Three’s A Crowd
Chapter 1
“Sara.”
Sara rolled her eyes in response to the voice behind her. Shit. What now? Couldn’t she just finish her work and go home already? She turned around. Oh, it was Nick. Well, that changed things.
“Hey, Nick. What’s up?” she said.
“Me and Greg are going for a few drinks once he’s done with his meeting with Grissom. Care to join us?” He asked. Anytime he and Greg went for drinks, they never neglected to ask Sara to join them. Not only did they know that she really enjoyed it, but she always offered to buy their seconds and thirds, just as long she wasn’t drinking alone. They also liked how it was the only time she ever seemed to really enjoy herself.
“Not today. I’ve got a lot to finish up. Maybe some other time.” she said. As if she needed to get drunk right now. She had just spoken with Grissom, in an attempt to ask him to hang out after work, but all he brought up was her “problem”, as usual. He could be such an asshole at times but still...she liked him.
“Okay.” Nick said. He wore an expression of disappointment but she knew it was only because he hated having to pay for his drinks himself. And yet, she couldn’t help smiling to herself as he walked away.
Nick walked in to the locker room. Greg was just finishing up pulling one of his oddly colored T-shirts and Nick couldn’t help but look. Greg always looked good in his T-shirts.
“She coming?” Greg asked.
“No.”
They exchanged a look. They knew she was probably angry at Grissom since anytime she rejected a good drink was right after he discussed the subject with her. They also knew that she was slowly catching on to their new relationship and that the whole ordeal would only continue to cause tension between the three of them.
“Well, I guess we’ll just have to go alone.” Greg said.
“I don’t know...” Nick said reluctantly. Sara was a good friend of his, despite her tendency to act antagonistic towards him and everyone else, and he hated knowing that she would be spending yet another Friday night alone in her apartment dwelling on her relationship problems.
“Dude, I’ll pay. Come on. It’ll be fun.” Greg urged with a hopeful look.
Nick couldn’t resist.
She always thought Grissom was a lot like herself. He was a workaholic, not very social, and regarded as odd. She didn’t understand why he couldn’t see that they would be perfect for each other. But...she sometimes questioned her feelings for him. Did she only like him because of their similarities? This questioned was aroused anytime she was with Nick and Greg. She had so much fun with them. And she liked both of them in more ways than one. Except, it was hard for her to tell exactly which one of them it was she really wanted to be with. Nick was always there for her despite her acting like a total bitch towards him anytime she tried to hide the fact that she really enjoyed his company. He always tried to cheer her up with some sort of weird joke or story about his humorous childhood. And then there was Greg. His youthful exuberance and constant flirtatious exchanges with her in the workplace always put a smile on her face...when no one was looking of course. And he was just so cute. She always had this urge to just lick his face whenever he gave her one of those little smiles after generating some information on DNA...
Maybe she would join them tonight. She hadn’t really had that much fun since their last hangout, when Greg passed his final proficiency test.
“Okay, I’m all ready.” Greg finally said.
“Finally.” Nick said. Greg always brought his entire CD collection to work with him and every day, before he left, he felt the need to check that each CD was present. Another one of his quirks that annoyed Nick, yet made him laugh even more. A knock was heard on the door.
“Hey guys...Um, is it too late to join you?”
Sara stood there with a melancholy smile on her face. Nick was relieved.
“Sure.” Greg said happily. It was strange. As much as Nick made him happy, he couldn’t ignore the strange feeling Sara evoked from him. She was always so serious and grumpy at the workplace and he loved playing around with her because he knew she appreciated it deep down. He was always eager to spend time with her outside the workplace as well. After a few drinks and playful conversations, she usually let her guard down and became a totally different person. The thing was, it was hard for him to decide which side of her he enjoyed more. Her presence just made him genuinely happy.
“Okay then. I’ll go pack my stuff up and meet you outside.” She said cooly.
The boys smiled. “Grissom who?” she thought suddenly as she turned and left the locker room. She wanted to enjoy this night. She wanted to make it special. And most importantly, she wanted to sort out everything going on between the three of them.
She wanted to make this night memorable.
