Summary: Nick finds out Greg told Mamma know then examines his father's disappointment in him. Set after Season 6.
Nick stood on the balcony looking out at the city as he waited for Greg to finish changing so they could go to dinner. He was glad Greg agreed to stay. He’d realized somewhere about halfway there how much he really did need this time away. Before Greg had started to become more than just a work buddy, the thought of leaving his home for anywhere other than work or sleeping anywhere other than the safety of his own bed had been too much to even consider. Yet here he was only days later in Reno nowhere near his bed and the panic and discomfort he would have felt before was nowhere in sight. Of course Reno would probably have not even been on his list of getaway ideas, but then if he’d been given a say in it from the start he probably would have insisted on going home to the ranch even though he didn’t really want to and that was most likely the last place he needed to be right then.
Regardless of what he heeded he would have gone anyway despite the tension he would have had to suffer through with his father who seemed to always be disappointed in him no matter what he did. When he’d said he was leaving Dallas for Vegas he’d been a disappointment. When he told him he was leaving the police force to become a CSI he’d been disappointed. When he’d told him it wasn’t a girl hiding in the shower when they’d surprised him with a visit at his apartment the day before graduating from A&M he’d been disappointed. When he’d told him he was going to study criminal justice and science in college instead of pre-law and going to law school he’d been disappointed. When he’d said he and Britney Sue Thibodeaux were going to see each other any more after graduation he’d been disappointed. When he’d come one touchdown short of the record his senior year he’d been disappointed. When he’d started crying at night before bedtime and needed a nightlight he’d been disappointed. All his life Nick’d been a disappointment to his father and each time he saw him he was only reminded of the fact that he always would be.
Unfortunately in Nick’s world there were some things that were stronger than wanting to avoid further evidence of his father’s feelings, namely Momma’s wishes and going home would have been what she wanted. As he thought his mother, Nick frowned wondering why she hadn’t insisted that they come to the ranch when Greg had told her of his plans. When he felt Greg’s arms slip around his waist and a kiss pressed to the back of his neck, Nick half turned still frowning. “Greg, did Momma tell you that she wanted us to go to the ranch?”
Greg’s lips twitched at the absurdity of the question. Of course his mother had wanted them to go to the ranch. In fact she’d pulled out every possible stop on the guilt trip highway that a mother knew and then came up with a couple more. “Of course she did, Nicky. She’s your mother and known you’re having a bad time of it. It’s natural that she want you where she can mother you.”
“So how did we end up in Reno?” Nick asked confused.
“I told her no,” Greg replied frankly and almost smiled at the shock on Nick’s face. “It isn’t like it’s the first time man. I tell her no all the time. If I thought that taking you home would have helped we would be there, but I know it isn’t. The last thing you need is to be at the ranch dealin’ with your dad and all his… issues. Then there’d be all the people around you constantly. I know they mean well, but you’d end up feeling smothered and when we left you’d be worse off than you are now. I told your mom when we thought you were ready and both of us could get time off together we’d come to the ranch.”
Nick opened his mouth stunned then closed it. He couldn’t believe Greg had told his momma no. No one told momma no, not even his father when his momma made her wishes known, you went along otherwise there was hell to pay. His mother could make the pope feel guilty for prayin’ on Sunday if she thought he should be doin somethin’ else.
“Nick, stop freakin’ out,” Greg said shaking his head grinning. “It’s ok. She isn’t going to yell or be mad. Her and I’ve gotten past all that already. Your mother isn’t an unreasonable person. I listened to her argument and then I calmly explained why I didn’t think you should be going home to the ranch right now.”
“Which was?” Nick gasped unable to imagine the argument he could have come up with that would convince his mother the public defender to back off.
Greg rolled his eyes before responding. “I told her that I didn’t like the way your father treated you. I explained that was sure he meant well and did not doubt that he loved you and thought he was doing what was best for you. Then I calmly and firmly told her I didn’t WANT to take you to the ranch so we weren’t going so there wasn’t much she could say to change my mind and I suggested that she accepted it.”
“But no one tells momma no!” Nick argued wide eyed and flabbergasted.
“Well I do. Now forget your mother and let’s go eat. I feel like steak.” Greg said firmly leaving no doubt that the conversation was over.
Nick followed Greg into the room then out of the suite., but his body was on auto pilot as he considered this concept. HE hadn’t been joking when he said that no one told his mother no. He was sure he’d never heard of anyone who dared such a thing before Greg.
“Stairs or elevator, Nicky?” Greg asked and Nick muttered elevator not really paying attention. HE didn’t come back to reality until he heard the elevator ding and felt Greg’s hand on his back urging him out.
His Greg had told momma no and even more surprising she seemed ok with it because she’d told him to have a good time without even the tiniest hint that she was upset or angry. In fact she’d encouraged him sounding like she really meant it. Never in his life had anyone stood up to one of his parents on his behalf. Being the youngest his siblings had always got a kick out of seeing him get into trouble especially when it was unjustly because one of them had actually committed the offense. Stopping Nick turned Greg around and crushed his mouth to the other man’s before he had a chance to speak.
His body hummed with jubilation as he pressed their bodies together closely feeling the sheer happiness running through is veins. All he could feel, all he could sense was this man in his arms. When he broke the kiss he simply pulled Greg in closer as laughter escaped… real genuine laughter. “I know I said it before G, but I knew it! I knew it. I knew you were the one!” He chanted as best as he could unable to explain further hoping Greg didn’t need him to.
“Don’t worry Nicky, from now on I’ll slay all your dragons,” Greg offered smiling softly knowing he meant it if for no reason that the sound of that laughter made everything else in their lives worth it. “Now come on before I starve to death!”
Pulling back Greg turned and taking Nick’s hand the two made their way through the hotel toward the restaurant. Once they’d reached their destination, Nick waited patiently while Greg put his name in the waiting list and when he returned happily accepted a kiss curling his fingers through Greg’s marveling at the peace he seemed to have found. Sensing Greg’s exhaustion from the long trip Nick easily accepted the silence that fell between them not needing constant chatter to make him feel wanted when he was getting so much open affection.
Nick found himself thinking about this public display that he was in the middle of. There was a time not to far back in his history when he would have freaked out at the mere thought of such a thing and wondered what had changed and when that had allowed him to feel so comfortable in a moment like this. He considered maybe it was the fact that he was somewhere that no one knew him, but he thought about being open like this with Greg anywhere else even back in Dallas and knew he wouldn’t react any differently. He realized that Greg had something to do with it. The confidence the younger man had seemed to be contagious because for the first time in a long time Nick almost felt like his old self even if he knew that his demons were still present waiting to resurface at some future point in time. This time though the thought of his demons didn’t frighten himself as much as he considered maybe he could face them… all of them even the ones he’d never told anyone not even Catherine about… knowing Greg would firmly be at his side.
He felt Greg’s hand begin to move idly up and down his arm and Nick found himself moving closet so that he could rest his head on the younger man’s shoulder comfortably as a loving cocoon seemed to wrap around him. Feeling as if he was being watched, Nick lifted his head and glanced around to find an older couple watching them. They didn’t appear to be quite as old as his parents, but seemed to be close enough that he was reminded of his Momma and the Judge.. The woman smiled softly at him as their eyes met and Nick began to miss his momma deciding to call her when they got back to the room. When his eyes moved to the man though Nick found himself shivering at the cold distaste he saw there.
“You cold, baby?” Greg asked softly unaware of the couple’s attention on them and Nick shook his head. He considered answering, but something held him back. He feared that if he mentioned it Greg would pull away and the loving affection he was giving him was something Nick desperately craved feeling for once like any other normal couple. Instead he burrowed closer to Greg glad when he found himself wrapped in the man’s embrace and returned his head to Greg’s shoulder. That look though wouldn’t leave his mind and soon his brain had transformed the stranger into his father, as Nick was sure he would get the same reaction from him.
Closing his eyes and inhaling Greg’s scent deeply, Nick imagined his father in the stranger’s shoes, the always present disappointment mixed in with the cold distaste. He waited for the intense pain to hit him as it always did when he realized that once again he’d let his father down.
As he turned all of this over in his head, Greg had begun stroking his back gently as he spoke softly in his ear murmuring words of love and comfort. All at once Nick felt sorry for his father, because he knew this thing that was growing between the two of them wasn’t some momentary fling. It was forever wrapped up in an eternity and Nick wasn’t going to feel bad about it because a sad old man who had never been proud of him a day in his life had problems with his choice of partners. To do so would be a disgrace to the love he was being given and so far Greg had shown he was more deserving of his respect and affection that his father ever had been. Hearing Greg’s name called Nick felt the kiss pressed to his forehead and let Greg pull away. Lifting his chin Nick glanced at the couple and wondered if the sparkle of pride in the woman’s eyes was real or his imagination.
After following the hostess to their table, Nick settled in smiling shyly as Greg pulled out his chair for him and waited helping him scoot up noting they’d been placed in the back of the restaurant but didn’t mind because that only meant that they just had more privacy refusing to question the girl’s intentions. The place was dimly lit with not much more than candlelight to see by, but he’d always been a sucker for romance so he felt that the atmosphere was perfect. It was only enhanced by this man who seemed intent on making the already perfect surroundings better as he reached across the table taking his hand as if it were the most natural thing in the world as he studied his menu.
After their orders had been placed Nick found himself staring into Greg’s tired eyes enjoying the silence once more. When Greg yawned he couldn’t help but chuckle squeezing Greg’s hand when he stuck out his tongue at him. “Nicky, I hope you don’t mind just hangin’ around the suite tonight. I don’t think that I could manage much else. I’ve never understood how a person can get so tired just sitting on their butt all day driving.”
“I could have helped,” Nick threw out feeling somewhat guilty, but Greg just wrinkled his nose at him. “Then I would’ve had to tell you where we were going and I don’t think my ego could have stood 10 hours of getting laughed at.
“Are you… Is it really that terrible that I brought you here?”
“G,” Nick started sighing as he fidgeted in his seat hoping he could find the right words to explain his faux pas. “I never thought it was horrible. You gotta admit it’s ad odd choice given where we live, but I’m sure it’s better than the ranch which is where we woulda ended up if I’da picked. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings like that. You’re doing so much for me. Sometimes I can actually imagine being myself again and not this scared person who can barely function on a daily basis.”
Greg waved a hand as if dismissing the pain now that he was past it. “I admit I was really mad at the time, but I think it was more from nerves and being tired than anything else. But, I promise I have some cool stuff planned and Monday we’re goin’ somewhere else ‘til Thursday ‘cause I promised Catherine we’d be back for shift on Saturday night. Umm… I hope you aren’t too mad that it’ll be awhile before we get any significant time off again, although she’s trying to work something out to made our days off jive better.”
Nick grinned at the mention of Catherine’s name realizing that she must be the other person who knew where they were. He’d been wondering but hadn’t had a chance to ask yet and thought she was the perfect choice. “Well I can’t wait to see what you have planned for us. You know though I gotta go home sooner or later as much as we both don’t wanna. Momma may have let you get away with it this time, and I am sincerely impressed with your skills, G, but I don’t think you will be able to put her off forever.”
Greg put a hand over his mouth to hide a grin amused that a man Nick’s age was still so intimidated by his mother. “When I talked to Catherine I had her check the holiday schedule. It seems that I had to work Thanksgiving and you had Christmas so I made a deal with her that we’d both work each of them if she’d give us off this little holiday in September that I have heard you rave about several times over the last I don’t wanna think ob how many years because you couldn’t go home to the family get together. Sooooooooooooooooo in trade for working the more popular holiday off time requested days we get a whole week to go to the ranch.”
Nick almost squealed he was so happy. Since his family was so big and everyone but him was married it was almost impossible to coordinate the traditional holidays, so they’d always had a big Labor Day weekend gathering with all of the siblings, spouses, and grandkids there. Only Nick had drawn that holiday to work for the last four years and never got to go.
“I take it you’re ok with that?” Greg asked grinning.
“Shaking his head Nick reached for the cell phone he’d stuffed into his pocket earlier out of habit even though it was off. “Could you get any more perfect, G?” Nick asked grinning as the blush covering said man’s cheeks became visible even in the dark.
Greg however didn’t comment and simply leaned back watching Nick through tired eyes as he talked animatedly with his mother hoping this would settle things and they could get past the telling her no issue. The last person he wanted to spend the weekend chatting about was Nick’s momma. He may love the woman to death, but Greg had plans and had no intentions of letting anything kill the mood.
