought we were happy. But then there was you, and happiness became all relative to how you are. When you're sad, our hearts don't feel whole. When you laugh, it's the most amazing sound in the world. Even now, when you're much older than you were when we wrote this. Remember that we still love the way you laugh. Don't ever let anybody change you.

Of course, you weren't always happy. You had your moments, just like your children will. But even when your ear-piercing scream rang out through our house, it just reminded us of how lucky we are to have you, and for you to be healthy and okay. We still feel that grateful.

There is so much we could say to you, Amelia. But so much of it we hope you already know. That you are the reason and the meaning behind all that we do and we will sacrifice everything for you to be happy, until the day we die. It doesn't matter to us who you decide to be. You can be whoever you want to be, Amelia. Trust us when we tell you that we will love you no matter what.

The world is yours, baby girl. Take it with both hands and run with it, but whatever you don't take it for granted.
This is the only shot we get, so don't waste it on the what if's, or the unknown.
We love you. Now dazzle the world with your brilliance.
Love forever, your Dad's.
