Nick Stokes was used to the big changes in life sneaking up on him when he least expected them, so the fact that this change didn't, that it came as naturally to him as breathing, was both as shocking and surprising as any other change in his life, and at the same time not!

He and Greg had always had a good rapport, always been friends, always been buddies. Of course, lately, their Playstation 2 marathons and game nights had been a much fewer and further between, what with Greg training to be a CSI and the night shift being split up and all. The splitting of the night shift had, in retrospect, played a big part in the Change. Capital C. Because it truly was just that - a capital C Change!

Warrick was nice and all, and yeah, he was one of Nick's closest friends, but hanging with him just wasn't the same. Nick's social life outside of work had dribbled down into practically nothing, because, honestly, it was much easier to just grab breakfast or lunch or dinner with Warrick and Catherine after or during or before a shift, because they were there and they knew his work schedule, and he didn't have to make half-assed "I think I'll be done around midnight"-dates with someone who would never truly get how flexible you needed to be when you worked as a CSI in the country's second best lab.

But Warrick and Catherine were boring. Most of the time it would be okay, and they'd talk and make light jokes and exchange theories about their current cases or talk about Lindsey or the respective lack of dates they had, but every now and then... every now and then, Nick found himself so fucking bored to death with the same old, same old, and he missed Greg.

Greg would spout off weird factoids about artificial sweetener and do a victory dance Nick thought he really should be far too old to do whenever he kicked Nick's ass in a video game. Greg would be talking seriously about the ethics of being a CSI and then suddenly joke about Marilyn Manson or some obscure grunge/punk band Nick had never heard of. Greg would bounce around to horrible music, giggle at horrible TV shows, and proudly show off his recently purchased t-shirts that not even Grissom tolerated at work, and Nick briefly wondered when Greg would wear all the t-shirts that were covered in penises and naked chicks and crude sayings, because they really didn't have that much free time.

They hadn't had a game night in just over two months, when they finally managed to squeeze in some time, Nick's shift running extra long, and Greg's shift not, and they bumped into each other in the locker room, and hadn't Nick taped that basketball game last week? Because Greg hadn't seen it yet.

So Greg followed Nick's car, they picked up a six-pack of beers, and then relaxed, watching the game and playing catch-up, and it was the best time Nick had had in just over two months.

Luck would have it that Las Vegas apparently decided to go nuts about a week later, and nuts in the good sense. Catherine only had two softball cases for Nick and Warrick, wham, bam, thank-you ma'am, and by the time Greg came to work, they had them both wrapped up and were catching up on their paperwork. Grissom almost looked like he was about to have a heart attack when he found out that the only cases he had for his team were also softballs, probably even softer than Nick and Warrick's, and he handed one for Greg, saying it was a good way to hone his skills. It truly was a soft one, because even Greg had it solved and wrapped up in record time - with some impeccably timed advice from Grissom, of course - and just as Nick were leaving, running late because he'd spent more time goofing off with Warrick than on the actual paperwork, Greg came into the locker room, confused as hell, because Grissom had sent him home.

There was only one case left, and Grissom was working it with Sara, and although Greg could have used the training and extra help *never* hurt, Greg whispered to Nick - once the younger man got over his initial shock over being sent home - that he just thought Grissom wanted to be alone with the brunette.

So they picked up another six-pack, and Greg had just gotten the new Playstation 2 (which he admitted was just the same, only smaller, and a gimmick to make more money, but he still had it), and he also had a brand new war game that Nick was dying to try out.

Nick killed Greg about 25 times and stayed for several hours longer than he should have, but he had a blast, and it didn't matter that he as yawning all the way through his shift the next day. Warrick winked at him and asked if he'd gotten laid, but he'd just shook his head and said that nah, video game night with Sanders, and Warrick had thrown his head back and laughed, and that was that.

Greg caught him when he came in to work that evening, demanding revenge, and only two days later they spent hours they should have spent sleeping, shooting each other dead in the virtual jungles of the game.

It became a regular routine for them, playing more games and spending more time at each others' places than they strictly should have, but for the first time since the night shift had been split up, Nick was truly enjoying life, and it didn't matter that he was tired at work sometimes, because he and Greg were rapidly moving from friends, buddies to best-buddies and that was fine with him! Sanders provided him with interesting company, but not tiring him out since they no longer worked together as well. After all, nobody, nobody wants to see them same person every single minute every single day of every single month. Nick saw just enough of Greg.

Into the fourth or fifth month - Nick wasn't quite sure - of this routine, and the eleventh video game or so - a hockey game - the Change happened, but unlike other Changes with capital C's, it kinda just snuck in there.

Greg was kicking Nick's ass, and while Nick might be better at shooting Greg dead, Greg was definitely better at this game, even though Nick had read the manual, read the cheats, knew which buttons to press to make what commands, while Greg was just pushing random buttons at random intervals. Greg won for the fourth time in a row, and Nick mock-groaned, throwing his hands up, then chuckled at Greg's victory dance, which he really should be too old for, and Greg plunked back onto the couch, laughing with Nick, and then they were kissing.

No big thing, came as natural to them as breathing, and a part of Nick's brain protested wildly, because this was definitely a capital C Change, and somehow they'd gone from cheering and laughing and "I'm so kicking your ass!" to moaning and making out and "Oh, God, yes, right there!" And the strangest thing was that Nick was so fine with it all, so fine with it.

He hadn't even realized he wanted it, it wasn't like he'd been pining over Greg before now, but kissing him just seemed so right, and natural and so damn good. And nevermind that he didn't have a clue what he was doing, because his sex life had been extremely poor at its best, and his gay sex life had been nonexistent - but even that thought didn't freak him out. So what if he didn't know what he was doing? Greg certainly knew what he was doing, and Greg knew what he was doing very well and nothing seemed strange or weird or scary at all, it just felt so good that Nick never wanted to do anything else ever again. It was new and it was different, yes, but it wasn't scary. Not at all, just a Change.

Then all reflection upon the matter went out the window, because Greg really knew what he was doing, and there were more kissing and moaning and slick-slick-slick and "Oh, fuck, fuck, fuck," and - bliss. Complete and utter bliss.

If the Change hadn't come so naturally to him, he might have freaked afterwards, but he didn't. It might have been awkward to clean themselves up, to say their goodbyes for the night, but it wasn't. Not at all!

They had cleaned themselves up with friendly banter going between them, joking about dry-cleaning and lighting up Greg's couch under their ALS lights, and then had, by some unspoken agreement, continued to cuddle and kiss, both instinctively knowing that the Change involved more than a quick buddyfuck. When Nick had left, he'd kissed Greg again, a quick peck, like if they had already been a couple of years before, and the next night, when Greg came into the lab, they both grinned at each other, knowingly, but not awkwardly.

And that was it. That was the big Change, with a capital C.

Nick continued to come to Greg's, and Greg continued to come to Nick's, and they'd watch games, and play video games, and fool around. Nick would tape basketball games, and Greg would suddenly strip and decide to do the dishes naked just because he felt like it. Sometimes Nick would criticize the mess in Greg's apartment, criticism which always fell on deaf ears and was met with a grin and a wink. Greg would show off new and scandalous t-shirts, and Nick would tell him tidbits he'd picked up from Animal Planet, and they'd kiss and fool around and have sex and joke and drink beer and diss each others' food habits.

Sometimes Nick would stay over at Greg's place, and sometimes Greg would stay over at Nick's place, and Greg was the first to say "I love you!" after sneaking up on Nick in his kitchen where he was making a sandwiches (roast beef for him, peanut butter for Greg, because as long as it was for Greg, Nick wouldn't mind stocking up his entire fridge with peanut butter). Greg had been wearing his lime green "Drink 'till I'm cute!" t-shirt, and he'd snuck up behind the Texan, tickled him and then laughed loudly at the most un-manly squeak and jump Nick had made. Then he said "I love you!" and Nick felt as if someone had lit a bonfire inside of him, warm and happy.

"I love you," Nick said back, and handed Greg his sandwich, not even grimacing when Greg took a huge bite and then pecked Nick on the lips, tasting like peanut butter.

The smile he wore when he came into work the next day was so big his jaw actually hurt, and Warrick winked at him and asked if he'd gotten laid. Nick just nodded a little, said "Something like that," and kept on smiling.

And Warrick threw his head back and laughed, and that was that.

Aw, lovely. Very smooth, the way they just eased into being together, so naturally. Very guy-like; not a lot of discussion, just letting it happen. And mmmm, cuddles. Can't go wrong there. *g*

That was so adorable, and Greg like, why can I so imagine Greg doing victory dancing after winning video games, and that progression, yeah, so natural. Wonderful job, hope to see more from you soon.
