They see each other in the mornings. Greg's just getting in and Nick's just getting up. A few hours, nothing much and not enough.
Greg crawls into bed, careful not to wake Nick.
He doesn't sleep right away; instead he stares out the window - Nick never remembers to shut the curtains anymore - and watches the sunrise. He's home earlier than usual, too many long nights in a row deserved an early nightw, or so Grissom told them. He just thinks they all looked exhausted. But now that he's home, he can't sleep.
He wants to wake Nick up; he wants them to spend time together, awake. None of this in-between shit that sometimes makes him feel lonely when he shouldn't be. He shifts and Nick rolls over, toward him.
"You're home early," Nick mumbles, struggling to sit up.
"Slow night." Greg slides down as Nick gives up on sitting.
"Mmmm." Nick says and Greg knows Nick's not really awake.
"Go back to sleep." He leans forward, kissing Nick.
Nick's arm slides around Greg's shoulders, pulling Greg on top of him. "You too."
Greg almost smiles. "Mmkay." He rests his head against Nick's shoulder, staring out the window.
Nick is asleep again, quickly and Greg is alone again. The apartment is quiet and Greg remembers when they talked about getting a house. But then the shifts changed and everything's different. He's always tired, working in the field.
But, he thinks, at least he has Nick.
And that, he knows, is the most important thing. He watches the sunlight stream into the room and then closes his eyes. A few hours of sleep before Nick's alarm goes off, then he'll eat something and go back to bed, to start all over again.
