I’d like to dedicate all of the “they” sayings to Beth, though it’s unlikely that she’ll ever read this as she’s not on lj, but those sayings always remind me of her. As always, constructive criticism is welcome and I love love love comments. You guys are what keeps this story going.

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Chapter 3

Greg walked down the hallway towards the main entrance with his head held high. He looked calm and confident, but on the inside he was freaking out. He had no idea what to say to his brother, or what his brother was going to say to him. He just knew it was bad. His brother hadn’t said anything good to him in more years than he could remember.

“Hey, do you know where they sent the man that came in looking for me?” Greg asked the secretary at the front desk.

“I believe he’s waiting for you outside,” she said with a sad look. Greg hated pity and he really wasn’t in the mood for it from a secretary whose name he couldn’t even remember. He nodded and walked away before she could say anything to match the look on her face.

When he got outside he found Neil sitting on a bench just outside the doors. “Okay, what is it, Neil,” Greg asked, sounding defeated.

“Well here you finally are, took you long enough. Don’t you care about your family at all?” Neil said, his voice full of anger.

“What family.” Greg replied darkly.

“Your parents that gave you life and me, the brother that always looked out for you and protected you!” Neil shouted.

“Oh, you mean the parents that kicked me out when I was still in high school because they think that my being gay was a personal kick to them. Oh and then there’s you, my protective older brother that had his friends kick the shit out of me to the point where I can’t remember a few days. Oh yeah, I care so much about all of you!” Greg practically screamed.

“You selfish little brat, we were trying to help you.” Neil said, his voice dangerously low.

“Oh yeah, some help.” Greg said breathing heavily. He was seriously going to lose it, and soon.

“We were trying to knock some sense into you! C’mon man! Why would you choose to be that way other than to try to piss off Mom and Dad?”

“You think I chose this?” Greg had never heard anything so stupid in his life. “This is who I am Neil, who I’ve always been. I’m sorry if you can’t accept that.”

“No, I can’t accept that, and neither can Mom and Dad. That’s why I’m here. It’s Mom, she tried to kill herself. The note she left said that it was because of you. She just can’t handle your… preference.”

Greg felt his world waver as he tried desperately not to pass out. He sat down on the bench next to Neil and put his head in his hands. “Look Neil, it’s not that I don’t care, but I’m tired of feeling responsible for something I can’t control. There’s nothing I can do about this.”

“You could go and see them, tell Mom that you’re not a fag. Then prove it, get yourself a girlfriend. Do something!”

Greg turned and looked at his brother like he was a complete idiot. “I can’t do that and I won’t. I’m sorry that this hurts Mother, but she made it clear long ago that I’m no son of hers. I refuse to lie for the benefit of someone that doesn’t even like me. I refuse to lie for anyone.” With that, Greg stood and started to walk away. That’s when he heard it, that clicking noise that sounded familiar.

“Keep walking and I’ll shoot.”

Nick followed behind Greg at a safe distance. He still felt bad about sneaking around behind him, but Nick had a bad feeling about the whole situation. Part of him was telling him that Greg was a grown man and could take care of himself, but a larger part of him was yelling that something was wrong, really wrong. Nick stopped and watched as Greg talked to the secretary and then headed out the front door. He didn’t know what to do at first; he didn’t want it to be obvious that he was following Greg. He figured he’d wait a bit and then head out, like he was leaving anyways. His shift had been over for hours, he had just been putting in overtime finishing up a case anyways. This plan was immediately thrown out the window the second the yelling started.

Nick walked quickly, not wanting to alarm anyone. So far it was only an argument and he silently prayed that it would remain that way. When he heard the loud bang, he knew no one was listening to his prayers and he broke into a run as he pulled out his gun.

Nick stopped dead when he got outside. Greg was cowering on the ground, arms above his head in a defensive manner. Neil was standing behind him, the gun he was holding pointed to the sky.

Nick pointed his gun at Neil, “Drop it!” he yelled.

Neil ignored Nick as he slowly lowered his gun to point at Greg. “I told you not to move!” Neil screamed.

“I said drop your gun!” though he remained calm on the outside, Nick was freaking out on the inside. He always did in situations like this. Images of Amy Henler and Nigel Crane flashed through Nick’s mind.

Suddenly, Neil turned to Nick calmly. “Drop yours or I shoot him.” Nick’s face paled, this was worse than having the gun pointed at himself.

Nick thought back to all his training both as a cop and as a CSI, and for the life of him couldn’t think of anything to help in this situation. It wasn’t until he heard the click of Neil cocking his gun that Nick moved to action. “Okay man, just calm down. I’m putting my gun down.” Nick said lowering his fire arm and bending down to put it down. He didn’t take his eyes off of Neil the entire time.

“Much better,” Neil said and then turned back to Greg. “Get up fag, I’m not done with you.” Greg slowly stood and turned towards his brother.

“C’mon man, this isn’t the way to deal with this.” Nick said in his typical negotiation voice.

“Oh yeah? And why’s that?” Neil asked, never taking his eyes off Greg.

“Think of where you are man, there are cops all over this place.”

This statement made Neil hesitate just a bit, but it was enough for Nick. In one fluid move he scooped up his gun and stood directly between Neil and Greg, pointing his gun once more at Neil.

Neil laughed, “Oh, I see how it is. Protecting your boyfriend are you? Well, no matter, I’ll just shoot you both. Kill two birds with one stone, as they say.”

“I don’t think so bud,” came the voice of Jim Brass. He came walking up slowly pointing his gun at Neil.

Neil looked between Nick and the detective, defeat and anger etched on his face as he lowered his gun and dropped it to the ground. Nick let out an audible sigh of relief as Brass cuffed Greg’s older brother and escorted him to a nearby squad car.

“Are you okay man?” Nick asked Greg as he turned to the other man. Greg just stood there, so pale he looked grey. When he started to sway, Nick grabbed him around the waist and walked him to the bench. “Oh shit G, let me get you some water or something.” Nick’s voice was full of concern.

“No, no, I’m fine.” Greg’s voice was flat and there was still no colour in his face.

“No you’re not fine,” Nick replied. He still had his arm around Greg’s waist just to keep him sitting up-right. “You’re in shock.”
Just then, Brass walked back out of the building. “Hey guys, sorry about this, but I’m going to have to question both of you about what happened here tonight.”

“Can you give us a minute Brass? I don’t think Greg’s doing so well.” Nick said.

“No, no. I’m fine, I swear. I just want to get this over with.” Greg said, sounding just a little desperate.

After a few minutes of questioning, the story had been told and Brass left for the station where Neil was being booked.

After a few minutes, Nick finally broke the silence, “I’m gonna drive you home G, you’re in no condition to get behind the wheel.”

Greg nodded feebly and let Nick help him up. They walked slowly to the car where Nick helped him in to the passenger’s side before walking around to the driver’s side and getting in. The ride to Greg’s place was quiet. Nick wanted to say something, anything reassuring, but nothing came to mind.

They arrived at Greg’s apartment and Nick helped Greg up the stairs to his door. Greg reached for his keys, his hands noticeably shaking. He tried a few time to get the key in the lock before he dropped them. Nick bent down and got them for him. “Here G, let me help you,” He said as he unlocked the door for Greg.

He helped Greg into his apartment, closing the door behind them and sitting Greg down on the couch. It was then that Nick noticed that Greg was silently crying. The sight broke Nick’s heart. “Oh hey man, it’s okay.” Nick said, brushing the tears from Greg’s face.

Greg closed his eyes and leaned into Nick’s hand. “Don’t leave me.” He whispered.

Nick wrapped his arms around the other man and held him tight, “Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere.” He whispered back.

The end of that was sweet and I just have to thank you because it got my mind stirring and I actually managed to write something last night. It just hurt me to imagine a sibling reacting that way to his brother being gay.
