The Story So Far...

(Sixteen - Name That Mutagen)

Nick sat morosely on Jean Gray’s examination table while she and Greg stood in front of a whiteboard, each with a marker in their hand. After re-evaluating the scene and finding several hairs, a chunk of fur and another spent tranquilizer dart, Dr. Gray had convinced Nick to let her perform blood tests and an x-ray on him in the privacy of the underground lab, rather than run the risk of being caught getting tested at work.

“It’s obvious that a mutation is there, but none of the tests so far have determined what it is.” Jean turned away from the whiteboard and walked back to the table. “Nick. Is there anything about yourself that people are reactive to?” Nick thought for a moment, shrugged.

“No, ma‘am. I’ve always been… you know… normal.” That was when Greg piped up.

“I know what it is. Everyone likes you. Everyone does what you ask them to. No hesitation. You can talk anyone into anything. Oh, and you have the scariest temper I‘ve ever seen.” Jean latched onto that last observation.

“What happens when he loses his temper, Greg?” Nick’s ears turned pink. He didn’t often lose his temper and was embarrassed when he did.

“It’s strange. I’ve only seen it happen once, but… I remember it because it stormed. Vegas doesn’t get storms like that… I’ve never seen one like that here before or since.” Greg turned to Nick. “And… you know, things broke. You came into the lab and yelled at me. You pointed at something and an entire rack of empty test tubes shattered. You yelled at Grissom. His treasured fetal pig… the jar exploded.” Nick suddenly looked stricken.

“I remember that. Everyone, well… everyone except Grissom joked that the lab was haunted. But it never happened after that. Did it?” Greg shook his head. Jean looked excited.

“May I stick a camera down your throat?”

“Please, no.”

“Greg, I’d like you to leave.” Greg looked vaguely hurt, but left the room. Jean stood in front of Nick and concentrated on him for a moment, then picked something out of his mind. Leaned down, whispered in his ear. Straightened up, her face carefully blank. Nick gripped the sides of the table so hard his knuckles were white, and his face reddened.

“How dare you say that,” he snarled. “How dare you say it was my fault I was only nine years old I was just a kid HOW DARE YOU SAY IT WAS MY FAULT?” Jean’s feet left the floor momentarily as she skidded backwards, away from Nick.

“That’s it!” she exclaimed. “Nick, I’m sorry. I know it wasn’t your fault. It’s like a wound in your mind, but it’s not your fault. I only said it to make you angry.” As abruptly as the anger had coursed through Nick, it was gone. It had only been a test. “It’s in your voice. That’s why people do what you want them to, and the stronger your emotion is, the stronger the force is. I’m surprised you don’t sing.”

“I’m sorry, ma‘am.” Nick helped Jean straighten herself out. “If you heard me sing, you’d run.” She smiled and opened the lab door, only to have Greg stumble through. “Hear anything interesting, G?” Nick smirked. Greg had the decency to turn pink.

“Ah, sorry. I wasn’t listening, I was trying to look through this stupidly small window. Why bother even having one if it’s going to be that small? How’d it go?” Nick shrugged again.

“Okay. Jean figured out that it’s my voice. It’s not much.” Jean put her hand on Nick’s upper arm.

“Nick, if you need me for anything, I’m not hard to find.” Nick raised his eyebrows.

“What I need is for you and the other guys you’ve got here to stay out of the kitchen and upstairs, okay? I can’t have you tromping around there while this is still an active scene.” Nick didn’t want to sound like a jerk, but letting them stay in the school was running the risk of getting in serious trouble. Jean understood.

“I’ll keep everyone down here for the time being. And please, Nick… anything you need…” Nick nodded.

“Thanks.”

* * *

As Nick and Greg climbed into the truck, the Texan turned and gave Greg a look.

“What?”

“Let’s go back to your place when we’re done shift. I want to see if Jean’s right.” Greg gave him a crooked smile.

“Whatever you want, Nicky.”
