Jan. 26th, 2006 07:47 pmLate New Years fic. I haven't written Nick/Greg for about..two years (excluding Vainglorius which I felt obligated to finish) so I'm a little nervous. This was written for Chrismukkah/New Years ficlets for my flist, and I wrote one for basically every fandom I've ever written in, including this one.
With Every Year
summary: The years mark their relationship. Co-workers to friends to lovers to ex-lovers. (Btw, I hate the term lover, but only thing I could think of that fit.)
rating: g
1999 ; Pre Series
"So, you're the new kid on the playground?" Nick smiled at this kid who seemed hopelessly out of place, when it should be just the opposite. Crazy spiked hair, a weird t-shirt and jeans definitely made him stand out because he seemed to actually have a personality.
"That obvious, huh?" The guy smiled selfconsciously and Nick thought for a fleeting moment it was rather cute. Just for a moment, because he thought about his girlfriend waiting for him back home.
"I'm Greg," he says, and holds out his hand. Nick laughs and the guy -- Greg, blushes a little.
"I'm Nick. Graveyard." He shook Greg's hand.
"I'm swingshift DNA, but I've been working on getting a transfer."
"Cool," Nick says at a loss for anything else to say.
"Cool," Greg says back before looking at the clock. "Happy new year."
2000 ; Season One
"-- And then I was like, you have got to be kidding me! and then she was like, no! I'm totally serious! Then I was like --"
"I think somebody had a little too much of the eggnog," Nick says apologetically and smiles. "Come on, G, time to go home for you."
Greg pouted. "But I don't wanna! I'm not gonna get a new years kiss or nothing. The only reason I go to these things is..wait. What was I saying?" Greg burst out into druken giggles and Nick apologizes once again before steering Greg off towards the door. Greg continued to struggle against Nick. "I swear to drunk I'm not god! Ha ha! Get it Nicky? Swear to drunk, instead of god? Ha ha, I'm amazing."
Nick agreed with him and Greg stopped trying to go back to the party.
"Nick, look! It's two minutes til midnight. I need somebody to kiss. Nobody kissed me last year."
"I know G," Nick replied as he shook his head. "I was there."
"I got it!" Greg started to giggle and Nick swore to himself he would not let Greg anywhere near the eggnog or the punch next year. "Why don't you, kiss me?" Greg puckered his lips and started making kissing noises before bursting into another fit of giggles.
Nick rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, whatever Greg. Let's just get you home."
2001 ; Season Two
"Greg, since when did you ever think it was a good idea to throw a New Years eve party? Remember what happened last year?"
Greg grimaced as he finished hanging up a HAPPY NEW YEARS banner on the wall. "It was Lizzie's idea."
"Lizzie? You've been holding out on me man! You have a girlfriend?"
Greg's ears turned red. "Yeah. I mean, it's nothing serious or anything..but she's cool."
The doorbell rang. Greg went over to the door and opened it. "Speak of the devil," he said before kissing this Lizzie.
"Hi. Lizzie," she said and outstretched her hand.
"Nick." He said and tried to hide his disappointment.
2002 ; Season Three
"This is the first year since you started that we haven't gone to a party," Nick murmured as he sat down beside Greg on his, no..their couch. Greg shrugged and smiled.
"This year, I wanted it to be just us. To kind of celebrate, you know?" Greg flipped on the TV and snuggled against Nick. "Be careful. I could get used to this."
Nick looked at him in mock-shock. "You? The party animal?" He laughed as Greg turned red around his ears again.
"Shut up!" Greg raised his head off of Nick's chest and looked at him. "Happy new year."
"A little early, isn't it?"
"Shut up and kiss me."
"Okay."
2003 ; Season Four
For the first time in four years, they hadn't gone to a party together. It was weird. He went with Warrick and his friends to some party and felt hopelessly out of place. He wondered if he stuck out as much as Greg had that first office party. Warrick knew he had just broken up with someone and was pretty torn up about it (didn't know who he had broken up with) and his solution was to get really, really hammered. Nick agreed and was glad the place that they went to was serving more than just champagne. He needed something harder and besides, he had never been much for the taste of champagne anyways.
2004 ; Season Five
"Hey man, didn't think you would show up."
"Hey," Greg said, trying not to look nervous.
"Come on, Mr.Hot Shot New CSI, you deserve this."
Greg looked at him as if he couldn't quite believe what he was saying.
"Look man, I am your friend. They are your friends -- " he gestured to a bunch of lab techs sitting around the table.
"No, they're not. They resent me."
Nick shook his head. "Whatever man. I just say you and me make the company party more interesting. It's always fun watching a drunk Catherine and Sara do their karoke act."
Greg looked somewhat skittish, and agreed that it would be fun to watch. However, as soon as Nick turned his back for a moment, he bolted.
2005 ; Season Six
"Thanks man, for helping with the cleanup.." Nick pointed around to his house that looked like a warzone had hit it. He had an early New Years party, on the 30th of December. A little unorthodox, but this way everybody could come. He didn't throw parties much anymore, but he would chalk this one up as a success.
"No problem. I mean, it's almost tradition for us to this nowadays so.."
"Yeah," Nick agreed softly. He thought Greg and him had gotten to the point where they were cool again, but then there were times like these when he wasn't quite sure if Greg was comfortable with him again or not.
"G, is there something on your mind? You're silent. You didn't spike your hair and you just haven't been acting like yourself lately."
Greg rolled his eyes. "Myself no longer has spiked hair. You should know that. I dunno. This is me, a more professional me I guess or something and there is nothing on my mind."
Nick held his hands up and turned away and whispered to himself, "My Greg had spiked hair."
That's when he heard Greg sigh. Nick turned around and shoved another beer bottle into the black garbage bag.
"Nick, you want to know what my problem is? How you can act all cool about...this and act like we can just go back to being best friends."
Nick stared for a moment. "Greg, it was hard for me. I would like to remind you that you were the one in fact who did the breaking up." Nick dropped the garbage bag and stared at Greg, challenging.
Greg walked forward until they were face to face. "Go. To. Hell." he whispered harshly. Nick didn't know what to say to that, but he wasn't going to back down. He leaned forward and kissed him.
"Happy new year," he muttered before spinning back on his heel and picking up the garbage bag, resuming his cleaning.
"Nick.."
"Yeah?" he asked as he tried to keep his voice as even as possible.
"You want to try again?"
"What?"
"2006 could be a very good year for us." Nick felt Greg's hand on his shoulder. He turned around and they were face to face again.
"Okay."
"Okay?" Greg asked in disbelief.
"Okay."

Date: 2006-01-27 08:34 pm (UTC)I found that so sexy how Greg demanded that.
That was brilliant, by the way. Different, and you did a very good job of it. Plus, it was easy to follow about the break-up and the making-up and things :)

Date: 2006-01-27 09:26 pm (UTC)I like doing 'different' as N/G fandom is huge. Most of the fandoms I play in are. So I write your run of the mill stories, but every once in awhile I feel like doing it in a different style.
Also, iconlove.
