Chapters One through Thirteen

(Fourteen - Nick’s Truck, Revisited)

“So, you’re a mutant, huh?” Greg gave Nick a lopsided grin.

“No. I don’t know. Maybe? I’ve had blood work done before, how come it never showed up there? Don’t you think I’d be aware of something like that in myself? I don‘t even know what I have.” Nick stared disbelievingly out of the windshield. Greg leaned over and put his hand on Nick’s shoulder.

“What are you so worried about? I think it’s kind of cool, personally. I’d like to be a mutant… like Spider-Man or something. Shooting webs out of my wrists and swinging off of the Tangiers or the Rampart… Hah, that would give Sam Braun the heart attack of his life. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s The Sanders-man…” He trailed off when he realized that Nick wasn’t listening. “Nick. Nick. It’s okay.”

“Should I get tested again?” Nick hesitated for a moment. “Will you do it?”

“Yeah, of course. I’ll have to clear it with Grissom, though.” Greg pressed his lips to the side of Nick’s face. “Don’t worry. Are you ready to go to school?”

“Yeah.” Nick started the truck and they drove in silence. Nick was obviously wrapped up in his own thoughts and Greg didn’t want to intrude.

They were met in the long, sweeping driveway by two women, both wearing leather cat suits with a red “X” over the heart. Greg’s first thought was an image of Nick wearing one of those suits. He suppressed a grin and got out of the truck. Nick spoke first.

“I’m Nick Stokes. This is an active crime scene, you can’t be here.” Greg trotted up behind him.

“I’m Jean Gray, and this is Ororo Munroe. We need to speak to you concerning Professor Xavier.” Greg handed Nick his field kit and introduced himself.

“I’m Greg Sanders. Nick and I are here to go over the scene again. We’ve got a suspect and we want to see if we can find any evidence that he was in the school.” He shook the second woman’s hand and wondered what had caused her hair to go white at such an early age.

“Professor Xavier is missing,” she stated. “Jean and I were away from the school when it happened, and there’s no sign of where he could be. We brought back two of the students, as well as the reason we were away from the school in the first place. His name is Nightcrawler. He’s inside.” Nick sighed.

“You really can’t be in there. If there’s any evidence of who kidnapped the rest of the students, as well as Professor Xavier, then you’re running the risk of contamination. “ Jean spoke up again.

“I’m sorry. We’ll try and be out as soon as possible. I’ve also located Wolverine and Karma…”

“They’re in the Charter Behavioural Health psychiatric ward,” Greg interrupted. “We just came from there. We didn’t see Logan, but Olivia’s not doing very well. She’s very weak and her, ah, ability to heal herself isn’t working.”

Jean closed her eyes for a moment, searching. “She’s got the Legacy Virus. We need to get them out. If I can’t help her, she’ll die.” She turned to Nick. “But you need help, too.“ Focusing her attention on Storm: “Get Bobby and Rogue from the jet.“ Walking up the driveway, she spoke over her shoulder. “Are you coming? Mr. Stokes. I’m a doctor. You want to look at the house? I want to look at you.” Nick glanced over at Greg, his brows drawn together.

“Hey, what was that?” Greg’s head jerked up at the sound of a loud Whump! from down the hall. Nick shone his flashlight in the direction of the noise.

“It came from that room.” Greg logged the hair that he’d tweezed from the carpet and motioned for Nick to follow him.

“I’m not investigating that by myself. You’ve got the gun, big man. I get to play the damsel in distress this time. What if it’s a big hairy monster that wants to eat me?” Nick smirked.

“Who would want to eat you? You’re not much more than skin on bones, G.” He stepped in front of Greg and opened the door. “There’s nothing in here.” Greg half-pushed Nick aside and walked into the room.

“Jeez, now I feel like a big scaredy-cat.”

Whump!

Nick barely had time to register that Greg had screamed before he was knocked onto his ass by the younger man. Greg’s eyes were wide with disbelief and fear.

“What. Is. That??”
