Nick yawned as he walked down the hallway towards the locker room. He still wasn’t used to the swing shift and it made him feel tired all the time. Thankfully it was the end of his shift and he had the next night off. Nick was about to walk into the locker room when he heard some yelling coming from the main lobby. Quickly becoming concerned, Nick altered his course and headed towards the main lobby.
“I’m sorry sir, but you’ll have to wait.” Nick heard the secretary say as he rounded the corner.
“I don’t have to wait for anything, I’m here to see my brother and nothing is going to stop me.” The man yelling was about the same height as Nick with a slim build and neatly cut dark blonde hair.
“Can I help you sir?” Nick said, his accent was thicker than normal, something that typically happened when he was trying to stay calm or hold back. He hated rude people.
“I don’t know, can you?” The man turned on Nick with a glare. Nick just raised his eyebrow and stared back. Finally the man said, “I need to see Greg Sanders.”
“Okay,” Nick replied, he suddenly had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. “I’ll get him for you, if I could just get your name?”
“Neil, Neil Sanders, I’m Greg’s brother.” Nick suppressed the shock he felt at the information he just received.
Nick nodded and turned back towards the break room. Nick figured that Greg would be there getting a coffee as he knew that he wasn’t on a case at the moment. As he walked he couldn’t help but be curious about Greg’s brother. ‘How could someone as great as Greg be related to someone like that?’ Nick thought to himself as he entered the break room.
***
Nick could hear Greg’s brother yelling from the break room where he had stayed after Greg had left. He could barely contain himself as he heard the hateful words coming out of Neil’s mouth. Nick had the overwhelming urge to run back out there and protect Greg by any means necessary, but his logical mind told him that that wasn’t a good idea. Instead he just stood there with his hands balled up in fists, breathing slowly through his nose in a vain attempt at calming himself down.
“What’s going on, man?” Nick looked up to see Warrick standing in the doorway looking concerned.
“I’m not entirely sure, except that I think I may have just met the biggest asshole in the world,” Nick replied darkly. Just then Nick saw Grissom walk by in the direction of the disturbance. Nick couldn’t hold back anymore. He rushed out of the room following Grissom without giving Warrick a second glance.
Nick rounded the corner, only to see Greg walking directly towards him. Nick started to say something, but Greg brushed by him like he didn’t even notice he was there. He turned to follow him, but felt a hand on his shoulder and turned back to see that it was Grissom.
“Let him go, Nick.” Grissom said, giving him ‘The Grissom Look.’
“But I…” Nick began, but Grissom only shook his head.
“Give him some time, Nick. After what just happened, I would think he’d need a little time to get himself together.”
Nick nodded in defeat, “I’ll give him some time, but I’m going to check on him in a half an hour. He shouldn’t be left alone for too long.”
“Alright Nick.” Grissom said with a knowing look.
***
Nick thanked god that it wasn’t a busy night. He spent the next half hour pacing the break room. He had only been there a few minutes when Sara came in.
“Hey Nick, you okay?” She asked, her voice low with concern.
“Fine,” he replied unconvincingly.
Sara raised her eyebrow in a very Grissom like manner. “I heard what happened with Greg….”
“Yeah, so? What’s your point?” Nick snapped and turned away from her. He immediately regretted his harsh words, but before he had a chance to apologize she had moved to stand in front of him.
“I feel like an idiot,” She said, shaking her head. Nick gave her a confused look. “I can’t believe I didn’t notice it before, considering I spend my life observing people. I mean, my god, how stupid could I be?”
“What do you mean?” Nick’s voice was low and he couldn’t look her in the eyes.
Sara smiled, “You know what I mean Nick. How long? How long have you um, cared about Greg?” Nick just looked at her, at a loss for words. “It’s ok Nick, I won’t tell anyone… but you might want to tell Greg.” And with that, she left the room.
Nick sat down and put his head in his hands. I hope she doesn’t say anything. Not only am I not ready for Greg to know, the last thing Greg needs right now is to have to worry about colleagues with crushes. Nick sighed. He waited for a few more minutes.
“That’s it, I’ve had it,” he mumbled to himself as he got up and left the break room. He had no idea where Greg had gone, but he had to find him, had to make sure he was okay.
After a few minutes, Nick found Greg in one of the interrogation rooms sitting with his head in his hands. He appeared to be lost in thought. “Greg?” Nick said softly, afraid that he would startle him.
Greg slowly raised his head, as if in a daze, to look at Nick. “Hey Nick,” Greg said, sounding thoroughly depressed. It hurt Nick’s heart to hear that flat tone in Greg’s normally jubilant tone.
“Hey,” Nick replied as he took a seat next to Greg. He didn’t know what else to say.
They sat in silence for a few minutes and it took all of Nick’s will power not to reach out and just hold Greg. “I guess you heard all that,” Greg said, his voice still painfully flat to Nick’s ears.
“Yeah, I heard.”
“So, is this going to be some sort of pity party? Poor Greggo, the lab fag? Or are you just going to tell me about what a horrible sinful life I lead?” Greg said bitterly.
“No G, nothing like that. I’m just worried about you,” Nick said honestly. “Is there anything I can do to help?”
“I wish there was Nick, I really do, but this is something I have to deal with myself.” Greg said sounding defeated.
Nick reached out and put a hand on Greg’s shoulder, unable to not touch him any longer. “Okay, but if you ever need anything, just ask.” Nick could swear that he felt Greg lean in closer to his touch, but he wouldn’t allow himself the luxury of that thought right now.
Greg smiled, “I’ll remember that.” Greg got up then and moved towards the door. “Time to go ‘meet my maker’ as they say,” He had a weak version of his usual grin on his face.
“You sure you’re going to be okay G?” Nick’s voice was filled with worry.
Greg contemplated Nick’s words for a moment, “Yeah, I’ll be okay, thanks Nick.”
With that Greg continued out of the room. Nick remained seated for a few minutes before worry and curiosity got the better of him and he followed Greg down the hall. He felt bad at first, sneaking after Greg, but he would soon thank his lucky stars that he did just that.
