Title: This wondeful thing we had.
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Nick's engagement get's Greg to think about the relationship they had together. Small story I wrote to get rid of my writers block.
Spoilers: For season 5.

 

Greg watched from the evidence room as Nick's girlfriend showed everyone in the break room her new engagement ring. Nick was standing beside her looking proud. Greg knew he should go down there to congratulate them, but he wasn't sure he could do it sounding sincere. So he just kept on working, trying to block out the sounds of happiness.

It had been three years now since he and Nick had broken up. Their relationship had never been perfect, but they had always managed to work out their problems. Then came the shift-change, and soon all their free time was spent shouting at each other. Finally it came to a point where they saw no other choice than to break up, even though Greg still had some feelings for Nick. It wasn't until Nick buried alive though, when Greg realized how deep those feeling were. And when Nick got rescued, Greg swore to himself to tell Nick he still had feeling for Nick. He decided to wait until Nick would get back to work so that Nick would have enough time to get better. However that turned out to be a mistake, because then Nick met Carol. Nick came back to work telling everyone about this amazing girl he had met and how much in love he was. It broke Greg's heart.

He contemplated for a while on telling Nick his feelings, but he saw that Nick was truly happy, and Greg didn't have the heart to possibly break that happiness. After all, that's all he ever wanted, to see Nick happy. So Greg just watched from farther away as Nick and Carols relationship got deeper. And Greg kept on living for the moments when he could work with Nick or simply just stand close to the love of his life.

Greg got startled out of his thoughts when the door suddenly opened up. He raised his head and saw Nick steping in.

”Hi Greg,” He said. ”I hope I didn't scare you.”

”No, you didn't,” Greg said. ”I was just thinking.”

“About what?”

“Just some personal problems,” Greg answered. He saw Nick getting a worried expression on his face.

“Hey, don't worry about it,” Greg quickly assured him. “One of my friends just doesn't realize how much he's hurting me with his actions.” That was true. “But I'm going to talk to him about it.” But that was a lie. It was far too late to tell Nick about his feeling anymore.

“Are you sure?” Nick asked. “You're my best friend Greg, you can tell me anything, you know that.” Greg gave him a small smile. If only that was true.

“Hey, everything's all right. Besides, why are we talking about me, when you have obviously some bigger news to tell?” He said, pointing to the break room where Carol was still showing of the ring.

Nick got a big smile on his face. “ Yeah, that's true. I proposed to Carol in the weekend and she said yes. We're going to get married next summer.“

“Congratulations, Nick. You deserve it.” Greg said. He was surprised to hear his voice sounded sincere.

Nick blushed from delight.” Thanks, Greg.” He hesitated a little. “You're opinion means a lot to me, you know.”

Greg gave a small sigh. “ All I ever want is for you to be happy, Nick.”
 

They stood in silence for a while, just looking at each other. Then Carol put his head inside the door.

“Hey, Greg. Nick, we're gonna miss the table reservation, if we don't hurry up,” she said.

“Just a minute, honey” Nick said softly. Carol nodded and disappeared from the doorway.

Nick turned back to Greg. “I've got to go now.”

“So I heard. I'm really happy for you, Nick,” Greg said. Nick nodded to him, and turned to walk away from the room. Just when he was stepping out the door, Greg called out to him.

“Hey, Nick.” Nick turned back to look at Greg.

“I love you Nick”, Greg said quietly, giving Nick a small smile.

“I love you too, Greg,” Nick answered, before stepping out the room and closing the door, taking Greg's heart with him.

Ahw. Poor Greg, he should have realized sooner Nick was worth fighting for :( This was a sad, but lovely scene. Yay for beating that writer's block!

I'm not a native English speaker,
but here are some mistakes that glared at me:
get's ---> gets
Nick buried alive ---> Nick was buried alive
door suddenly opened up ---> door opened
You're opinion ---> Your opinion

Having said that: points for beautiful last line. *sniffles*

Now that you pointed those out, I feel pretty stupid for not noticing them. I definitely need to get a beta for my next story.

I'm glad you liked that last line. I was going to end the story with Greg saying he was happy for Nick, but then that last part just came to my head out of nowhere and I had to write it down.
