The Story So Far...
(Fifteen - Nightcrawler)
Nick was back on his feet quicker than Greg was, and shone his flashlight into the room. Sitting in the corner was… something. Blue. A flash of yellow eyes. Claws, pointed teeth (fangs?) and a tail. A long tail. A long, pointed tail.
“Sir?” Was it a sir? Nick wasn’t sure what it was. It shied away from him.
“Gegrüßet seist du, Maria, voll der Gnade, der Herr ist mit dir. Du bist gebenedeit unter den Frauen, und gebenedeit ist die Frucht deines Leibes, Jesus, der in uns den Glauben vermehre. Heilige Maria, Mutter Gottes, bitte für uns Sünder jetzt und in der Stunde unseres Todes. Amen. I’m sorry. You scared me.”
“You mean, it talks?” Greg asked, still sitting on the floor.
“Ja,” it answered, finally meeting Nick‘s eyes. “I talk. You look like you‘ve never seen a blue mutant before.” Nick half-smiled at it. “Your freund on the floor there looks like he needs a new pair of undershorts.”
“You’ve got a face only a mother could throw into a river,” Greg retorted, getting to his feet. The blue thing laughed.
"And she did! That's how I came to be known as Nightcrawler, the greatest star of the trapeze in the Munich Circus! They adopted me as a small blue child. Nein. I joke. It was actually a waterfall she threw me into."
“Okay, okay. I’m Nick Stokes, from the crime lab. This is my partner, Greg Sanders. What are you doing here?” The blue creature flashed white, pointed teeth.
“Doktor Gray is trying to find a cure for me. Excuse me for not introducing myself properly. I am Kurt Wagner, known as Nightcrawler, the greatest star…”
“…of the trapeze. Caught that the first time around,” Greg grinned. Now that the initial shock of Nightcrawler’s appearance had worn off, he could appreciate the mutant’s sense of humour. “What cure is Dr. Gray looking for? And why are you up here instead of with her?”
“I was sleeping. I heard you coming and apparated away. Realized that Doktor Gray told me to stay here and came back. That’s when you came in and screamed like a little girl.” Again, a flash of those teeth. Nick couldn’t hold back his laughter, and received a look of disgust from Greg. “As for what she is helping me with? I have the Legacy Virus.” Nick looked stricken, his laughter suddenly worried away.
“Is this virus restricted to mutants? Is it contagious?”
“Ja, only mutants can get it. The first stages of it are flu-like, then the mutant is open to suggestion. Nein. Not suggestion. Mind control to whomever administered it. Mutant powers are diminished. If left untreated, it will kill. And nein, it is not contagious, so you have nothing to worry about.” Nick snorted.
“Is it that obvious? I found out an hour ago that I’m a mutant and now everyone seems to know. Is it some sort of radar that you have?” Greg watched the repartee between the two of them, not saying anything. He hated to see Nick get upset. The one single time that he’d seen Nick lose his temper entirely, the staff at the lab had practically fallen over themselves to placate him. It even seemed like the weather itself had empathized with him; Greg remembered that Las Vegas had experienced one of the worst thunderstorms in a decade.
Nightcrawler simply laughed.
“Nein, Herr Stokes. It’s just a look you have. That we all have. Psychic or no, we all know each other for what we are. It’s just the way God made us.”

Date: 2005-03-11 06:51 am (UTC)So the story keeps developing, and its getting really interesting, but I love Nightcrawler, so anything with him in is a bonus. Plus, I think you got his voice spot on.
*waits for next chapter*

Date: 2005-03-11 06:54 am (UTC)And I love that he makes fun of Greg not once but twice. Chapter 16 is going to be Name That Mutagen, I think. :D I'm already antsy to start it!
ps - clue: it's not just the weather that reacts to Nick's moods... everything responds to them.

Date: 2005-03-11 02:06 pm (UTC)Gegrüßet seist du, Maria,
voll der Gnade,
der Herr ist mit dir.
Du bist gebenedeit unter den Frauen,
und gebenedeit ist die Frucht deines Leibes,
Jesus, der in uns den Glauben vermehre.
Heilige Maria, Mutter Gottes,
bitte für uns Sünder
jetzt und in der Stunde unseres Todes.
Amen.
If you don't have umlaute (ä, ü, ö) on your keyboard, you can also type ae, ue, oe and ss for ß (gegrüßet = gegruesset).
So, our nice and patient and peaceful Nick can be a real fury if necessary. Very nice idea.

Date: 2005-03-11 05:09 pm (UTC)"Spectacular language" *laughs* that's nice. Normally I hear mumbled comments such as "it's so fucking difficult ....." (even for Germans ;D). And I just found out that slash fiction in German is anything but erotic. It's the sound I think. So I would really like to know why you took German in high school. (I'm a very curious person. Can I declare that as a disease?)
And, of course, if you need any help, I'll be at your service.
By the way, "Herr Stokes" .... *shudders with pleasure*

Date: 2005-03-12 03:11 am (UTC)German is the antithesis of erotic XD It's a very commanding sounding language, and VERY distinctive when you hear it; that's what I like about it :) I found it much easier to learn than French... it could be that I had the basis of the grammar structure with the masculine-feminine-neuter (il elle, il - er, sie, es), which is the same in French as it is in German.
I appreciate any help you can give me :) There'll be quite a bit of Herr Stokes, teehee.

Date: 2005-03-12 09:36 pm (UTC)occuped by the French during the centuries and, therefore, you find a lot of French words and expressions used in our specific language here.
Besides, I love the sound of the French language though I've found it difficult to learn. As well as Spanish. I can't pronounce the Spanish R correctly.
I think it depends on the source of your own language whether it's difficult to learn this or that language or get a feeling for it or not. English and German are Germanic languages whereas French, Spanish or Italian base on Latin.
Okay, in order to end my babbling about languages: Frau Viva Nova, ich brauche mehr Gerg und Herr Stokes. ;D
