Chapter 20

          “Twins?”

          “Twins!”

          “WHAT?!”

The doctor startled at the varying reactions he received, “Well yes. Here is head number one and all the way down here is head number two. Two heads, two spines, two sets of legs, two heart beats…twins.”

“But we only ordered one.” Greg said accusingly.

Nick wrapped an arm around his husband’s shoulders, “I think what he’s trying to say is, how can this happen? Neither Greg or Leighanne have twins in their family.”

The doctor nodded, “Normally that’s how it works. But heredity or not, with insemination it is not uncommon to have multiple births. I’m actually surprised out of four times I’ve seen you three this is the first multiple.” He commented looking again at the ultra sound screen.

“But…but…but…” Greg stuttered wide eye, his face paling considerably.

“Greg, are you all right?” The doctor asked professionally. Greg nodded but couldn’t seem to grab enough air into his lungs. The doctor advanced on Greg, purposefully, until he was waved off by Nick.

“Just give us a minute.” He whispered placing a hand on Greg’s heaving shoulders and walking him out of the room.

“What’s wrong Daddy?” Nick cringed when he realized what exactly was outside the room.

“Nothing Char. Daddy’s fine.” Nick smiled, patting Charlie’s shoulder and directing Greg into the examination room next to the one Leighanne and the doctor sat in. Nick closed the door behind him and turned to find Greg pacing.

“Twins. Two heads. Two bodies. Two people. Twins!” he muttered to himself turning sharply to look at Nick as if he held all the answers.

“Greg, honey, you’re panicking.” Nick said guardedly almost afraid of the manic gaze in Greg’s eyes.

“Yes. Join me, won’t you?!” Greg exclaimed throwing his arms out to the side.

“Why are YOU panicking? This was your idea in the first place.” Nick reminded.

“I signed on for one. One! Not two. One! Two is too many. Two makes five. Five is too many. Why aren’t you with me on the ‘five is too many’ thing?” Greg asked rapidly.

“Trust me.” Nick said placing a hand on Greg’s shoulder and looking him in the eye, “Give me an hour and the ‘five is too many thing’ will hit me like a stone.” He laughed, “But really what can we do? Take one of the twins and have an option to buy on the other one if we decide that maybe we want another kid somewhere down the road?”

“No, of course not.” Greg sighed and then paused, “Wait; do they actually let you do that?” He asked.

“Greg!” Nick said alarmed with a chuckle as Greg laughed; the panic in the room dissolving.

“Twins. That’s two whole babies at the same time. Two whole people.” Greg sighed to himself, considerably more calm then he had been when they first entered the room.

“We’ve been over that, yeah.” Nick agreed, nodding to himself. He pointed the exam table out to Greg and they both hopped up to sit next to each other on it.

They were quiet for a moment or two, both watching as they swung their legs back and forth against the side of the table. Both lost in thought.

“Might be kinda fun you know.” Nick said softly with a shrug.

“We could put them in little matching outfits.” Greg nodded with a chuckle realizing he and Nick had been thinking the same thing.

“What if one’s a boy and one’s a girl?” Nick asked skeptically.

“They have girl and boy versions of the same outfit.” Greg argued and Nick ‘ah’ed with realization before leaning over to kiss Greg on the shoulder. Greg hummed and ran a hand throw Nick’s hair.

Both turned as they heard the door creek open and the doctor poked his head in, “Just came to check if everything was okay. Didn’t want to have anyone pass out on me or something.” He cracked and Nick and Greg chuckled.

“Nah I think we’re okay.” Nick nodded looking at Greg for conformation.

Greg nodded with a small smile before turning to the doctor, “How’s Leighanne?” He asked softly.

“Better once the shock wore off.” The doctor smiled, “We’re actually through here. Leighanne is just waiting to see if you two were okay.”

“We’ll be right out.” Nick nodded.

The doctor smiled again and went to leave the room before turning back in, “I almost forgot. Will you be wanting a video of the ultra sound?” He asked.

Greg nodded, “Please. I think I kind of missed a good majority of it.” He cracked. The doctor nodded with a breath of laughter before closing the door behind him.

Nick and Greg hopped off the table walked slowly from the room. Greg opened the door for Nick and before he passed through it, Nick stopped and turned to Greg with a questioning gaze, “You know this puts the count out of whack again. I’ve got two while you now have three.” He said thoughtfully.

“Well, cowboy, you’re just going to have to deal with that or get another husband because there is no way in HELL I’m wittingly having six or more kids.” Greg exclaimed and Nick whooped with laughter as he walked from the room. Greg just rolled his eyes with a chuckle before following his husband out.

Catherine sighed as she passed the sixth room on her search for Nick that night, only to find him not inside it. There were only so many places the man could be hiding but in the course of one shift Catherine had managed to lose him twice. The first time that night he’d left the crime scene without telling her in favour of heading back to the lab. He’d told her twenty minutes earlier he would be in DNA; but not only could she not find him there, she couldn’t find him anywhere.

“Warrick, have you seen Nick?” She asked exasperatedly, leaning against the seventh doorway she passed where Warrick sat picking through garbage.

He looked over at Catherine with a cringe, “You’d think I could get Sanders to do the dirty work considering I outrank him. But nooooooo. I’m beginning to this Grissom has a beef with me.” He sighed.

“Greg’s trying to get a promotion, give him a break. He seems really gung ho about making it to the next level.” Warrick nodded to himself and looked down at his garbage, “But have you seen Nick?” Catherine asked when Warrick made no move to answer her question.

“What? Oh, no. Last time I saw him was the locker room before assignments. Ask Greg. He’s in the garage.” Warrick mumbled and Catherine sighed, pushing herself from the door jam and walking briskly down the hall. The click-clack of her heels on the linoleum echoing in the windowed maze.

She found Greg crouched next to a sports car in the garage, admiring more so then processing, “Have you seen Nick?” She asked without even saying hello. She was getting tired of not being able to find her partner.

Greg looked up surprised to hear the voice and paused a moment before answering, “No.” He said shortly, confused as to why she was asking him.

“He hasn’t walked by? Popped in to say hello or tell you why he’s avoiding me?” Catherine asked annoyed, her hands on her hips.

Greg laughed and pushed up on his knees to stand up, “I doubt very much he’s avoiding you Catherine. Did you try paging him?”

“Four times.” Catherine answered with pursed lips.

Greg sighed and walked over to a table piled with equipment. He reached under the jacket he’d worn to work and pulled out his pager. He looked down at it and chuckled before showing it to Catherine.

Catherine squinted at the pager and sighed when she saw that ‘Greg’ had four missed pages from Catherine, “Pagers got switched on the nightstands I’d bet. He sets his on vibrate because it never leaves his hip; mine blares music. There was no reason to keep it next to me. I’ll page mine.” He chuckled typing rapidly on Nick’s pager and looking at Catherine with a nod when he was finished.

They stood in silence waiting for a response. Said response came in two ways. Nick’s pager vibrated and lit up in Greg’s hand while ‘Baby Got Back’ rang out from somewhere nearby. Greg laughed and looked at the pager’s screen, “He’s just down the hall. Evidence room four.” Greg supplied.

“Finally.” Catherine said exasperatedly and click-clacked quickly from the room as Greg chuckled behind her.

-- -- --

“You know I could have solved our case three times in the time it took me to solve the case of the missing Nick.” Catherine sighed walking into the evidence room Nick sat in. She paused when she found him sitting almost in the dark, no work out in front of him and a thoughtful expression on his face, “What’s wrong Nicky.” She asked, switching quickly from pissed off coworker to concerned friend.

Nick shrugged and reached a hand up to pull at the loosening black edge of the evidence table in front of him, “Just thinking Cath.”

“About?” Catherine asked leaning her hands on the evidence table kitty corner to where Nick sat.

Again Nick shrugged, “Life.” He said softly. Catherine knitted her eyebrows together, wondering what had caused such a change in Nick’s demeanor; he’d been fine at the beginning of shift. Just as she was about to formulate a response he spoke again, “Greg and I are having another baby.” He said softly.

Catherine’s eyes widened but a smile spread across her lips, “Nicky that’s great!” She said happily.

Nick nodded but didn’t share Catherine’s enthusiasm, “Yeah. A little scary but if Greg can get this promotion and we really work at it we can do it. But then today we went to an ultrasound and…” He paused.

          “And what?” Catherine asked softly.

“We’re having twins.” Nick said with a laugh as if he still couldn’t quite believe it.

          “Woah.” Catherine whispered.

“At the doctor’s office I was the one calming Greg down; telling him everything would be okay. But I’ve been sitting here thinking and it hit me that there is no possible way we can support five children. We can’t send five children to college, we can barely keep up with the bills with three. And how are we going to care for twin newborns with the schedules we pull. There is always the option of one of us staying home 24/7 but then that doesn’t really do much to help the financial problems. Not to mention we don’t get any sleep as it is and with twins?” Nick paused and shook his head disbelievingly, “But then…then I’ve been thinking that none of that matters to me. I know I should be feeling overwhelmed and just about ready to scream, but I can’t find it in myself to feel anything other then complete joy. That’s not me. I’m the one that fought against this in the first place. I’m the neurotic worrier and I’m just not. Worried that is. How fucked up is that?” He asked with a shake of his head.

“So you’ve been sitting here berating yourself for feeling happy that you’re having two more children?” Catherine asked to clarify and Nick nodded with a small chuckle, “There’s nothing wrong with being happy about this Nicky. I can remember after Lindsay was born and Eddie and I were having problems I had no idea how I was going raise my daughter on my own. But then I would look down at that little person in the crib and it didn’t matter. Nothing did. Not the problems I was having with Eddie, not the bills; nothing. You shouldn’t feel bad for feeling happy that you’re about to go through one of the most fulfilling journeys you can go through with the man you love for the fourth time. Some people only wish to be so lucky.” Catherine reasoned.

“You’re right Cath.” Nick sighed with a smile, “I’m ecstatic about this!” He exclaimed chuckling to himself and shaking his head.

Catherine smiled, “Well I’m happy for you and Greg. Have you told the rest of the team?”

Nick shook his head, “No, but I guess this is as good a time as any.” He pulled his/Greg’s pager from his belt clip and punched numbers quickly before hitting send and standing up. He smiled at Catherine and hugged her lightly to him before he walked from the room. She smiled and followed him out.

-- -- --

Nick walked into the garage to find Greg lying flat out under the red sports car and smiled as he walked quietly over to the table of equipment his pager was sitting on. He picked it up and dialed Greg’s and watched Greg jump as the song echoed along the garage walls.

Greg slide out from under the car and sat up looking confused and accusatory towards the sound. His features softened when he saw Nick and Nick laughed, “We must curb Charlie’s pranking nature or else it will just escalate.”

“I don’t know where he learns all of these things.” Greg nodded with a chuckle, knowing just as Nick had that it wasn’t just accident that they ended up with each other’s pager.

“We’ll just have to make sure the twins don’t follow in his footsteps. He’s not allowed to have any contact with them.” Nick cracked up at his own joke.

Greg’s smile widened at the mention of the twins. So natural and right, “Nah, he’ll be more grown up by then.” Nick threw Greg an amused glance and Greg nodded, “Okay he won’t. Let’s hope they’re girls.” He reasoned and Nick chuckled.

“You paged?” Grissom asked poking his head into the garage. Greg looked curiously at Nick, who just smiled and grabbed Greg’s hand before ushering Grissom into the room. Grissom was followed by Sara, Catherine and Warrick.

“They have to know sooner or later.” Nick whispered into Greg’s ear and Greg beamed at the suggestion.

“So what’s up? Some of us have garbage to attend to.” Warrick said sullenly eyeing the sports car that Greg got to process.

“Well Greg and I have something to tell you guys…” Nick started and watched as Catherine smirked to herself and he smiled himself, squeezing Greg’s hand that he currently held in his. He felt Greg squeeze back and had to take a deep breath at the wave of euphoria that passed through him.

Aww! I loved how the both of them freaked out in such different ways. :) This line made me laugh out loud:

“Yes. Join me, won’t you?!” Greg exclaimed throwing his arms out to the side.

Nice. :)

Somehow, I missed this one..sorry. The boys are so cute as the news sinks in that their family is really growing by leaps and bounds. :) It would've been fun to see how Aidan and Charlie took the news. Thanks for the fun of them adjusting to the news. I can't wait to see how they do with a set of newbprn twins! Cheers!
