You’re cold. I’m ashamed that’s the first thing I noticed. Not your crazy hair, your chocolate eyes, the soft smell of citrus mingling with your expensive coffee. All is stolen by the sterile hospital and its graven staff. Your hair is plastered to your forehead from the stress of staying asleep, your eyes closed in a vain attempt of forgetting, your otherwise comforting smell overwhelmed by the harsh hygienic tang of the room.

A nurse invades the space. I don't know what she's saying. She could be explaining the theory of relativity for all I know. Hell, the only thing relative here is you. And you're broken. I make some non-commitive noise and she smiles, drifting to another victim.

I let go of your hand, though it never registered I was holding it. There is a spasm in my pocket; I pick up my phone and answer, not knowing whose calling. I hear “sorry” and “work” followed by “early” and something else that I ignore. I close my phone, feather you a kiss on your brow that hopefully you’ll never remember. As I leave, I find myself mourning for your innocence. I don't want you to "grow up" and be like everyone else. You deserve more.
