Some People Wait a Lifetime
Jun. 13th, 2005 07:45 pmThis is my first time posting a story here, and it's also my first Nick/Greg fic. I set up my own lj to post it, but it was suggested that I posted it over here too. I'm a little nervous, but here it is. It's another response to the songfic challenge at TalkCSI.

Summary: Nick lets Greg know about his feelings for him.
Nick couldn't remember ever being any happier than he was at this moment. Sighing contentedly, he lay back in his lounge chair sipping on a margarita. In front of him lay a large expanse of beach with the crystal blue ocean behind it. He watched as the sun set in the horizon creating a brilliant mixture of orange, pink and blue. He thought to himself that it was the most beautiful thing that he'd ever seen. Well, second most beautiful. Smiling, he looked over at the spiky haired young man at the lounge chair beside him. The light from the sunset brought out the blond highlights in his hair. As he lay sleeping, his chest rose and fell gently like the waves against the shore. Just as he debated whether to wake the other man to share in the sunset, brown eyes opened to look into his.
"Hey," Greg said to him with a smile.
"Hey, yourself. You woke up just in time for the sunset," he replied talking hold of the other's hand.
Turning around to look, they held hands and sat quietly for a few moments enjoying the evening.
"Let's go for a walk," Greg said as he stood up still holding his new lovers hand.
As Nick stood up, they wrapped their arms around each others waists and slowly walked down the beach.
"I'm so glad that we did this," Nick said.
"I'm glad that you finally let me know how you felt," Greg said laying his head on Nick's shoulder.
"Me too," Nick said as he thought back to the previous day.
*****
Nick and Greg had both been chosen to represent the Las Vegas Crime Lab at the annual convention held in Hawaii. Nick had wanted to go for years, and was thrilled when his turn came up. Sara was supposed to go too, but had to back out due to illness at the last moment. Grissom decided that it might be a good learning experience for Greg, and picked him to fill in.
Nick couldn't help but smile at Greg's enthusiasm.
"Come on, we're gonna be late!" Greg yelled behind him as ran towards the gate, his backpack on his shoulder.
Nick just shook his head, picked up his carryon bag from the x-ray, and walked towards the gate. Greg was already on the plane joking with a flight attendant by the time Nick made it onto the plane. 'He has a way to charm just about anyone,' Nick thought to himself, 'including me'.
"Hey, what took you so long?" Greg teasingly asked as Nick took his seat next to him.
"We've still got a few minutes until takeoff, Greggo."
Greg just rolled his eyes, "Well I'm just anxious to get to some serious surfing."
"It's going to be dark by the time we get there, and in the morning we have a seminar at 8."
"You mean, you actually plan on GOING to that?!" Greg asked incredulously.
"Of course. The lab is paying for us to attend."
"I bet you never skipped a day of school, did you?"
"No, why?" Nick asked, turning to look at him as Greg started laughing to himself.
"I think we're going to have to get you loosened up some."
The flight itself went pretty quickly. Greg pulled out his headphones shortly after take off, and sat listening to music most of the trip. Nick read for a while before getting some sleep. As he dozed in and out, he could hear Greg singing softly to himself:
What if I told you it was all meant to be?
Would you believe me? Would you agree?
It's almost that feeling that we've met before
So tell me that you don't think I'm crazy
when I tell you love has come here and now
A moment like this
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this
Some people search forever for that one special kiss
Oh I can't believe it's happening to me
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this
He looked over at Greg who had his head back with his eyes closed, lips moving softly. Nick wished he was brave enough to say those words to the man beside him. He'd realized a long time ago that he felt something for Greg, but was never brave enough to put it into words. Besides, Greg was always flirting with all the women at the lab. There was no way that he'd be interested in him. Suddenly, Greg looked over at him as though he felt someone watching him, and smiled at Nick. Nick quickly turned away, afraid that Greg would be able to read the thoughts in his mind. He spent the rest of the trip pretending to sleep, and daydreaming of what would probably never be.
"Nick?....Nick!"
Nick jumped up in his seat, "What?"
"We've landed, and just about everyone else is already off the plane"
"Oh." After rubbing his eyes, he grabbed his bag from above the seat and again found himself trying to keep up with Greg.
It didn't take long to get to their hotel and checked in once they deplaned. They were in adjoining rooms, both with great views of the ocean. Or so they were told. It was nearly 11pm and too late to actually see the ocean or much of anything.
"I can't believe that you're planning on going out," Nick yelled at Greg through the door linking the two rooms," He was unpacking his suitcase and setting his clothes out for the next morning, as Greg's head popped through the door.
"I can't believe you're already getting ready for bed. I mean, come ON, we're in Hawaii. Go out with me."
As tempted as he was to spend the evening out, he had to say no, "Sorry, Greggo, but I need to get some sleep before the seminar"
"Well if you change your mind, I'll be at the bar downstairs."
With that, Greg was gone. Nick looked at the door wishing that he could bring himself to go after Greg. In more ways than one.
*****
Early the next morning, Nick was surprised to find Greg already up and ready to go to the seminar. He could hear him humming some non-descript tune to himself, and he stuck his head through the door to see Greg working at getting his hair just right.
“Greggo? I thought you were going to blow off the seminar?
“Yeah, I was, but figured they might actually have some interesting topics that I might not already know,” Greg said grinning at him in the mirror.
A few minutes later, they were on their way to the conference center and found a place to settle in. But after a few hours, Nick was starting to think that Greg was right to want to skip this. Most of the topics were things that he already was very well informed about. He looked over to Greg who looked about as bored as he was. Turning, Greg rolled his eyes at him and leaned over.
“Wanna blow this joint, and hit the beach?”
Nick just nodded as the two of them left as inconspicuously as possible.
*****
The two headed back to the room and changed into their swim trunks before heading to the beach. It was a beautiful day, and Nick was glad that he decided to play hooky. He took in a deep breath, smelling the salt water while finding a spot on the beach. As he stretched his towel out on the sand,
"So have you ever been surfing before?" Greg asked as he lay his towel down next to Nick's.
"Never."
"Well there's a first time for everything," he replied mischievously, "come on."
Nick apprehensively followed Greg to the rental shop, and let him pick out a couple of surfboards and attempt to give Nick a crash course on the basics of surfing. The word 'crash' being key.
"I'm not so sure about this, Greg," he said standing on the board on the beach.
"Oh come on, I just want you to get the feel of the board. It's not like I'm gonna make you take on the big waves today. It's all about the balance," Greg said putting his hands on Nick's waist.
Nick sucked in a sharp breath as he felt Greg's hands on him.
"Look, Greggo," he said as he moved away, "why don't you go out there and show me how it's done? I'll just stay here and take notes." He smiled at him, praying that he hadn't noticed his reaction a moment ago.
“Just try it in the water. We don’t even have to go out more than a few feet.”
As he looked into those big brown eyes, he couldn’t refuse him, and they carried the boards across to the sand. Greg laid his board down and told Nick to just try balancing again. It was going fine until a large wave came in catching him off guard. Nick found himself face down on top of Greg in the sand. His heart begin to beat faster, and he tried to catch his breath as he felt Greg moving below him. He closed his eyes to shake off the images that came to his mind. He knew that Greg couldn’t possibly feel the same way about him that he felt about Greg. He quickly rolled off.
“I don’t think I’m going to quite get this whole surfing thing,” Nick started backing away towards the hotel, “I’m going to just go and grab a quick nap.” Turning, he walked as quickly as he could without actually running leaving Greg to stare after him.
*****
Getting back to the room, he just sat on the bed thinking about what a fool he must have looked like. ‘Greg must think I’m an idiot,’ Nick thought to himself. Sighing, he leaned against the patio door and looked at the view, trying to forget, until he heard the door open in the next room.
“Nick, is there something wrong?” Greg asked walking into the room.
“No nothing,” he said, not looking back as Greg walked up behind him. He tensed as Greg took hold of his arm and turned him around to look him in the eyes.
“You felt something, didn’t you?”
“I..uh..don’t know what you mean,” Nick stammered, but resisted the urge to pull away.
“Oh I think that you do,”
“Okay! I felt something. I’ve felt something for a long time, but…”
”But what?”
“I knew that you wouldn’t feel the same. I mean, you’re always flirting with all the women at work,” Nick said turning away again to look out the view through the window.
“I flirt with you too, or hadn’t you noticed?” Greg said moving up behind Nick; putting his hands on his arms.
“I thought that I was just hoping for too much; that I was misreading the signs.”
“You weren’t misreading anything,” Greg said softly, leaning in to kiss the back of Nick’s neck. His lips moved up to brush against his cheek, and he slowly turned Nick around looking him in his shocked eyes before leaning in to kiss him. Nick just stood there for a moment before returning the kiss, deepening it until they were both out of breath.
“I never expected this to actually happen,” Nick said looking at Greg, the shock replaced by desire. He ran his fingers through his hair as he leaned in to kiss him again.
“I did,” Greg said softly as Nick’s lips brushed against his.
The rest of the evening and well into the next afternoon were spent in the room; the new lovers getting to know each other more intimately. The seminar long forgotten, the two finally decided to venture out to the beach again. Finding a nice secluded spot, they settled in to watch the sunset together.
*****
Nick was brought back to the present as the sun dropped just below the horizon. In the distance, he could hear music playing.
Everything changes but beauty remains
Something so tender I can't explain
I may be dreaming but until I awake
Can't we make this dream last forever?
And I'll cherish all the love we share
He pulled Greg against his body, the two of them kissing tenderly with the surrounding palm trees waving gently in the wind.
A moment like this
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this
Some people search forever for that one special kiss
Oh I can't believe it's happening to me
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this
Could this be the greatest love of all?
I wanna know that you will catch me when I fall
So let me tell you this...
And the music played on as Nick slowly opened his eyes. Sadly, he looked around his bedroom, and he leaned over to the alarm clock,
A moment like this
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this
Some people search forever for that one special kiss
Oh I can't believe it's happening to me
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this
Could this be the greatest love of all?
I wanna know that you will catch me when I fall
So let me tell you this...
He turned the radio off, and lay back in his empty bed staring at the ceiling thinking about what would probably never be.
