Jan. 10th, 2007 11:50 pmChapter: Ten
Pairing: Nick/Greg
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: None, really.
Genre: Angst. Romance. Post-Ep.
Summary: Post ep for Feeling the Heat. Greg's angst about the case and the events afterwards. I'm not a big fan of this chapter, but maybe you will be. Who knows. I redid the photo in this one, cos I didn't like the other one.
It had to be said that flying with an eight month old was not Nick Stokes’ best idea. The second they McCarran airport, her cry was heard over all the intercom systems and passengers idle chatter. Ordinarily it would have been enough to embarrass Nick, but then again ordinarily he didn’t go out in public with Amelia a whole lot for fear of running into someone that he knew. However he figured that the airport would be one of the last places anybody would find him, until he saw the yellow crime scene tape and three cop cars outside.
Shit. Of all the days.
“Nicky!” A voice startled him from behind and he sighed softly before turning around. “What are you doing here man; I thought you were goin’ to that conference in
“Hey ‘Rick. Yeah, I am. Just on my way there.” It seemed odd to Nick that Warrick hadn’t asked about Amelia, who was still whimpering slightly but seemed to have calmed down now that she was in Nick’s arms. “Uh… this is … my niece, Amelia.”
”Cute baby. Where’s your sister?”
“In … in the uh, bathroom. She came to visit me and now we’re uh, flying back home.”
“Alright then. Man, this place is a mess.”
”Yeah, what happened?” Nick bounced Amelia on his hip to soften her sobs, while he eyes processed the scene. To anyone else it would be obvious that Nick was Amelia’s father by his doting nature toward her, but lucky for him Warrick seemed oblivious.
”Body found in luggage. Pretty gruesome man; consider yourself lucky you’re getting out of town for a few days. Hey, is Greg here?”
”What? Greg … no, why would Greg be here?” Nick was almost too quick to deny ever seeing him, which caused Warrick to raise an eyebrow and Nick to kick himself internally for raising suspicions.
“Griss said that he was going to this conference with you?”
“Ah, nah man. He bailed on me, said something about having too much of a backlog.”
”Huh. Picture that.”
“Yeah, listen ‘Rick I better get going. My … sister will be done soon and we better go get checked in.”
“Sure, I’ll see you when you get back, man. Take care of yourself.” Warrick reached out and took hold of Amelia’s hand, shaking it lightly. “Nice to meet you, Amelia” He chuckled softly at the gurgling noise she made and wandered back over to the crime scene.
Needless to say, Nick made a quick exit.
“Baby, shh. Calm down, please?” Nick rocked her back and forward as he sat back in his seat. She somehow managed to sleep through the take-off, but as soon as the plane levelled out and people were beginning to get up and bustle around, she was wide awake and letting everybody know about it.
It wasn’t that Nick thought he was a bad father, but right at his core he knew that he would never be as good of a father as Greg. When Greg looked at Amelia, the light radiating off his skin could almost blind you. When she smiled at him, sometimes he thought he was going to burst because he was so happy. Nick could understand Greg wanting to tell the world that Amelia was his, because she’s beautiful and because she makes him so unbelievably happy. But he wasn’t ready to give him that right, even though it should never have been his decision in the first place. Just because Nick lived in secret, hiding in shadows of other people to make sure nobody ever found out who he really as, Greg shouldn’t have to do the same. And yet he did, because he loved Nick with all of his heart and if that was what Nick needed to be happy, then Greg would give it to him.
”You all better now?” Nick asked softly, burping her after feeding her. She looked up at him with her brilliant eyes, bottom lip quivering, and Nick knew what was coming next. Thinking quickly he dived into his bag and retrieved the small stuffed bunny that they had bought her when they first met her in the hospital. It was like her comfort blanket, and without it both Nick and Greg had a hard time getting her to sleep. He gave the bunny to her, chuckling as her hands grasped it and her ‘I’m-just-about-to-cry’ look softened. Leaning the chair back, Amelia laid her head on his chest and began falling asleep once again.
“She’s beautiful.” The woman in the row next to Nick leaned over the aisle said softly, with a hint of nostalgia in her voice. She wasn’t an old woman, probably in her mid-thirties, but her eyes glazed over slightly as she spoke.
“Thankyou.” Nick replied honestly. Because he’d never really been anywhere with Amelia, nor ever admitted to anybody that she was his, he had never received compliments about her. Of course he always knew that she was gorgeous, but hearing other people say it made his heart swell. Even if she didn’t have any of his genes.
“So flying without Mom then?”
”Uh. Well, that’s a fairly long story.”
“It’s a fairly long flight.” The woman smiled, and Nick felt almost compelled to talk to her.
”Well, it all started three years ago…”
And for the next hour Nick retold his and Greg’s story, surprisingly without considering that the woman would be judging him or thinking that he shouldn’t be allowed to have children. He supposed it was because this woman was a stranger and he would most likely never see her again, but then there was also something about this woman that told Nick she was wise beyond her years. When he finished the story, up to date including the encounter with Warrick this morning, the woman had tears in her eyes.
”Are you okay?” Nick asked earnestly, concerned for his new friends welfare.
“I had a baby three years ago. She was … she was beautiful, looked a lot like Amelia.” She paused, wiping the tear away with a tissue before choking back a sob and continuing. “But when she was about six months old they found … well, she … there was nothing they could do.” As the sobs racked her body, Nick picked Amelia up slowly and placed her in the woman’s arms, where she remained for the rest of the flight.
As the plane landed in
”Don’t let him get away from you. You have everything; you just need to work a little bit harder to keep it. And don’t be afraid of telling your parents, or your co-workers.” She paused and smiled at him. “You are who you are. The rest of it … it doesn’t matter.”
After she had walked away, Nick pushed Amelia to a chair in the arrival lounge and sat down, taking out his wallet. Opening it, he pulled out the only photograph he kept in there and looked intently at it, before realising that before it was too late, he needed to get Greg back.
