Title: Silver Lining
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Nick/Greg
Summary: Every cloud has its silver lining, no matter how dark it is.
Disclaimer: I don't own anything CSI related. At least, I don't think I do.
Spoilers: Grave Danger

When Greg thought about what had almost happened to Nick, what did happen, he tasted bile and felt the prickling sting of tears. At the same time, he couldn’t help but take in a few deep breaths to puff his chest out. There weren’t enough words in English, Spanish, or Norwegian to accurately get across just how proud he was of Nick for being able to survive it, and then, more amazing to Greg still, get over it. Greg still clung to middle school memories of rugby players cornering him in the locker room, but Nick just moved on. It was incredible.

They’d been locked in the ninth circle of hell that first week or so, it seemed. It took a lot of coaxing, a lot of pleading, and a bit of very scary shouting to get Nick to allow Greg a peek at what was going on in his head. Once they’d joined forces, they moved through the underworld towards normality, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Greg had been very careful not to look back.

However, normality had been twisted inside out, thrown in the dryer, and been put on ‘hot’. Greg knew things were going to change, knew that Nick’s perspective would be different, and had been silently preparing himself for the heartbreak of a lifetime.

He had not, however, expected Nick’s newfound insight to include an insatiable appetite for aspects of life he’d once been wary of. Greg had been ready for bitterness, for sarcasm, for twisted humor and tears. He hadn’t quite prepared himself for club hopping and road trips to nowhere, completely with goofy music and hot desert kisses.

Before, about twice a year, Nick would allow Greg to pull him around to his club of choice. It had always been loud, noisy, sweaty, and filled with moving bodies. Nick had never quite got into the ‘lose yourself’ notion, and had usually just stood there, acting as Greg’s pole as he had done pseudo strip teases.

Now they coordinated their nights off with club openings and dance parties. Greg’s friends adored Nick, cooed over the gorgeous Texan dancer, and asked Greg where to find one of their own. And that was one of the road bumps, the swelling sickness as he thought about what they had to go through to get to that point, the guilt that could almost ruin an entire night as Greg tried to reason that every cloud had its silver lining.

But it was the actual dancing that was best. Greg had always liked it, thought that maybe Nick had even liked it all along, even if he hadn’t joined it. Now it was a dance for two, with Nick’s hands roaming down Greg’s back, torsos pressed tight together, sweat beaded on flushed skin that turned kisses salty.

They swayed together to music with electronic notes and robot voices, and when groins touched in the midst of their dancing, the white stars with laser beam tails weren’t just produced by mere sensation. It was when he was lost in the blissful chaos of the beat, feeling the heat of Nick’s body against his, that he could be grateful for what they had suffered through together.

Oooh, I love this so much. I was so upset at Greg's apparent lack of concern in Grave Danger, but then realised that he just went into shock and was like o.o all episode. At the end when Grissom told him to get the fire extinguisher and he shot off like a racehorse, it confirmed my suspicions.

Um, anyway, yes, I really, really like this. A lot. So much. x.x

There weren’t enough words in English, Spanish, or Norwegian to accurately get across just how proud he was of Nick for being able to survive it.

Definitely absolutely adore that. And "desert kisses"... and Greg's pseudo strip teases. *wibbles* Thank you.

…cooed over the gorgeous Texan dancer, and asked Greg where to find one of their own. Love that!

But it was the actual dancing that was best. OK, I know I'm prejudiced, but dancing IS the best. Sometimes it just feels like you're flying! Whatever kind you're doing.

This was really good.

I really enjoyed this. I loved the part about Nick being Greg's pole while dancing. *flashes too all the people I've used as poles while dancing* It gave a nice contrast to how you ended the piece.

You SHOULD give in to dancing. The dancing demands that you come to it! Lead and follow dancing is a great way to get started because you're attached to someone else and you're doing it together. I learned salsa, ballroom and swing, but swing is just SO fun. Great music too. And everyone is watching themselves, they don't care about you.

First off, whoo! shoutout to Orpheus! That aside, this is a really interesting take on Nick’s recovery. I think we’re going to see his character go millions of ways (at least in fic, although sometimes canon isn’t all that consistent either, but that’s another rant for later...) and I think this is one of the more daring routes. I really like it.
