Title: The Night Shift (Prologue)
Rating: PG
Pairing: Slight Nick/Greg
Spoilers: None
Summary: A flashback of Greg’s first day at work in Las Vegas.
Disclaimer: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and the characters of Nick Stokes and Greg Sanders are privately owned, indeed not by me, and everything in these stories is purely fictional. Although, since CSI routinely expects the audience to deduce things about the characters and their connections to each other themselves, who’s to say this never really happened?

After darkness fell in Las Vegas, it was very different than nighttime anywhere else in the country. Bright neon colors, showgirls with headdresses to rival tropical birds; it seemed like most of Vegas didn’t even open its doors to the public until after the sun had set. Greg found out on his first shift that the nightlife was indeed the pulse that kept the city running, not to mention the crime lab, and he definitely thought that he could get used to that.

Coming from his last lab in San Francisco and leaving behind the coast, the sunlight and all of his friends, Greg has expected the transition to be hard, the new lab environment established and unwilling to change, and his fellow DNA co-workers to be cliqued and unaccepting of his more unique qualities. He had found nothing of the sort, and although he received some disapproving glares at his choice of music and the volume at which he played it, most people seemed to like him, or at least tolerate his behavior silently. Greg could deal with either.

Grissom had seemed intimidating and eccentric when Greg had first met him in his office full of fetal pigs in formaldehyde and bugs push-pinned to corkboards, and Catherine had stunned him with her off-kilter, yet professional manor and strawberry-blond good looks. Warrick, clearly as straight as they come but gorgeous none-the-less, caught his eye until he noticed the man walking beside and a little behind him, dark haired and partly hidden by Warrick’s broad shoulders, and when Greg saw him laugh and heard that southern-tinted voice for the very first time, it was like the floor had fallen out from under him and he suddenly couldn’t catch his breath.

“Hi, I’m Nick Stokes. You must be the new guy.” And those dark eyes and that nice-guy smile, and Greg found that all he could do was stare.

Truly, he never had a chance.
