Genre: Angst. Romance. Post-Ep.
Summary: Post ep for Feeling the Heat. Greg's angst about the case and the events afterwards. This one is a short chapter.

“You’ve got mail.”

 

The cheerful AOL message startled Greg while he cleared away the breakfast dishes. His eyes darted across the room to his laptop, sitting on the coffee table. The message echoed throughout his two bedroom apartment, and he hoped that it hadn’t been loud enough to wake Amelia in the next room.

 

It had been six weeks. After about two, Greg realised that he couldn’t afford to live in a hotel for the rest of his life, so he found himself a small apartment and he and Amelia moved in almost immediately. Living without Nick was something that Greg was slowly getting accustomed to. Coming home to an empty place with Amelia wasn’t at all easy, but it was getting easier the more they did it. They had fallen into a nice routine, with her day-care and his work. It was almost as though they’d been doing it forever.

 

Greg wiped his hands on a dishtowel and walked over to the couch, sitting down and clicking the familiar icon on the desktop. He sighed when he saw who it was from. It wasn’t the first time Nick had emailed him, and he presumed that it wouldn’t be the last. He hadn’t responded thus far, he almost didn’t have the courage to type what he wanted to say. And even though he couldn’t avoid Nick at work, he kept their relationship strictly professional and delivered his results to him without a hint of compassion. Greg was just convinced that there was no way he could fix their relationship.

Dear Mr Stokes,

           

Your flight reservation has been confirmed.

I am sorry, I am not capable of being brief

Oh my god! yes! I haven't commented thus far because I wasn't sure how to put how I feel about it, it brings out very strong emotions in me (probably cause I am the mother of a 10 month old). At first I was going to say that I didn't like it but, that is not true because I do really like the story (in fact I love it!) I rush to read it every time you update. I realize now that it just frustrates me terribly, because I love Nicks character, and here he is just acting so stupid and like such an a**hole. I just cannot believe that he could actually believe that he could possible keep a child a secret from the world for the next what 18+ yrs. What about when the child grows up! They tend to say whats on their minds, I have friends that have a 5 yr old daughter and she will tell anybody (in the park, in the checkout line, at school) that she has 2 daddies. Was Nick actually planning to look in that little girls face and tell her you can't tell anyone I'm your daddy, your a secret. That to me is just horrible, the poor girl will grow up with a complex she'll think there is something wrong with her. Then with part 4 you made me realize that he wasn't thinking at all. Not about the future not about any moment beyond the moment he was in. That to me was clear when he was shocked that Greg leaving meant Amelia was going too.

I hope that Greg will give him the chance to step up and be a man. I hope that Nick will step up and be a man because like I said I love his character and I know he has it in him. I know they can be happy and I hope they will be. It is said you never know what you have till its gone, I hope Nick is realizing how much he loves and needs both of them.

If this diatribe hasn't let you know, I love this story and can't wait for more.

Well, Nick thinking he could keep her a secret is actually based on reality. I was a secret for the first 9 or so months of my life. I don't know if the reasons were the same as Nick's, but when I was told about it, it sort of clicked as something that someone as tormented as Nick would do if he were ever in that situation. And about your friends 5 year old, I was exactly the same way. It was usually the first thing out of my mouth because I loved the way people acted like it was really unusual. Now I'm more hesitant about it because I've been jaded by society, but never to the point where I wouldn't tell anyone if they asked or keep it a secret.

On the subject of Nick stepping up to be a man, lets just say that I have a hard time writing sad endings.

Damn! I just read both chapters six and seven, and all that angst in ch 6 was great (Greg was firm and steadfast)and them BAM we got some potential happiness on the way. Talk about mood swings!! This si one hell of a great story.
