Chapter 16

He felt it even before he woke up and for a minute or two he indulged in it before he made it known that he was awake. He thrust his hips up slightly and heard Greg giggle from beneath the sheets before popping his head out from under them and resting his chin on Nick’s chest, “Morning love.” He murmured kissing the centre of Nick’s chest.

Nick just hummed and ran a hand sleepily through Greg’s tussled hair. He loved to look at Greg in the morning before he had a chance to shower and do his hair. He looked so…natural. Nick also loved that he was the only person who got to see Greg like that, everyone else saw Greg made up.

“Do you wish me to continue what I was doing?” Greg asked innocently walking his fingers down Nick’s stomach teasingly.

Nick’s stomach muscles rippled as the wandering fingers continued their journey and he smirked with a stretch as if considering saying no, “I would love that.” He whispered, again running his hands through Greg’s hair. At Greg’s hum and lean into his touch Nick could tell Greg also enjoyed the reaction his pre gelled hair received.

Greg dipped his head under the sheets again and Nick felt soft open mouth kisses down the trail Greg’s fingers had just taken until Nick was once again thrusting up lightly. Nick’s head was fuzzy, with either sleep or endorphins, and therefore he wasn’t thinking clearly…so therefore when their bedroom door flew open it took both Nick and Greg by surprise.

Nick’s eyes went wide as he felt Greg roll off of him. He quickly rolled onto his stomach to hide the obvious tent the thin sheet was making just in time to feel the foot of the bed dip and a small figure to scramble in between them.

“Morning!” Charlie said happily, snuggling back into the pillows.

Greg chuckled, both from nervousness and Nick’s attempt to look like he was sleeping, sliding up to sit against the headboard, “Morning Charlie! It’s great to see you bud but we really have to teach you to knock.” He said cheerily hugging Charlie around the shoulders.

Nick let out a grunt of laughter, thinking Greg couldn’t be more right, “I want breakfast.” Charlie said decidedly.

“Okay Charlie man we’ll go grab some Fruit Loops.” Greg smiled lifting Charlie up and placing him on the ground next to the bed. Greg stood up and smoothed his covers down, smirking at Nick, “You okay babe?” He asked.

Nick just nodded with a hint of a smile, “We’ll finish our…conversation later.” He finished.

“What were you talking about?” Charlie asked as he and Greg walked from the room.

“Ummm monkeys Charlie. Monkeys.” Greg answered for lack of anything else to say.

“Like Boots from Dora!” Charlie exclaimed.

“I thought we said you weren’t allowed to watch Dora?” Greg chuckled. He and Nick had a fundamental problem with the Spanish/English speaking cartoon.

Nick sighed as he heard the banter between his husband and son trail off. Just another day in the Sanders-Stokes household he thought…and while he would love uninterrupted morning blowjobs, the thought of another day with his family brought a smile to his face.

-- -- --

“Angelica can we please keep the spaghettios on the tray please? For me?” Greg asked as he sat next to Angelica’s high chair attempting to feed her lunch.

Angelica answered back. Her speech babbled but with the cadence of actual speech, “Why can’t she talk?” Aidan asked spooning spaghettios in his own mouth.

“She can. She’s imitating the way we talk but she hasn’t learned all the words. It’ll come.” Nick commented, taking a bite of his own sandwich.

“I’m done.” Charlie stated wiping his face with the back of his sleeve. Nick cringed as tomato sauce was smeared onto the clean shirt Charlie was supposed to wear to a play date.

“Well that’s good Char but remember; we use a napkin, not our sleeve.” Nick said standing up behind Charlie and wiping the rest of the sauce off his face, “Now come on, we have to change you’re shirt before Anthony’s mom comes to pick you up.” Nick said holding out his hand as Charlie hopped off his chair and slid his hand inside the larger one to follow Nick from the room.

“Can Nitro have spaghettios?” Aidan asked looked down at the puppy who was no longer puppy size sitting next to his chair.

“Definitely not.” Greg said decidedly, “He shouldn’t beg either. Nitro go on.” Greg said snapping his finger and pointing out of the kitchen. Nitro looked at Greg with a cocked head before Greg gave him an expected looked, snapped his fingers again and the husky trotted indignantly from the room.

The doorbell rang and the members of the family currently occupying the kitchen heard a scramble in the hallway and Greg could picture Nick attempting to put the finishing touches on Charlie’s ensemble as Charlie attempted to get outside as quickly as possible. The scuffle ended with a rushed goodbye from Charlie yelled into the house and then Nick appearing in the kitchen doorway with a sigh, “He ALMOST went out shirtless.” Nick laughed, patting Aidan on the back as he walked by on his way to do some homework.

“I wouldn’t put it past him.” Greg shrugged picking up Charlie and Angelica’s bowls and putting them in the sink.

“You know what I miss?” Nick asked absently brushing a strand of Angelica’s wavy brown hair out of her face as he took a seat at the table to finish his sandwich.

“What’s that?” Greg asked not turning away from the sink.

“When Charlie couldn’t walk.” He cracked up at his joke more then he thought he would.

Greg laughed before leaning on the sink and looking out the kitchen window, “Do you know what I miss?” He asked and heard Nick hum behind him, “A baby’s cry filling the house.”

Nick quirked an eyebrow, “Just wait till Angelica’s hungry again, or she’s tired.”

Greg sighed, “That’s not what I mean. I mean a newborn’s cry. I miss everything about a newborn. The way they naturally smell like baby powder and not the baby powder you put in their diaper. The way they take in the world around them and that shapes who they’re going to be.” He shrugged, “I just miss it.”

Nick’s eyebrows furrowed, “What are you getting at G?”

Greg again shrugged and turned to lean against the sink looking at Nick, “Do you ever, I don’t know, think about having another kid?” He asked softly.

Nick chuckled and missed the hurt look cross Greg’s eyes, “You’re joking right? You have to be joking.”

“What if I’m not?” Greg asked defensively suddenly getting angry.

Nick stopped laughing, “Come on Greg we both decided that Angelica would be our last. We had conversation after conversation after she was born.”

“I know. But that was then. This is now.” Greg reasoned.

“And you’ve all of a sudden decided that we’re financially and emotionally fit to go from three kids to four kids?” Nick asked in disbelief.

Greg let out a groan of frustration, “I’m not talking about the financial side of it. I just think it would be nice to have a new born around. Is it so wrong to raise another child with the man you love?”

“Well that’s a great little idea Greg but unfortunately you HAVE to think about the financial and the emotional. It’s not like buying a DVD player, it’s a baby.”

Greg scoffed, “To think we would actually be able to have an adult conversation about this.” He said picking Angelica up from her highchair and handing her a sippy cup, “Forget I even brought it up.” He said walking from the room and down the hall, leaving Nick to sigh and put his forehead on the top of the table.

-- -- --

Nick pushed open Aidan’s bedroom door some time later and leaned against the door jam, to find the third grader writing frantically in his creative writing journal, “I hope you’re actually thinking about what you’re writing and not just making things up to get it done.” He commented startling Aidan slightly.

“I’m not making it up.” Aidan said quickly and Nick chuckled, knowing it was probably the truth despite what the circumstances may dictate.

Nick sighed and looked around Aidan’s bedroom contemplatively, “What’s wrong Dad?” Aidan asked concerned and Nick smiled.

“Nothing buddy. Just have a lot on my mind. Nothing for you to worry about.” Aidan nodded still unsure but Nick threw him a warm smile, “Why don’t you finish that and then we can go rent that movie you wanted.” He suggested and Aidan beamed quickly turning back to his book and starting to write again. Nick closed the door loosely and sighed once again to himself before going in search of Greg.

He found him in Angelica’s bedroom, sitting in the rocking chair with Angelica leaning against his chest. Greg was slowly rocking the chair and stroking Angelica’s hand, who looked like she was drifting off to sleep just in time for her nap, “I have no doubt you’d make an excellent father a fourth time around.”

Greg glanced up from looking at Angelica, but just eyed Nick skeptically, remaining silent, “And I have no doubt that IF we were to have another child that we would love it just as much as we love Aidan, Charlie and Angelica. I just think there are so many more factors that we can no longer prepare for.” Nick continued.

Greg remained silent for a long while just watching Angelica’s chest rise and fall, “It was a stupid suggestion anyway.” He said sadly.

“Hey.” Nick whispered moving further into the room to kneel in front of Greg, “It WASN’T a stupid suggestion. In a perfect world I would like to think that we would have many more kids then three. We just CAN’T.” He sighed.

Greg nodded and leaned down to breath in the scent Angelica’s hair softly, “I’m just…going to miss having a newborn around.”

“And so will I. And this probably won’t be the last time we have this conversation.” Nick said truthfully, “But think about all the other things we still have to go through. We’re getting to old to be the parents of newborns. But the parent’s of toddlers, or teenagers or young adults? We’re going to kick butt at that.” He chuckled and Greg smiled sheepishly at the thought.

Ohhh, almost caught in the act! I loved Charlie just zooming in and getting their undivided attention. Poor Nicky, hopefully Greg will finish their "conversation" soon.

You did a great job showing us Greg's love of babies, although when Aidan begins to drive, he might be glad that they only have three. It would be fun if you showed us how the entire family went through the process of gaining a new member-maybe another little girl??

Again, I just love this family and how real they seem. And the fact that in my imagination, they are all incredibly beautiful is a plus. :) Thanks!!
