Nick let out a huge sigh when he hung up and thought to himself…”one catastrophe contained and a couple of hundred to go!
============================================
And right there and then, catastrophe number two reared it’s ugly head. Nick was back in Las Vegas BUT he was at the airport with no wheels and (he started slapping his pockets) no house or truck keys and no cell phone. What was worse, he really had no idea where anything was. He sat down and thought for a few minutes. He was trained to find answers to questions. All he had to do was approach this like he would a crime scene and establish priorities. First off, he needed to get home which meant a cab ride but he had no cash so he started looking for an ATM.
He was pleasantly surprised to see the balance on his checking account. Evidently he was still drawing full pay while on extended sick leave. He got the maximum withdrawal amount and went outside to hail a cab. On the drive to his apartment, he worried over the rest of his problems. Suddenly, he remembered a long time ago he had fastened a spare key above the doorframe. It was well hidden and he’d never had occasion to use the spare. He’d had a copy made for Greg from his own house key. Cool, that meant he could at least get into his own place.
He was so happy to see not only his truck but also Greg’s little silver Jetta in the parking lot when he got there. He paid the driver, adding a decent tip and rushed up the stairs to Greg. He knew the minute he saw that car that the apartment was four walls; Greg being inside those four walls made it his home.
He found the key right where he had put it all those months ago opened the door and stepped into…chaos.
The living room was dusty, the air stale and all the boxes they had moved from Greg’s place were still stacked against the walls. It looked just like it had months ago when Nick had left to go to work. He walked into the kitchen. The only sign that anyone had been there in all this time was a coffee cup on the counter. He saw nothing of Greg’s anywhere. He walked into the bedroom, their bedroom. Unlike the living room, that room was very clean. The bed was made, all the surfaces were dust free and his cell phone was in its charger on his nightstand. Greg’s side was completely bare of everything except a lamp. Nick had to stop for a second as pain gripped his heart and then his stomach. He knew that was Greg’s car; where was Greg? He went into the bathroom and it was like the bedroom; clean to the point of being sterile. All of Greg’s various body washes, shampoos and conditioners were gone.
Nick just stood there. He was back in the box again only this time the walls weren’t Plexiglas but pain and loss. He was just as helpless now as he had been two months ago.
Suddenly he had a thought and went down the hall to the second bedroom. He pushed the door open and there was Greg. Nick stepped into the room quietly and tried to understand what was happening. Finally, his need to touch, taste and smell his partner overcame everything else and he stripped off his shoes socks jeans and shirt and carefully slid into the bed. He slowly slid his arm under Greg’s head and wiggled until he was plastered tight against his back he laid his other arm over Greg’s body, buried his nose in his neck and took his first deep smell of Greg in months. His whole body relaxed. He had no idea he was so tense until everything just let go. I’m home now.
================================================
Greg was sleeping soundly for the first time since Nick was taken. The dirty T-shirt might have seemed a little weird to most people but it was saturated with Nick’s smell and it was like a pacifier to Greg. He dreamed. Nick had never been kidnapped; the shifts had never been split. He and Nick were getting ready to go to Texas on their four-day weekend. They were taking a nap before they had to leave for the airport. He could feel Nick’s warm body against his back. He felt his arms holding him close. He could hear Nick taking a deep breath and inhaling his smell the way he always did. It was so real, so very real. Greg began to cry silently in his sleep.
Nick felt the shakes start in the beloved body he was holding. He pulled Greg even closer against him and began to whisper soft soothing little ‘hushes’ against Greg’s neck.
Greg was so exhausted that it was difficult to drag himself out of the deep dark hole he was in. But slowly and surely he began to stir. Nick knew the minute he was awake because he went completely still and his whole body stiffened in his arms.
“Relax babe, its me, really me. I’m here and this is real. I’m holding you and I’m never gonna let you go.”
Greg began to fight his way out of the arms holding him. Nick was terrified. He saw everything he loved and desired trying to get away from him. He opened his arms and let Greg go. He swore he really did feel his heart breaking in his chest. That’s what had to be happening because the pain was so intense. Greg turned around in the bed, sat up and looked down at Nick. He slowly reached a shaking hand out to the man in his bed; the man who looked like his Nick, sounded like him and even felt like him. He touched that familiar face, felt the slight stubble on the much thinner cheeks. He rubbed his finger tips over the sweet lips he had kissed so many times and then slipped them up into the dark hair and over his head.
“Nick? Is it really you? Are you really here?”
“Yes babe, it’s really me and I’m really here. I’ve missed you so very much.”
With a strangled cry, Greg almost threw himself on top of Nick. He rubbed himself against him. His hands moved frantically over his body, his face and up into his hair. “It’s you, Oh God it’s really you. I wondered sometimes if I’d ever see you again.”
“Sweetheart, you’re not gonna get rid of me that easy. Why are you in here? Why aren’t you in our bedroom and WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SMELL?”
Greg had to laugh at the indignant tone in Nick’s voice. “It’s your T-shirt, well it’s one of your t-shirts that you’d left in your locker at work. I brought it home and spread it over my pillow so I could smell you and maybe get some sleep.”
Nick wrinkled up his nose, rolled over, got up and walked around the bed. He pulled Greg up out of the bed and said, “We are going to sleep in our bedroom and we’ll fumigate this place after we’ve both caught up on our rest”.
He pulled Greg down the hall and into their room. They crawled into their bed and immediately crawled into each other’s arms. Greg started to ask Nick questions but Nick pressed a passionate, deep kiss on his mouth and told him they were both exhausted and they were going to sleep and they’d do all their talking when they woke up. Greg smiled at Nick and told him when they woke up, they had other things to do besides talk. Nick asked if Greg had to go in to work that night and was so pleased when Greg told him no. He’d maxed out his overtime and Grissom had told him not to come in for 48 hours.
They cuddled close and held each other until they both fell asleep in the middle of a kiss.
