Title: One of These Days (1/?)
A/N: Idea came from
xkacie’s wishlist.
Rating: PG
I didn't notice
But I didn't care
I tried being honest
But that lead me nowhere
I watched the station
Saw the bus pulling through
And I don't mind saying
A part of me left with you
Nick knew he and Greg were drifting apart and he tried every possible way to try to stop it but he always failed. Failing was not an option.
Maybe it was because of the new shift changes. Maybe it was the fact that Greg had become so wrapped in the whole Lab Tech to CSI deal. Maybe, and Nick prayed this wasn’t the answer; just maybe the two of them were falling out of love.
And then Nick heard the door slam and he knew Greg was home. He then too heard the sound of car keys hitting the table, refrigerator opening, a chair being moved and then the faint sound of a television.
Nick pulled the covers off himself and climbed out of bed before pulling open the bedroom door and walking down the hallway. When he reached where the wall met the kitchen he stopped just to watch Greg. He watched as Greg lay on the couch, remote in hand as he switched from channel to channel.
Nick was tempted to go over and say something but his feet just wouldn’t move. Instead, he leaned against the wall and sighed. Where the two of them really falling out of love?
“Damn,” Greg swore, as he turned off the television and tossed the remote to the floor. “I hate being up at this hour. Nothing good is ever on.” He complained, peeling himself off of the couch and stretching. It was then when he stretched did he realize Nick was there.
Nick was watching him.
“Did I wake you up?” Greg asked, as he grabbed his coffee cup and walked towards the counter.
“No, I was already up.” Nick replied before following Greg.
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
Things were beginning to get uncomfortable.
“So, how was work?” Nick asked, trying to squeeze any type of conversation out of Greg.
“You know how it is. You work there too.” Greg answered coolly, placing his dirty coffee cup in the dishwasher.
Nick crossed his arms over his chest. “G, do you love me anymore?”
“What?” Greg asked quickly, eyes darting over to Nick.
“It’s not a tough question. Do you love me or not?”
Greg’s hands began to shake as he grabbed the back of the chair for support. His knees had suddenly felt like Jell-O.
Nick took the forever silence as a no and he turned around so sharply that he had almost tripped over his own foot. He didn’t need this. “G’night.” He said, voice hollow as he stepped out of the kitchen and towards their...no, his bedroom.
Greg didn’t love him anymore and Nick didn’t know why.
Falling onto the bed, Nick dug his head into his pillow and mentally kicked himself for even getting up in the first place. He shouldn’t have even bothered to try and even talk to Greg. He should have just stayed where he was in bed and wait.
After twenty-minutes of staying up of waiting for Greg to come into the bedroom and explain everything to Nick (hopefully to say it was all a prank), Nick realized that Greg wasn’t coming in. Greg probably would spend another night on the couch.
Heart-broken, Nick fell asleep.
--
When Nick awoke the next day, Greg was no where to be found. The only thing that Greg had left behind was a note.
Picking it up, Nick read it;
Nick,
You asked me if I loved you and I’m telling you the truth, I truly don’t know. I did at one point but now I’m just not sure. I’m not even sure if I can face you anymore.
I would like to explain more but I got called back in for work. Triple-homicide. I left some coffee in the canister when you get up.
From,
Greg
Nick stared at the letter for what seemed forever until hastily crunching it up in his hands and tossing it to the garbage.
From, Greg.
And then Nick knew that the both of them, not just Greg, had fallen out of love.
TBC?
I’m not sure if I should continue, even though I think it would be more angst and fun, but you guys can tell me. :D
