Chapter 5

It was twenty minutes into the flight and Nick was still glued to his seat. The seatbelt sign had been turned off almost 10 minutes before and so they were free to roam about the cabin but Nick’s ass hadn’t moved. He stared at the back of Greg’s head trying to figure out what to say. He knew he didn’t have a lot of time and if he was going to clear the air between them he had to start soon before the plan landed and Greg’s mind had to be on the case and not on what was going on between them.

All right, he was going to do it. He was going to lift himself up, walk over to Greg and tell him everything he should have since the beginning. Just as he was about to get up though he saw Greg’s headphones pop up over the seat as he adjusted them on his ears. He suddenly realized he couldn’t disturb Greg. Greg needed to get in the right mind set; Nick knew just how important that was. But he HAD to get everything he was feeling out in the open before he ruined his ability to help Greg on the mission.

Taking a deep breath Nick pushed himself from his seat and made his way slowly towards the spiky haired head in the seat a few rows from his. He cleared his throat lamely as he stood behind Greg and then remembered that Greg couldn’t hear him. While normal people tried to save their eardrums by playing their music at a normal level while under headphones, Greg blared it as loud as he would without the headphones. He was oblivious to the world around him when listening to the hard rock on his Ipod and Nick couldn’t help but find it endearing.

He sighed and tried to compose himself before reaching out a hand to tap Greg on the shoulder. The start that gesture caused in the other man would have been funny had it not made Nick feel like a heel. Greg leapt from his seat and spun around with a glare fixed to his features as he saw Nick.

‘Good start Stokes.’ Nick scolded himself before he made a gesture for Greg to take the headphones out of his ears.

Greg complied and Nick could hear the sounds of Marilyn Manson before Greg paused the Ipod and looked at Nick expectantly, “I thought we weren’t going to plan until later.” He said massaging his ear, a telltale sign he didn’t do much flying, his ears weren’t adjusting as fast as Nick’s had.

“We, uh, aren’t.” Nick said dumbly. Why was he having such a hard time with this? It was just Greg. He’d been able to talk to Greg about anything over their time together and now he was as tongue tied as a freshman with a crush on the captain of the football team. He allowed himself a moment to wonder why THAT had been the first simile he could think of but when he saw Greg looking at him like he had three heads Nick shook his head and took a deep breath, “We need to talk.”

“About?” Greg asked crossing his arms over his chest.

“About what’s happening between us.” Nick said softly not quite meeting Greg’s eye.

“And what would that be?” Greg asked simply. It would appear he wasn’t going to make this easy for Nick.

“Look Greg the reason I reacted the way I did the other day was because…well because I don’t see you as a trainee.” Nick started but was cut off.

“Look Nick if this is going to turn into another ‘you aren’t good enough speech’, could we not? I think once is enough. I get the picture.” Greg sighed.

“But I don’t think you do.” Nick said quickly, “I didn’t mean that like that. What I mean is I don’t see you as JUST a trainee. I…oh god I can’t believe I’m actually going to say this…but I see you as so much more. Greg, you’re so talented and so smart and so much more then anyone would ever expect of you. And over the last sixth months I’ve tried to tell myself that what I feel for you is just friendship, but over the last couple of days, I’ve found out it’s not just that. Their WAS another reason why I yelled at you, well really the only reason because I don’t think for one second you’re not good enough to do this—I’m scared of losing you. I’m scared that doing this will hurt you and I don’t ever want anything to hurt you. It physically hurts to think that this may not work out and there won’t be anything I can do to stop it. So in short,” Nick sighed garnering up his courage before continuing, “I’m in love with you Greg. I think I have been all along and that is so so bad.” Nick said putting his head in his hands.

“Why is that bad?” Greg asked softly.

“Because!” Nick said raising his voice but seeing the flicker of what could only be fear pass Greg’s features he calmed himself, “Because. Because I’m your trainer. Because you’re my trainee. Because we work together. Because until yesterday I didn’t even know I liked guys. Pick one.” He said exasperatedly, “Look, nothing will ever come of this. I just needed you to know the truth so we could try to clear the air between us so that you can put your complete focus on the mission when we get off this plane.”

“Don’t you think I should get a say before you go saying nothing will ever come of this?” Greg asked softly and he wished he had a camera to capture the look on Nick’s face; it was a mixture of shock, confusion and what looked like hope, “I’m just as shocked as you are, trust me. I’ve wanted you since the first time we met but I in NO WAY thought you would EVER return the sentiment. God Nick you have no idea what you do to me. It scares me. I never let people get close but then all of a sudden my whole life shifts when something in our friendship does. But regardless of that, over the last couple of days, all I’ve needed to know was the truth. So if what you’re saying is that—the truth—then thanks.” Greg said genuinely, nodding with a sigh.

“Well I guess you’re welcome.” Nick said softly.

“So,” Greg said rocking from back and forth from the balls of his feet to his heals with his hands stuck in his back pockets and his head turned to look out the window.

“So,” Nick repeated turning to look out the same window, “I guess that’s everything that needed to be said.”

“I guess so.” Greg said slowly with a nod.

“Because even though you want me, and I want you nothing can happen because we work together.” Nick said also nodding.

“Cause we work together.” It was Greg turn to repeat as he continued to nod. The two were quiet for some time. Both looking out the same window at the white clouds and blue sky, both trying to find something to say to pass the awkward moment and move on with the rest of the mission, “You know it’s not THAT big of a deal that we work together.” Greg said shrugging.

Nick practically jumped out of his skin, “It isn’t is it?” He asked a little more excited then he really should have because he sounded like a thirteen year old boy going through puberty.

“Nope not at all.” Greg said taking a step towards the other man.

“It would be a bigger problem if I was your boss.” Nick said also taking a step towards Greg.

“Definitely a bigger problem.” Greg whispered continue to move.

“Bigger problem.” Nick whispered as the two were now less then 6 inches from each other, “But not so much of a prob…”

“Nick?” Greg asked in a whisper.

“Mmhmm?” Nick asked suddenly realizing he had been staring at Greg’s lips, but was he caring? Not in the least.

“Shut up and kiss me.” Greg sighed as he could almost FEEL Nick’s lips on his.

“Good plan.” Nick smiled before he closed the remaining space between them and their lips connected for the first time. Suddenly it didn’t matter what kind of problems this would incur, all that matter was that Greg’s lips were the softest things he had ever felt.

The kiss started off slow, both testing the waters, before Greg decided that slow was not going to work for him as he slid his hands around Nick’s waist, pulled him forward to mold their bodies together and traced Nick’s lips with his tongue asking for entry.

Entry was granted and both men sighed as their tongues touched. The feeling was almost overwhelming for Nick. He couldn’t remember ever being this turned on by a kiss but all he knew was that he didn’t want it to stop. He wanted to do something with his hands, because he felt stupid having them hang by his sides while Greg’s were somewhere under his shirt. So he did the only thing he could think of; he brought his hands up to thread them in Greg’s hair. It was obviously the right move though as Greg moaned softly and gripped harder to Nick’s waist.

Nick was starting to feel light headed and he figured it was because he hadn’t taken a breath in a good couple of minutes, but he was beyond the point of caring. Greg seemed to be more in control though as he slowly pulled himself away from Nick’s lips--placing placating pecks as he did so; partly to ease the way out of the kiss and partly because he wasn’t quite ready to let it end.

They stood panting; Greg’s hands still under Nick’s shirt and Nick’s hands still tangled within Greg’s hair. They rested their foreheads together with their eyes still closed both riding the sensation of what they had just experienced. Greg broke the moment by chuckling lightly, “What?” Nick whispered licking his own lips.

Greg shook his head against Nick’s forehead, “You weren’t lying when you said you didn’t know you liked guys until yesterday were you?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Nick asked defensively.

“No disrespect man seriously. If I didn’t fear asphyxiation I would devour your lips again right now.” Greg chuckled, “But you’re acting like a blushing virgin. It took you forever to do something with your hands. Again once you get started you’re a tiger, but you seem hesitant. It’s just like a girl, man. Well at least this part is. If we go any further we may need to have a discussion, but not now.”

“Sorry. New feelings. Got me a little wonky.” Nick sighed.

            “No apology required.” Greg smiled.

“Thanks. And about the other stuff? I don’t know if I’m ready for that.”

“Completely understandable. And either way I don’t think it would be the best idea right now. One, because I’d rather not do that and then that’s all I can think about when I REALLY need to be thinking about the mission and two, because I’m not that easy.” Greg cracked.

Nick laughed and pushed away from Greg with a smile, “Right you are. Well why don’t you go back to your music and I’ll go read my book and we’ll talk again once we land?”

“That’s a wonderful idea.” Greg smiled. Nick smiled back and sighed before turning to go back to his seat, “Oh and Nick?” Nick turned and couldn’t help but get de-ja-vu. It was suddenly three days ago and they were in the front room of the training compound and Greg was about to tell him to go fuck himself, “I love you.” Greg said softly.

And just the sheer fact that it WASN’T three days ago and those words were coming from Greg’s mouth and not the ones he had heard during their fight, made Nick break out into in biggest smile of his life. He sighed, “I love you too.” And with that he turned to go back to his seat as Greg slid his headphones back into his ears with a smile and slide back into his seat for the rest of the ride.
