Summary: Nick's feelings after Gum Drops.
Nick made it the front door before he broke down completely. He tried to stifle it, knew that Greg would come running if he knew, knew that this case had affected him to this extent. He moved to the couch by instinct, blinded by the tears in his eyes. He sat and held his head in his hands, letting the tears course down his cheeks, nearly biting through his lips. Shoulders shaking, he gripped his head, hearing poor little Cassie’s voice, that weak voice struggling to tell the story of one of the worst things that could happen in someone’s life. Such a strong little girl, to be able to stand it, stand losing her entire family that way, and survive through it all.
He didn’t jump when Greg’s hands moved on his shoulders. Still didn’t make any sounds besides his hitched breaths. But Greg’s hands felt warm. He’d felt so cold since hitting the water.
Finally he stopped, and collapsed against Greg, who wrapped his arms around Nick’s shoulders and let the other man lean on him.
“I just don’t get it, Greg,” Nick said, his voice hoarse, his accent thick. “How … how does someone that little take that kind of grief? That horror? How will she go on?”
Greg closed his eyes, fighting back his own tears, knowing that this was one of the ones that would haunt Nick. “I don’t know,” he said. His fingers moved restlessly over Nick’s shoulder, neck, hair, everything he could reach unobtrusively. “But she will. She’ll just take it one day at a time. That’s what the therapists told us, isn’t it?”
Nick moved until he and Greg were sitting closely. “Greg,” he said wearily. “We just lost our feeling of invincibility. That’s all. She lost her entire world. She can’t go back to her home, her family is all dead, and in that tiny town, everyone will know exactly what happened to her.”
“She’ll be sent to foster care,” Greg said. “She’ll remember her family with love every day of her life. But she’ll go on.” He leaned forward and kissed Nick gently on the cheek. “She’ll live her life, Nick, the same way you and I and everyone else does.”
Greg knew this wasn’t the end, that Nick would have nightmares about not being in time, about finding a cold body where the live one had been. Of finding four bodies instead of three on the bottom of the lake. Of not being enough to save little Cassie. But at least this time he can wake up with the comfort that he was enough this time.
And that would have to be enough.
