Greg carefully removed the glass slide, set the new coin into the foam space, and stepped back to admire his work. He grinned.
Nick slid his arms around Greg from behind and pulled him into an embrace. “Sometimes I think you care more about your collection than me,” he softly laughed into Greg’s shoulder.
“Hey! I might trade these,” Greg gestured to the various cases, “but I could never give you up, Nick, and you know that.”
“That was corny.”
“You love it.”
“Yup. I bet you’d never give up that coin,” Nick said, pointing to an ancient gold coin sitting under a spotlight.
Greg tore himself from Nick’s arms and picked up the glass holder, turning it in the light so he could admire it from every angle.
“How could anyone sell this?! It’s so rare! Ancient Rome, somewhere around 420 A.D. Solid gold. There’s, like, two of these in existence?”
“You’re cute when you’re obsessive.”
Nick reached around Greg and plucked the case out of Greg’s hands – Greg protested, exclaiming, “Only I can touch it! I don’t want it chipped!” - and placed it back on the shelf.
“I take back the cute comment.”
Greg assumed his best you-can’t-hate-me-when-I-do-this look, and Nick relented, leaning into kiss Greg right on the lips. They collapsed onto the couch, Greg’s head resting on Nick’s stomach.
“I wish I could find that coin’s twin,” Greg sighed.
“It has a twin?”
“Yeah. Same shape, design, everything, except it’s made of silver. It’s rarer than the gold one. More expensive, too.”
Nick lazily stroked Greg’s hair. “Maybe you’ll see it tomorrow.”
“At the convention, you mean?”

Greg picked up the silver coin slowly and examined it closely. He held it up to the light, even knocked on it to see if it was fake. Convinced, he took the coin into the living room, staring intently at it the whole time. Nick pulled himself out of bed and followed.
He watched Greg daintily press the new addition into its spot. “Happy early birthday, Greg,” Nick said.
“My birthdays not for months, but I think I love you even more than I thought possible. Now tell me how you got it.”
Nick shook his head. “I can’t tell you that! It needs to stay secret, in case I get you more in the future!”
Greg’s eyes lit up. “I don’t know how I can repay you…”
