When Warrick had asked him what it was like, Nick had been surprised.
"Working under Cath?" He'd asked, slightly confused.
"No." Warrick had smiled slightly. "Not working with Greg."
Without really thinking, he'd answered. "It sucks."
Warrick had reached out and grabbed Nick's shoulder, reassuringly. Nick had jerked away and Warrick laughed.
"It's okay, man." He'd said and Nick hadn't been able to look at him for an hour.
Then it all passed because the next dead body was a girl involved in a hit and run and they both needed someone to talk to.
It was only later, after they'd found the parents, solved the case -- too easy and too sad -- that Warrick brought it up. Nick had tried to change the subject but Warrick wouldn't let go and by the time they went home after shift, Nick felt better.
Until he walked into his apartment -- their apartment, he still forgets that. Not because he doesn't remember that Greg moved in, but because it's so new. He walked in and there was Greg, sprawled in front of the TV fast asleep. Shift in forty-five minutes and Nick knew there was no way Greg was going to make it.
He shut off the TV and dialed Grissom. Sick day, he'd said. Greg was sick. First time in three months, he added as an afterthought. He'd stopped caring what Grissom thought every time they called in for each other.
Greg shifted on the couch and Nick slide down next to him, he could feel Greg move closer. Shifting and then waking. His eyes slide open and he glanced at Nick, a sleepy smile and then he sat up.
"Fuck."
"You're sick."
"I'm going to be late." He struggled to his feet.
Nick grabbed his arm, "No, man. You're sick."
Greg blinked, "I'm not, I'm -- oh." He slowly sat back down, shifting back next to Nick.
"When was the last time you slept in the bed?"
"When was the last time you were here?" Greg answered quietly.
Neither of them said anything. Nick reached out and ran his fingers through Greg's hair, making it stick up higher.
"Sorry, man."
Greg turned, "No, it's. I'm sorry. Yesterday sucked."
"I heard." He stifled a yawn.
"It never gets easier." Greg wrapped his arms around himself.
"You'll pass."
Greg didn't answer and Nick slid forward, wrapping his arms around Greg.
"I promise."

Oh, that just breaks my heart--Greg answering with that question just says so much.
Love this--thanks for sharing it with us.
