1. emotion--it can be sadness, happiness, anger, a combination--make
me FEEL something
2. an appearance by Bobby Dawson would be a big plus
3. happy ending

Sorry about the lateness of the fic, the fates have conspired against me. I can't post on Geekfiction either at the moment, so it'll have to rest here until I can, or some kind person posts for me. Hopefully I’ve done your terms justice, but if I haven’t, please don’t kill me…hot CSI men WILL avenge my death =D

“There’s nothing there, there never has been and there never will be.” Nick Stokes’ voice was noticably exasperated. “I don’t know what you thought you saw, but I wouldn’t go jumping to conclusions, because two and two is going to make five.”

A gunshot rang out.

“Sorry Nick, I just thought…well, I’ll get this bullet tested for you now.”

Bobby Dawson turned around and shook his head out of Nick’s sight. The whole lab knew that Greg liked Nick and that Nick liked Greg but that neither of them knew that they liked each other. In a final act of desperation Catherine had held a secret meeting to try and determine a plan of action for getting them together, in which it had been decided that someone would try directly asking Nick what he felt. Knowing how Nick reacted to personal questions, the lack of volunteers hadn’t been surprising. Unfortunately Catherine had prepared for this, and forced Bobby and Warrick to square off in a rock/paper/scissors contest. Bobby had lost, and spent the rest of the week worrying about how best to approach the subject. Clearly his blunt and honest approach hadn’t been the most successful decision he’d ever made. However he decided to try again.

“What you’ve got here is definitely the weapon that killed the vic. If you look,” Bobby gestured to the microscope, “you can see that they match perfectly. That’s definitely the revolver you’re after.”

Nick looked down the microscope and sighed. “I was afraid you were going to say that.”

“Why?”

“The owner of the gun didn’t fire it, we’ve tested him for gunshot residue. But he’s an agrophobic recluse, never goes out – never even lets visitors in. We couldn’t bring him in because he couldn’t physically leave the house. So we’ve no idea how the gun got from his house, shot the vic and then made its way back. The only piece of evidence we’ve got, apart from the gun is a fibre found at the scene. It’s with Greg now.”

“Listen, Nick, I know it’s probably just my overactive imagination, I like to imagine everyone’s gay. Makes my day that little bit happier. But I did notice a spark when you said his name.”

Nick scowled and started to leave the room. “I told you, there’s nothing there. Trust me.”

“Nothing there on your part, or his?”

Nick stopped and spun around. “I…this is nothing to do with…anything…” And with that, he left the room in a hurry, not looking back.”

Bobby smiled, he’d found out one crucial thing at least: Nick definitely liked Greg. He wasn’t saying so out loud, but he’d never been the best person for lying. The only problem was that something was getting in the way of Nick’s feelings for Greg, and Bobby couldn’t guess for the life of him what it was. He was sure it wasn’t acceptance, Nick kept his private and work life separate, and even so, Bobby himself was proof that a gay man could succeed in the CSI lab. He was equally sure that it wasn’t lack of effort on Greg’s part, the young lab tech could only have been more obvious if he danced in front of Nick naked wearing a sandwich board that said “I DIG YOU.” He also knew that if the mystery was to be solved anywhere, it was the CSI lab.

**********************************************

Catherine was glad she’d been paired with Nick on this case. Bobby Dawson had updated her on his attempts to get Nick to talk, so she knew that she had an angle to go on. She also knew that if being a mother had taught her anything, it was the ability to nag relentlessly. This sucker was going down, and hopefully he’d be taking Greg with him. Walking into the evidence room, she saw Nick cutting a square out of a large blanket.

“Whatcha got there Nicky?”

Nick looked up and smiled in welcome “Hey Cath. Blanket from the telephone maintenance man’s van. Records show that he visited our agrophobe’s home twice the week of the murder. Once just before, and the second for a check up, just after. Seemed too coincidental for my liking, so I went and checked it out.”

Although his tone was calm, Catherine noticed his hands were shaking and realised that the crime may have hit a little too close to home for Nick’s liking.

“Nick, are you seriously all right working this case?”

“Yeah…it’s just…don’t these people ever check out who they’re hiring? It could be anyone they’re sending out to people’s houses, a complete psychopath, and they don’t seem to care at all.”

“Nick, remember we see the worst of people here. Don’t judge it all by your own experiences. Anyway, this kind of thing makes you think, doesn’t it?”

“About what?”

Catherine was unsure if he would take the bait, but decided to go for it anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. “About how short and precious life is. You shouldn’t be focussing on the people and things you don’t trust; you should be out there making sure the people you trust and love know it. Maybe it’s time you did that. May I suggest you start with Greg?”

Nick rolled his eyes and turned his back on her. “You and Bobby Dawson are in this together! For the last and final time: THERE IS NOTHING THERE.”

“But you like him right?”

“Listen, I’m not going to re…”

“But you like him right?”

He held up his hands in defeat and turned round to face Catherine once more. “Fine. Yes, I like Greg. I’ve liked him for a while, but he doesn’t like me, and he’s made that perfectly clear.”

Catherine was perplexed. It was the lab’s worst kept secret that Greg was crazy about Nick. How on earth had they got their wires this badly crossed? “I don’t understand…Greg told you that he didn’t like you?”

Nick shook his head. “He didn’t need to. We went out drinking one night, and I finally drank up enough courage to try and kiss him. I leaned in, but he moved away and then left pretty near straight away. We’ve not talked about it since, but I think it’s pretty obvious that he doesn’t like me in that way.”

Without saying a word, Catherine sprinted out of the room and down to the lab. She was going to get to the bottom of this if it killed her.

**********************************************

Greg was in the middle of an air guitar solo when Catherine burst in looking for him. He looked at her, and knew he wasn’t going to get anymore guitaring time. She only had that look on her face when she was in the middle of a very confusing case and hunting for clues.

“Cath, I haven’t got to your fibres yet, but they’re next in my pile, I swear.”

“What? Oh, never mind them…did you really blast Nick when he tried to kiss you?”

“No! Well, yes. But it was for a good reason. We’d both been drinking all night, and when Nick leaned in, I could smell the alcohol on his breath. I didn’t know whether he really wanted to kiss me, or whether it was the beer talking, so I moved away. I wanted our first kiss to be special, meaningful, not a drunken fumble he’d probably regret in the morning. I felt so bad that I left soon afterwards. He justs pretends it never happened, so I know he regrets it. He just doesn’t like me in that way, I’ll get over it.”

Catherine burst into laughter and shook her head. God knew she loved those boys, but sometimes they just needed their heads banging together. A new plan formed in her head, and she grabbed Greg’s hand.

“Hey! What about my work?”

“This’ll take five minutes.”

She led him out of the room, pausing at a door only to borrow Bobby Dawson. She stopped at the room where Nick was processing evidence and shoved Greg inside, shutting the door and holding it shut with Bobby’s assistance so that they were effectively trapped inside.

“Cath! Bobby! This isn’t funny, let us out!”

“Sh! We’re doing this to help you! Now Nicky, you like Greg, and Greg, you like Nick – isn’t that so?”

The two men turned and faced each other. Nick noticed Greg was a very peculiar shade of red, and judging by the heat in his cheeks he was too. He saw Greg nod his head and look at the floor. Reaching out, he tilted Greg’s head upwards again before nodding himself.

Outside the room, the two plotters were getting worried with the lack of noise inside the room. Deciding to take the reins once again, Catherine tried to move things on a little.

“Uh, Nick? Why don’t you invite Greg out for breakfast?”

Both men looked at the door and grinned. Nick raised his voice and answered.

“Cath, Bobby, I think we can take things from here. That means you can leave…now.”

There was no answer, but judging by the grudging footsteps, their conversation was no longer being listened into.

Greg and Nick faced each other once more and grinned at each other.

“So…” Nick started, “D’you fancy grabbing a bite…you know, after work I mean?”

“Um, sure.”

It wasn’t the most coherent or romantic start to a relationship, but that didn’t matter. They had time for coherency and romance later. For now they had each other.

I loved it! This line about killed me: He was equally sure that it wasn’t lack of effort on Greg’s part, the young lab tech could only have been more obvious if he danced in front of Nick naked wearing a sandwich board that said “I DIG YOU.” Thanks for writing this! You rock!

So true. I'll NEVER be able to watch anything again without seeing the slash potential. Never.

And you're welcome, it was deserved. ;)

And this story totally made my terrible day a lot better. I could just see that happening, Nick and Greg acting like a couple of kids and just not saying anything to each other... and then Bobby and Cath getting all nosy and making things happen. XD Great job!

:D

This story is so awesome! Humorous, fun, sweet... and with Catherine and Bobby's meddling to boot! Catherine running around, planning her attack and poor Bobby losing to Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Bobby's "I like to imagine" comment had me giggling (I've heard he's actually a canon gay character. Huh. I wonder if this is true? ...do I really have the energy to research it?) Awesome ending, too. Really brightened up my day! ^_^

Loved this! And Bobby is canon gay, they just cut the scene out where it was discussed. I heard he has a partner and they adopted a child. I love Bobby and he was so well used in this fic! Sometimes it just takes a little meddling!

I just loved this. Love how people get their wires crossed when love is involved. LOVE Cath organizing the office and FORCING Warrick and Bobby to R,P,S to see who got Nick. That's so totally Cath and they would never dream of disobeying her. Really clever and funny. :-)

I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it. Feedback rules. I love comments on mine. And yeh, if she said rock paper scissors to me, my fingers would be flying.
