Notes: Because I'm bored and I thought people's reactions to the end of Shame were funny.
Correlated Evidence
What people didn’t understand was that he’d spent so long watching people and trying to understand them that he’d actually become quite the master. That he could pick up small nonverbal cues, discern patterns in conversational topics, read signals against the background noise of normal social interactions.
He’d done that with Greg, tracking his mood swings and noticing their correlation to his relationship with Nick. They tried to keep it hidden, and Gil was certain it had worked on Catherine, Sara, and Warrick, but they were no match for a master. As always, it was small pieces of evidence that people never realized they were leaving. He gathered and analyzed them with as much care as he would physical evidence.
Gil had learned he could predict Greg’s mood for a shift based on whether or not he went looking for Nick immediately on coming in, on whether or not he held his head up or watched the floor as he walked around right after finding him. On nights when Greg let his head drop, he’d be sullen all shift and it would be difficult on Sara as she watched him mope about. But nights when Greg looked up, those were the nights Gil truly dreaded, nights when Greg would chatter incessantly about nothing, interrupting any carefully orchestrated train of thought one had running. Nights when Greg would play his music loudly on the way to a scene, bouncing to the beat of some incomprehensible band with an incomprehensible name. Nights when Greg looked like he might start dancing while collecting evidence, nearly destroying it in the process. Gil cringed in anticipation every time.
What people didn’t understand was that sometimes it was a real pain in the ass to know everything. You got to see your doom all too clearly.

Date: 2005-06-07 07:41 pm (UTC)And we all know Grissom would be the first to know, probably even before Greg and Nick.
Very nice.

Date: 2005-06-08 05:46 pm (UTC)I like stories with another character's POV on Nick and Greg's relationship. Great job.
