Seriously, this is weirdest title I've ever come up with. This is pretty short, I'd call it a ficlet, and sprung from that place where plot bunnies spring from. Enjoy!

Title: Fishing For Comfort
Author: Quettaser
Rating: PG-13 (Two cusses, and one line of suggestive dialogue)
Summary: Greg needs consoling.

“Nicky, I need you,” were the first words Nick heard as he answered his cell phone. Greg sounded like he was near tears. Fear stabbed in Nick’s heart. He moved out of earshot of the others at the scene, praying his cell phone would hold onto the signal.

        “What’s wrong, baby? What happened?”

“I don’t know. I just came home and he was dead. Just there.”

“Dead? Greg, who’s dead?” urged Nick. He could see Greg’s face so clearly in his mind. He could hear the tears through the phone. Arms arched to hold him, to make it better. But a more desperate thought pushed past that. Was someone dead in their home?

“Lestat.” Nick let out a sigh of relief. Just Greg’s pleco, one of his fish. If there had been a real corpse in their house the lab would have swarmed the place, immediately outing Greg and himself and making them both prime suspects in the process.

“Jesus, Greg. You nearly gave me a heart attack.”

“You had a heart attack? I had to come home and find him like this. He looked so small just floating there. And I think the others were traumatized.”

Nick paused for a moment. It was sweet that Greg was so affected, but then again, it was just a fish. “I’m sorry,” he finally said.

“Don’t make fun of me. I’m grieving,” sniffled Greg.

“I’m not making fun. I’m just relieved. That’s all,” insisted Nick.

“Relieved? Lestat is dead. Think of all the algae he won’t eat. The glass he won’t suck. The water he won’t filter. And what will Louis do without him?” Louis was Greg’s other pleco, and although it was in fact a female pleco, Greg thought it would be more appropriate to call her Louis de Pont du Lac.

Louis is practically a woman around Lestat anyways, Greg had reasoned.

“Louis will be just fine. She’s a very independent pleco. And she has little Claudia.”

        “Claudia’s a bitch,” growled Greg.

Nick sighed. He had to get back to the case, but he wanted to make sure that Greg was okay before he got off the phone, because if he didn’t, he would come home to a very grumpy boyfriend. “What about Talbot? You have Armand and Memnoch too. And Akasha’s still there.”

There was a pause, and Nick could hear Greg thinking. “That’s true,” he finally sighed.

“Are you going to be okay?”

“I guess so.” The pout was audible.

“Look, when I get home, we’ll go out and get you a new fish. You could call her Merrick.”

“How did you know what I wanted to call her?” asked Greg, grief forgotten for a moment.

“I listen when you babble about books. Actually, I listen when you babble about anything. I love your voice,” said Nick, after carefully checking that no one was too near, or that they hadn’t come looking for him.

“Really? What else do you love about me?” urged Greg. Nick could tell he was smiling.

“There wouldn’t be enough time in the world to tell you everything I love about you.”

“Suck up. Don’t avoid the question.”

Nick sighed again, this time laughing slightly at himself and Greg. “I love that a dead fish can make you cry, I love the way I can hear your smile in your voice, I love the way you make my arms ache to hold you, I love the way you fish for compliments, I love it when you tell me you need me, and I love the way you can pull me away from a crime scene to help you grieve. But mostly I just love you.”

He could hear Greg sighing happily into the phone. “I love you too. Mmm, I needed that. You’re still a suck up though.”

“Well, there are some other things I could suck when I get home,” suggested Nick.

        “Tease.”

        “You love it.”

“Yeah, I really do.” There was another pause. “Wait, you’re at a scene? What the fuck are you doing talking to me? Get off the phone! You could get in serious trouble.”

Nick laughed outright. “It’s okay, Greg.”

“Shh! Don’t say my name! What if someone hears you?”

“Goodbye, love,” said Nick, trying to hold back his laughter.

“Goodbye, casual acquaintance with whom I have no romantic involvement!” Greg yelled into the phone, as if that were going to trick anyone. Nick hung up his cell phone and headed back towards the scene.
Catherine looked up from her work with a questioning gaze. “Who was that?”

“Oh, just one of my sisters,” replied Nick. “Her dog died and she needed some consoling.”

“Ah,” said Catherine. She waited until Nick’s back was turned before she smiled to herself, silently wondering why Nick’s “sister” was called Greg.

Fin!

A/N: In case you weren’t aware, Greg has named all his fish (in this story) after characters from Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Lestat and Louis are plecos (plecostomus, although that’s actually a small family of similar breeds of fish, Greg’s are Liposarcus multiradiatus, but the entire pleco family can be very difficult to tell apart, and there’s lots of interbreeding going on).

And, if you care, Claudia is a Gold Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), Talbot is a Serpae Tetra (Hyphessobrycon serape), Armand is a Blue Kribensis, or Krib (Pelvicachromis pulcher, which I find hilarious, because they’re very territorial and get easily pissed when trying to breed, hehe), Memnoch is a Red Oscar fish (Astronotus ocellatus), and Akasha is a Snowflake Eel (Gymnothorax tile).

These are all in one large (80+ gallon) community tank. Now, I’m not a fish expert, but according to my research, these fish should get along together relatively well (although fishes have distinct personalities, so every time it’s a gamble). And these aren’t the only fish in the tank. For example, Kribs usually live in medium sized groups, so Armand isn’t the only one, but he’s the boss and I didn’t feel like bogging you down with names.

...I swear I have a life...really...

“Goodbye, casual acquaintance with whom I have no romantic involvement!”

It's so cute, and so true-to-life. The number of times that I used to call my ex in tears only to end the conversation laughing and feeling better (after fishing for many a compliment) is close to infinite.

Great fic. ^_^

And you wrote it like it happens, too. Very real. Which was great. ^_^ Hee.

It was so cute. I love your fanfiction. And I love your research. Go you, for knowing all of that stuff about fish. Mostly, I love the idea of Nick and Greg, but I guess that was a given.

And the title was adorable. I was going to tell you how much I liked it, then I read the fanfiction and now I love it all the more.

Louis is practically a woman around Lestat anyways, Greg had reasoned.
Yep, you guess it. Loved that line. (There's a lot of love going around on this page).

Best line out of the whole thing!

That was so cute. Great job

Have to agree with the loving of the “Goodbye, casual acquaintance with whom I have no romantic involvement!” line. And also of Nick's very poor lying skills, I can almost see Catherine's face now :D Plus when you said the title was weird, I was expecting no fish, so at least the title (which is supercool by the by) is relevant. Anywhatsits, I should really be off to bed instead of sitting online doing anything BUT revision, just wanted to say that I continue the love above (rhymage!) for your story...

Ok I don't usually squeal but I have the urge to after reading this. Must...hold...back...squeal...fuck it. *squeal*

That was ADORABLE. Greg being all worked up over his fish and Nick doesn't have the same emotional attachment, then they profess their love in such a cute way...:D This was a real treat!

And plecostomi (hehe funny word) rock.

Hee. That was great! I love that his fish are named after Anne Rice characters (and that Louis is a girl, I find that hilarious).
Plus Nick's list of reasons he loves Greg is just too sweet.

Too sweet. Why can I see Nick being so heartbroken over his fish dying. And Nick knows him so well, he already has his name picked out. So cute. I love your fics, I really really do, and I know I say this a lot, but I'm so glad you decided to join our little Nick/Greg family, you've added so much to it.

This was cute. I am far too involved in my cat's lives, so it totally hit home with me.

I had a 100 gallon tank growing up and so long as you dont put more than like two agressive fish in there together, you'll be fine. Of course when it comes to betas, I don't care how big the tank is you can only have one. And I'll stop being Greg and going on and on about fish. Anywhoo, the is really cute. Greg was so upset, and Nick knew he just needed to talk. 'cause hi fishies are important. *I once had a friend not talk to me for two months, cause two of my fish died while I was on vacation and she didn't want to upset me.* The fish names are really cute, but I picture Greg beig a big fan of The Witching Hour series. Something about genetics and such. I'll shut up now, haven't commented a lot lately just kinda rambeled.

Oncle Julien is one of my fav characters ever. damnit, now I have to go and reread those books. Or maybe just the second one, since it focuses on Julien the most. But yeah, I don't spend my time thinking about the the music and movies in Nick and Greg's collections either. No, not at all.

Bwa! Oh you evil, evil person who made me laugh so hard I woke my daughter, who was sleeping on the couch. She stuck her head up and said, "Mommy, it's not funny. Go to bed."

Well, she's four. She doesn't know how funny it is. And sweet!

Just Greg’s pleco, one of his fish.

Just his pleco?! Just his pleco! *is offended on behalf of plecos, especially the bristlenose variety* I love the fish named after Anne Rice's vampires.

Oh, and because I'm nitpicky and a fish geek, I'd never put an oscar and an angelfish together. Too much fin-nipping. (Then again, my cichlid is a little ass.)
