THE NOTE Chapter 1
As the sun rose over the Las Vegas landscape, Greg was overwhelmed with emotion. It had been 7 hours since his lover, Nick Stokes, had been found after being buried alive. Greg's only focus at the time was on finding Nick. Now that the ordeal was over, his body was finally able to comprehend what had happened. "I almost lost the love of my life tonight, and no one would have ever known" Greg whispered in a dismayed tone of voice. He needed to sleep, but scary thoughts and dark emotions kept creeping back into his mind. A sleepless hour later, he gave up his attempt and headed over to the hospital.
Peering in through the window of Nick's room, Greg could see that his parents were still sitting, looking drained, next to their son. Nick was sleeping fitfully, “likely with the help of sleeping pills" Greg thought. He hesitated before entering, knowing that he couldn't behave how he really wanted to around the Stokes. Nick was still in the closet to his parents and to the rest of the CSI team. No one knew that they had been dating for over a year now. Perhaps Catherine intuitively knew, but no one said or even insinuated anything. They assumed Greg & Nick were good buddies, who enjoyed watching Cowboy or Laker games every weekend.
Just yesterday they’d had an argument about coming out to their close friends. Sighing, Greg kept remembering all the little insignificant issues that they quarrelled about in their year long affair. "How stupid... I can't believe we fought over those fucking things," Greg mumbled to himself. Looking up again, it appeared that the Stokes had also fallen asleep in their chairs as they waited for Nick to wake up. Greg finally turned and left, thinking that he couldn't face not being able to hug and kiss his injured lover. He would have to wait. He stopped the nurse at the front desk and asked if they would deliver a message to Nick for him when he awoke.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Nick was groggy even after sleeping in a chemically induced slumber for over 10 hours. He looked around his room and saw that his mom and dad were dozing in chairs. He felt terrible, as if he’d been run over by a 2 ton truck. Groaning, he pushed the morphine button next to him to try and ease some of his discomfort. He grimaced as he saw the swollen lumps on his arms and could only imagine how monstrous he must look to the outside world. He saw a flash of color walk by his door and it reminded him of one of Greg's ugly ass shirts. "Damn that guy had terrible taste" he thought wistfully, and wondered when his lover might stop by. He was afraid that Greg would come and have an emotional breakdown on him when what he really needed was strength from his friend. He was having difficulties dealing with another attack on his life. "I can't keep this strong front up for much longer," he thought wearily. He was always the strong one in the family. His sisters used to always call him their protector... "I don't think I will be able to protect anyone anymore," Nick thought sadly to himself. He was scared of his own shadow right now. "So much for being big and strong," he sighed. The morphine was kicking in again and he drifted off into a coma like sleep.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
The nurse took the paper from Greg and promised to give it to Nick when he woke. She looked at him with pity in her eyes, like she knew how weak he had suddenly become. Turning to leave, he walked quickly by Nick's room without looking back in at his friend.
"This apartment is too damn quiet," Greg muttered to himself. He went over to the stereo to put on some speed metal, the kind that Nick never let him play when he came over. The sound began to surge out of the speakers and hit Greg in the pit of his stomach. The heavy bass moving him as he sat on the couch.
Tears began streaming down his face uncontrollably. He could do nothing but let out huge sobs to try and inhale, while exhaling out all the fear and anguish that he felt inside.
"DAMN IT!, why wasn't it me?" Greg yelled as he slammed his fists into the couch.
Nick had been through so much, "Why did it have to be him?"
"Why... Why... WHY???" he sobbed brokenly.
"Damn it Greg, get a hold of your fucking self!" he screamed, trying to convince himself that if he did he’d be alright.
But the tears still came and the sobs finally melted away into a restless sleep.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Nick awoke to the sounds of people bustling about his room. His eyes slowly opened and he noted with amazement that his room had turned into a botanical garden over the course of a few hours. He saw that Gil, Catherine and Warrick were speaking to his parents in hushed tones. He eased himself up on the pillow to let them know he was awake.
"Hey Poncho, how you doing?" Grissom said as he strode over to the far side of the bed.
"I've been better," he managed to grumble. His voice didn't sound like his own, but rather, like there were marbles in his mouth. Nick realized that he hadn't really spoken in about 20 hours and was in desperate need of water.
"Oh, Nicky, we're so happy that you are okay" Catherine managed to speak through tears as she hugged him a little too hard.
"Ow!" he gasped, as she squeezed him tight.
"Oh, Nick, I'm so sorry", she gasped, bringing fresh tears to her eyes.
"Um... thanks for stopping by. Are all these flowers from you guys?" Nick croaked, taking a sip of the water that Warrick had knowingly gone to get.
"Well, you had a lot of us worried. I think these are from just about every branch of the Las Vegas PD, fire and rescue," Grissom explained.
"Even Ecklie managed to send something." Warrick mumbled uncomfortably, unable to look Nick in the eye.
"Where's the rest of the gang?" Nick managed through parched lips, only really wanting to know where one person was.
"There is still some paper work and cases that needed to be attended to, so Sara decided she would keep her mind off things by, what else, working. As for as Greg, I haven't seen him since we left the nursery." Grissom mentioned quizzically, as if just realizing the young CSI hadn't been seen since they left the scene of the crime.
"OH?.. just curious" stuttered Nick.
Just then the nurse entered and handed him a small piece of paper. Nick looked down at it, and then back at her and said, "what is this?" She responded with a shrug of her shoulders and left.
As he opened the paper and read the words on the page, Nick felt his heart jump. Tears began to stream down his face and he blearily looked around the room and asked for everyone to leave.
A stunned Catherine said, "Oh my god Nick, are you OKAY? Are you sure you want to be alone?"
Grissom took her arm and gave her a look that said "give him some time".
Nick sobbed, "yes, please...., just... go. I'm tired... and... I need,... I, I, I need to sleep."
His Mom and Dad just stood there shocked, like they didn't know what to do, and Nick thought that this was probably the first time they’d seen their grown son cry.
"Mom, Dad! Please, go. I'm Ok, I just need to be alone for a while." A worried looking nurse came in and put something in his IV before he could argue.
Once my room had emptied out and all was quiet but for the hum of the air conditioning, Nick reread the note that his lover had left for him.
