Disclaimer: Only wishing I could own them.
Summary: While waiting for Greg, Nick watches the people around him.
It was a gorgeous day in the park. Nick liked days like this, because he could pretend that nothing bad ever happened to anyone.
That was exactly what he was thinking as he sat on a park bench, waiting for Greg to return from wherever he’d taken off to.
As he waited, he observed the people around him and found himself playing a game he always refused to play with Greg when the younger man was bored in a crowd of people: he gave the people he saw pasts.
The man tossing the Frisbee for his German Shepherd had just met the woman of his dreams and was trying to decide when would be the right time to propose.
The young couple jogging past met in high school, fell madly in love and got married right after graduation. He was going to college to be a lawyer; she, a teacher. Their anniversary was coming up and while he thought he’d have her beat with tickets to the British Isles – she’d always wanted to go – she had the better present: she was pregnant.
The young woman reading on a bench down the path from him had a crush on her best female friend, but couldn’t think of a way to break it to her friend (who was having issues in her own relationship) or her boyfriend (who was starting to consider getting serious).
Nick was so absorbed in his thoughts that he didn’t see Greg return until the younger man cleared his throat with a grin.
“You waitin’ for anyone?”
Nick mirrored the grin, finding himself wondering all over again how one facial expression could promise all sorts of things like Greg’s could. “Just waiting.”
Greg plopped down next to him, wiggling his fingers in Nick’s direction. “Just?”
Nick grabbed Greg’s fingers and kisses the tips. “Just waiting.” He paused to watch an elderly couple walk by. “I found myself playing that game you love to annoy me with…”
