tanisafan to get it all done =)
Greg wasn’t entirely sure if he should be glad that ‘Blondie’ didn’t get him, or cry that it was Nick who did.
Nick on the other hand looked slightly irritated as well, and seemed lost, like he didn’t know what to do. He smiled at Greg shyly before Greg was guided back behind the stage.
“20.000$? Oh my god, who are you? Or even better, who is this guy? Someone you know?” Jonas wanted to know.
“Um…kinda. I know who he is, and…well…it’s not any of your business.” Greg brushed him off, leaving him to stand alone.
Right now he didn’t need this. Not now. He was just too confused to know anything at all. All he wanted to do at this very moment was to run away, maybe even leave town and not crossing Nick’s path ever again. This wasn’t good, not at all. And the fact that it seemed that Nick couldn’t let go of him after three months said a lot about into how much Greg had gotten himself.
He was about to look for a quiet place, somewhere where he could try to calm down and organize his thoughts again, when he bumped into someone shortly after he had found an exit to get outside.
“Sorry, I … I didn’t see you--“ he stuttered an apology.
“No, my fault,” he heard a familiar voice with a Texan drawl.
Lifting his head slightly, he got confirmation. Nick.
“Umm…I…” Greg started.
Nick smiled at Greg, still a bit insecure looking, but he also looked as if he had just found something he had been looking for his entire life, even though he didn’t say anything at all.
He just took a step forwards and pulled Greg in his arms. “Finally,” was all he said in the end, hugging Greg tighter.
Greg, who wasn’t sure how to respond exactly just let Nick hug him, too weak to fight him and he actually didn’t want to fight him either. It felt so good, these arms around him, caressing him one way or another.
When Nick finally let go of him after what seemed an eternity, Greg took a few steps back, looking at Nick.
“I…why did you do this?” he finally asked.
“Why did you just leave three months ago? And didn’t even take the money with you?”
“That’s why you are here? To ask me why I left, and why I didn’t take the money with me?”
“Greg, I…no. That’s not why I’m here. I was actually a guest but didn’t make it in time. Or actually…I did make it in time -- although were just a few seconds left. So…”
“Oh, yeah. I forgot. You got me, again. But for less money this time. Or now, wait…you paid 20.000$ for a single night. Last time I was worth 50.000$ for eight nights. What changed?”
“You left.”
Greg looked at Nick, unimpressed and wondering why he was actually angry. It was not Nick’s fault that he had left, or actually it was. He had fallen for him, badly, but knew it wouldn’t work out.
“Greg, I…”
“No… you paid 20.000$ so what do you want me to do now? I guess you are not looking for a date for your daughter, neither do you need a gardener. So…what is it you want me to do?”
“Maybe, for a start…talking? Is that okay with you?”
“You paid for me, so I definitely won’t turn it down. What do you wanna talk about?”
“Us.”
Greg rolled his eyes, but saw Nick walking towards a bench and finally sitting down. Greg followed him and did the same. Nick was facing him now, looking as if he was studying Greg.
“Why did you leave?”
Apparently Nick wasn’t wasting any time.
“You know why I left.”
“Okay, so...the week was over. But I offered you to stay longer. There was no need for you to go. But...more importantly…why didn’t you take the money with you?”
Greg turned away from Nick, not able to look at him.
“I didn’t want your money. It made me feel like ... I didn’t make me feel good.”
Suddenly he felt a strong hand cupping his chin, turning his head to meet Nick’s eyes.
“That is bullshit and you know it. There is another reason, and you know it. Yes, you didn’t want my money, but not because it made you feel bad.”
“Why does it matter now? What do you want from me? Why can’t you just let it go?” Greg pleaded.
“Because I don’t want to, and I know you don’t want to either. Why did you leave the check back on the kitchen table?”
There was nothing but silence from Greg, who was just shaking his head and wishing he would be anywhere but here.
“Greg, why? Tell me, please. Why didn’t you take the check?” Nick said, louder now, pleading as if the answer was more than just important to him.
“Why?” he said, grabbing Greg’s chin again and yanking his head around once more.
That was when he saw it. Greg’s eyes -- which pleaded. Pleaded not to force him to answer. But Nick couldn’t do anything else. He needed to know. Needed to hear it from Greg.
But again, Greg remained silent.
“Why?” Nick was yelling now, and Greg winced. He hadn’t seen Nick like that ever before and he was a bit scared now. He didn’t know that this one answer was so important to him.
“Because I fell for you,” he finally said, in a quiet whisper, almost unable to be heard.
“Were you scared and did you decide on running away?”
“No, this was the best thing for us.”
“And when did I get a say in that? Did it ever occur to you that maybe this was not the best thing? That if you had stayed….that would have been the best thing,” Nick explained, calmly now.
Greg felt tiny drops suddenly, and assumed that it wouldn’t take long before it would rain.
“Maybe we should go inside and talk about it there,” he said. He got up but was stopped by Nick’s hand around his wrist.
“No, we talk about it here. Now.” Nick said and guided Greg back down on the bench.
“It was for the best. Me leaving you.”
“Why? What was wrong with … staying?”
“Nick, I told you already. It wouldn’t have worked. I mean…you are Nick Stokes, millionaire and society’s darling, everyone loves you and you are on every cover of all sorts of magazines. And me? I’m a hooker, not very smart and probably just death for your reputation and your status in society.”
“You were smart enough to know what seems good for you .” Nick smiled mildly. “And you should be smart enough to let me decide what is good for me as well.”
Greg bit his lower lip, knowing that Nick was right.
“I’m old enough to decide what I want, ain’t I?” Nick asked, and Greg just nodded.
“And what do you want?” he asked.
“How about I start with you, and then we decide what else I want?” Nick smiled, leaning slowly closer. When their lips met, a thunder was to be heard in the sky and it suddenly started raining cats and dogs again, causing Nick and Greg to get soaking wet; but neither of them seemed to actually care. They were so lost in the kiss that they wouldn’t even have noticed anything at all.
When they pulled apart eventually, Greg’s hair stuck to his skull and Nick was reminded of that day when Greg was diving into his pool, and when coming back up he looked exactly the same.
Smiling about it, he pulled Greg up in his arms and towards the car. He had found his one person at some event where he didn’t actually want to be in the first place, but now was happy he went in the end.
They made their way to the car and Nick, being the gentleman that he was, opened the door for Greg, and waited til he was in before shutting it and getting in as well.
“So where are we going?” Greg asked, although he already suspected where they would go.
“Home,” Nick answered matter of factly.
