Nick/Greg Pre-Slash Post-Ep Challenge Fic
Jun. 15th, 2005 03:46 pmTitle: Test Subjects
Author: acroarcs
Rating: G
Pairing: Nick/Greg, pre-slash
Episode: 2x09, And Then There Were None
Summary: Sara can't find any love.
Notes: My roommate has decided Jorja Fox is the hottest person on television, so I've repeatedly shown him the mirror scene from this episode and the "I'll talk to the pretty one" scene from a season four episode. So I had to use that somehow. Plus a little Nick/Greg preslash to keep it interesting for me. Cross-posted at
csi_missing_500 for its second challenge.
Test Subjects
“Since when do I care about my appearance... I’ll show her I care, and I’ll show her what my appearance can do,” Sara said to herself. Her reflection in the bathroom mirror nodded back at her resolutely. She glanced down at the ring of products and appliances around the sink. She did, in fact, own every single one of them, and she did not, in fact, buy any of them just so she could show up Catherine. She just needed to figure out how to use them before shift started.

“Hey, Nick,” Sara said as she entered the break room. She tried to make sure she was smiling as she spoke, but the extra creams, powders, and chemicals made her face feel a little strange.
“Hi, Sara,” Nick said distractedly. He nodded at her in greeting, but immediately went back to making coffee.
“That’s it?” Sara asked. “Just ‘Hi, Sara’?”
Nick looked up from the coffee maker, his eyes a little wider than before. “Hi, Sara, how’s your shift going?” he asked, forehead wrinkled in confusion.
Sara sighed in frustration. “Nothing,” she said. “Catherine was right.”
“About what?” Nick asked.
“She said I don’t care about how I look,” Sara said. She sat down at the table grumpily.
“Oh,” Nick said, his eyebrows rising. “No, no, I can tell you’ve done… something…” He waved his hands in the air at her in a vague gesture.
“Yeah, you just can’t tell what and you didn’t notice it before,” Sara said bitterly.
“No,” Nick said. “It’s not that. I… I’ve just met someone.”
Sara grunted in laughter. “Right. You’ve just made her up on the spot.”
“No, really,” Nick said.
“Tell me something about her, then.”
“Well,” Nick said slowly. “She’s into surfing.” He poured himself a cup of coffee.
“She’s a surfer,” Sara said. “You’ve got so much in common.”
“I did tell her I know about cars.”
“That’s great, Nick,” Sara said sarcastically. “Really, that’s just great.” She stood up and left to find a more willing test subject.
She could see the most likely target sitting in plain view in the lab. Greg was leaning back in his chair with his feet up on a desk and a magazine on his lap.
“Hey, Greg,” Sara said as she walked in.
“Hey, Sara,” he said. He didn’t even look up at her.
“What is it with you people today?” Sara asked loudly.
“What?” Greg asked, startled. “I’m just reading.”
“What’s so interesting that you can’t even look up?”
“Car and Driver. I had been reading Sand and Surf earlier,” he said, motioning to a magazine on a nearby lab bench, “but this was Nick’s rather forceful suggestion.”
Sara stopped, things clicking. “You were reading about surfing until Nick talked to you about cars?”
“Yeah,” Greg said quickly, going back to his magazine.
Sara smiled (at least, she thought she was smiling) at figuring out something new, and left to find her next test subject. Wasn’t Warrick in the A/V lab?

Date: 2005-06-16 06:37 am (UTC)And yeah, they're just not good at being sneaky. I think it's against Greg's nature to hide things like that very well (unless he's trying to hide them from himself as well) and Nick's just too terrible a liar.

Date: 2005-06-19 05:53 pm (UTC)I agree, I think Greg somehow realized that hiding doesn't solve anything and Nick is a terrible liar, no matter how competitive he is. LOL
