Summertime, and season 10 has ended. We know what we'll be doing (waiting for season 11 to start, of course!), but what will Nick and Greg be doing this summer? Time for another comment fic/art meme! Welcome to the summer/ vacation edition!

How does it work?

* Comment to this post with a prompt. Your prompts can be as short or as detailed as you’d like.

What is allowed?

For a few moments, a few terrifying gut wrenching moments, Greg can’t breathe. As soon as Nick hits the floor and he sees the blood his heart stops and the world slows. Nick’s body is lifeless, his gun just out of reach and a small pool of blood is quickly gathering around the shoulder of his vest. Crouched behind the table, Greg wants to crawl over to Nick and hold him close, but for various reasons he cannot. One, because he seems to be frozen to the spot with terror and two, he’s got a feeling this maniac isn’t so gay friendly. There’s an elderly man next to him dying, in agonising pain and every second of Greg’s training is telling him to tend to the man, to use his radio and reason with the killer behind the door. But without Nick, without his reassuring looks and casual touches Greg feels totally stripped down, bare and naked like an inexperienced rookie.

Suddenly, Nick moves. His hand twitches and his eyes flutter open, slowly. He looks at Greg, stares at him and with that look lets him know that he’s ok, that everything’s going to be ok.

Finally, Greg can breathe.

Greg waits for Langston to leave, skulking behind the waiting room doors until he’s sure he’s gone and Nick is alone. He creeps back on to the ward and up to Nick’s bed. Nick’s still lay there under the thin blankets, staring off in the other direction with a distant look on his face. When he hears footsteps, he turns and smiles at Greg. “Hey, you,” he says quietly. Greg moves almost nervously and runs his fingertips over Nick’s good hand. He squeezes his fingers loosely. “What’s the matter?” Nick asks, concerned.

“I thought I’d lost you,” Greg whispers, “again.”

Nick sighs. “Come on now, Greggo, don’t think like that,” he says, pressing his palm against Greg’s waist with their still entangled fingers.

“I can’t help it,” Greg explains. “Nick, you are so important to me. You’re practically my whole world and I can’t ever let you go.”

Nick sinks his head in to his pillow, closes his eyes for a second and then opens them again. “So don’t,” he whispers.

Greg leans close and cups the side of Nick’s face. “Marry me,” he murmurs.

Nick’s eyes are wide, shocked and excited. He grips Greg’s t-shirt as tight as he possibly can. “I’d love to,” he replies.

Once again, Nick had to be the hero. Once again, Greg fretted that he would one day wake up with Nick no longer in his life. Unrequited love was difficult, it hurt, but not nearly as much as the pain of never again seeing the person you love more than life itself. At least the way things were Greg knew that he would see Nick, could touch him casually on the shoulder, offer him a smile of encouragement or a cup of Blue Hawaiian when the pressures of the job seemed unbearable. When you're dead, none of that matters because you are gone and you're never coming back.

Greg wasn't sure about the afterlife, but he was fairly confident it didn't exist, so when he climbed into bed alone that night he struggled to breathe knowing that he had almost lost Nick that day. As he drifted off to sleep, he thought he heard a voice coming from the shadows in the corner of his room. It caused him to jump, caused his heart to race in trepidation. Reaching for the light, he looked over to see a silhouette in the glow of the fish tank, eerily out of place and glowing ethereally. "Warrick?"

Greg knew he must be dreaming, because only in dreams do ghosts appear (that and the ghostly green light was just a bit too much for his scientific mind to handle). "You're not here. Your dead."

"Dude, turn on the light."

Greg did as he was told and the ghost or whatever it was still stood there, only it wasn't green anymore, and it was definitely Warrick.

"What the..." was all Greg could think of to say to an apparition that had now firmly ensconced itself in his chair.

"Glad to see something leaves you speechless" Warrick laughed heartily. "To answer your question: Ghost - yes. Here - yes. Don't ask how or why and stay shut up for because I only get a few minutes to say what I need to say."

Greg just nodded.

"Dead isn't so bad, but it's still dead, dude. We'll see each other again, but it won't be the same. There's too much to live for in this life, and if you throw away your chances at happiness then that's all on you, but when you throw them away for my best friend without ever giving him a chance to find his own happiness, well that matters to me. Nick loves you, man. He always has, from the moment he met you. He's just to chicken-shit to tell you, too afraid you'll reject him, too afraid everyone will reject him. And right now, he's lying there all alone in that hospital room when he doesn't have to be. One of you has to gain some balls in this relationship. EW, I can't believe I said that, but man just do something about it, OK? Pick up the phone. Tell him. Or one day you will have to live with the regret."

Greg found his voice. "How do you know? What if he rejects me?"

"That's what life is all about, Greg. Taking chances." and with that, he was gone. Greg sat for a moment, rubbed his eyes, pondered whether or not what he had seen was real. And then he took a chance. He picked up the phone and dialed a number, one that he knew from memory, and in a hospital room in the middle of Vegas a tired but hopeful voice answered.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Nick."

"Hey, G. You OK?"

"Yeah. Listen, I just called to tell you.....I love you."

The silence on the line was unbearable, but there was no tell-tale click of disconnect. Rather, the first sound Greg heard were the sounds of soft but steady tears and then a choked voice proclaimed "I love you, too, G. I love you, too."
