Summary: The boys take a break at a truck stop. What sets Greg off? Set after Season 6.
Greg tapped his hands on the steering wheel as he guided the car along the Interstate They’d compromised on a variety station that played a little bit of everything including country, nothing quite as hard as he used to play in the lab, but none of the extreme twang that Nick preferred to either so he could live with it. He had to admit that he was more than a little nervous. Nick’s mother assured him that her son would love all the plans he’d made, but Greg couldn’t help but question his decisions over and over until he found himself fighting with the notion of telling now or keeping it all a secret.
“Nick,” Greg said breaking the easy silence they’d been enjoying. Turning his head he saw Nick peering at him through heavy lids and he couldn’t help but smile softly his heart filling with love and he found himself reminded of why he was doing this. Nick looked almost peaceful. They were less than an hour into their almost 11 hour drive, but already Greg could almost see the tension easing out of his friend. “So I have decided now that we are on our way and might I say how damned impressed I am that you actually handed over the keys to your truth without arguing…. Anyway now that we are on our way that I will give you the choice of knowing where we’re going and what I have planned or being surprised.”
Nick’s lips curved into a sleepy smile as he burrowed further into his seat arranging the pillow he’d shoved between his head and the crevice between his seat and the side of the truck. “Nervous, G?”
Greg felt the blush spread across his cheeks and found himself nodding. “Yeah, I guess. I mean, most people would say what I have planned is a little… odd. I doubt anyone else would select the… things I have. And I know most people would have gone with a more conventional… I dunno country music weekend or something, but… well it didn’t even occur to me at least not until I got past the initial part of the trip. ” Greg shrugged turning his gaze firmly on the road telling himself it was because there could be traffic coming up and not because he was afraid of Nick’s reaction.
“G, I trust you and Momma already said I would enjoy it so I ain’t worried. I know I was kinda apprehensive at first, but I’m gettin’ used to it and to be honest the surprise is kinda nice. I don’t think anyone’s ever even thought to do something like this for me before. Besides non-conventional is one of those things that I like about you man, you don’t put me in a… in a box… you… you see me as a whole person not just some jock from Texas with important parents. I trust you, G. Right now you’re probably the only person that I trust this much.” Greg turned his head to smile at Nick again as he held out his hand letting their fingers twine together before watching the other man’s eyes close sending him into a peaceful sleep.

Missing the movement of the truck Nick opened his eyes and stretched as best as he could inside the cab. Sitting up he looked around outside and realized that they were at a truck stop and wondered where Greg was. Grabbing the keys out of the ignition, Nick got out taking the time for a real stretch before locking the doors and heading inside, his bladder telling him that he needed to take this opportunity to pay it some attention. As he stepped through the door he took off his sunglasses looking around easily spotting Greg who smiled at him from his spot across the building. One hip was resting against what appeared to be the condiment counter, his legs were crossed at the ankle and his arms were crossed across his chest, his sunglasses were perched up in his hair, and his whole demeanor radiated exhaustion. Pointing back to where the restrooms, Nick took off hoping Greg would understand.
When he came out he couldn’t help but chuckle noticing that Greg hadn’t moved, but as he got closer he noticed that his gaze was firmly trained on a bulge at the hip of one of the other customers covered by a thin jacket. Nervously Nick looked around glad to see that the area was relatively empty with Greg and the other man seeming to be the only customers on that side. If the trucker took offense to the attention Greg was paying to his concealed gun he hopefully would be the only one Nick would have to deal with. Shooting a worried look towards Greg, Nick turned his attention to the trucker noting her was larger than he was in both height and weight, but fortunately he was also several years older. He looked slightly annoyed, but didn’t appear as though he was ready to make a big deal about the situation just yet. Nick only hoped that it would stay that way.
The closer he got to Greg, the more obvious it was that this wasn’t some exhaustion inspired zoning out, this was fear and panic. Thinking back to the other day in his front room Nick began to realize just how badly guns scared his friend and wondered what possibly could have happened to Greg that affected him this badly. Glancing towards the trucker he saw understanding and sympathy in the older man’s eyes. “Order for Sanders,” the lady at the counter bellowed, but Greg didn’t so much as flinch and Nick ended up heading her way explaining that they were together as he took whatever it was Greg had ordered them before moving to his friend’s side. “G?” He asked carefully placing a hand on the younger man’s arm. Unfortunately Greg still jumped, his eyes wild as they darted around the room, a yelp escaping his lips.
“Greg, relax its just me,” Nick said speaking softly as he moved to stand between him and the trucker. “Food’s done. You ready?” Nick saw the confusion on Greg’s face and showed him the bag and watched a blush cover his friend’s cheeks. “Did you get us something to drink?”
Not speaking yet Greg nodded picking up two pops and a bag that appeared to contain water and Little Debbie cakes. Using his free hand Nick guided Greg out to the truck unlocking the doors before handing Greg the keys climbing in on the passenger’s side.
As soon as Greg was in the cab whatever had happened in the truck stop seemed to have passed as Greg bend over resting his forehead against the top of the steering wheel as his hands gripped the sides. “FUCK!”
Unsure what to say Nick settled himself in buckling his seatbelt waiting for Greg to speak. “I’m sorry Nicky,” he finally said his voice soft and quivering slightly. “Here I am supposed to be taking you away from everything and instead you end up having to… It’s stupid.”
“G, anything that scares you that much ain’t stupid, besides… you’ve helped me plenty lately. I thought we agreed I was gonna help you too?” Nick bit his lip then reached over putting a hand on Greg’s leg. “I know it sounds selfish, but… it was nice. I mean it felt like the old days ya know? Me and Greggo helping each other out.”
Greg turned his attention to Nick briefly before smiling realizing Nick was right. It did feel like the old days and suddenly Greg didn’t feel so ashamed about being scared.

I don't know how happy I am with this chapter, but hopefully the next one will be better.
