Date: 2010-02-12 08:10 pm (UTC)“I like it,” Nick announces. “It’s peaceful, walking in the snow.”
“Yeah, until you fall on your ass,” Greg snorts. Nick slips his hand in to Greg’s and squeezes it tight.
“I won’t let you fall,” he says and Greg slowly stops walking. He looks down at their hands and smiles.
“You promise?” Nick pulls him closer, wrapping an arm around the waist of Greg’s green duffel coat until they’re only about sixteen layers of clothing away from being chest to chest. Greg’s smile is small and childish and it makes Nick lean down and kiss him, soft and steady, cold lips against cold lips over and over again until they’re some what warm. Nick’s tongue is cold but sweet tasting and Greg sucks on it a little, wishing they could stand there longer, just like this. After a few more quick pecks Nick pulls away and kisses Greg’s forehead.
“I promise,” he whispers.

Date: 2010-02-16 04:00 am (UTC)It wasn't that he hated the black-out even. He loved nature, and a day removed from the allure of technology was always welcome in his house.
Just not that day.
A whole Valentine's Day dinner... down the drain. No oven, no microwave, no blender and -- ironically enough -- no snow-cone maker. There wasn't even enough snow on the ground to actually make a snow-cone.
It wasn't that he was a whiner, nor that he was inflexible. But he'd had the whole night planned out, down to the divine pecan pie he knew could make up for the absence of Greg's favorite Krumkake.
And now there was no dessert. No dinner and no dessert.
He sighed -- but then he saw it.
Or remembered it.
A Valentine's Day gift from Catherine stuffed haphazardly into his backpack the night before. Hershey's chocolate. Milk chocolate. The good kind.
Marshmallows for hot cocoa lined the righthand cabinet, and he carefully brought them down. Next, graham crackers.
Sans what would no doubt have been a world-class gourmet Valentine's Day romantic dinner, he lit a candle.
When Greg got home an hour later, exhausted from the last double and temporarily unaware of the holiday at hand, s'mores, shared over the light of a candle, were the perfect Valentine's Day dinner.
Because it was better to light a candle than to curse the darkness, and because Greg's beaming face was, in spite of the melted chocolate and graham cracker crumbs smeared all over it, enough to brighten up the dark, snowy night.

Date: 2010-02-16 05:14 am (UTC)Catherine sighed, looking out over the Lab hallway.
A family Valentine's Day. Why in the world had she agreed to do this?
Oh. Right.
Lindsey.
Her mother -- player that she was -- of course had a date on Valentine's Day. And Lindsey had a date on Valentine's Day.
Her daughter seemed to think that Catherine wasn't letting her go to some college party with Trevor out of spite -- that Catherine was a lonely, bitter old woman jealous of her daughter, and now mother's, better luck in the romance department, and that that had to be the reason for the teenager's lack of Valentine's Day escapades. That it couldn't possibly be the fact that Trevor had two nose rings, three eyebrow piercings, five other facial piercings and one, allegedly, in a very inappropriate place, or that he refused to pronounce his consonants, wore his hat backwards, smoked cigarettes -- fruit-flavored no less -- and was expelled from Butterfield Academy for graffiti-ing Lindsey's name not once, but three times, onto the school walls. Which Lindsey took as a compliment and as an incredibly romantic gesture. Despite the fact that he had misspelled it as LinZ, Linnzy and Lindsay, respectively.
Catherine shook her head and tried to zone out the sound of teenage angst, those days manifesting themselves in the joyful tones of emo rock.
Catherine couldn't wait for a new decade. Oh no, she realized. It already is one. I guess this means that some things never change.
filled, pt 2?
Date: 2010-02-16 05:14 am (UTC)"Wendy and Hodges?" Catherine replied in horror. "Hodges is slightly less mature than your, well, whatever he is."
"No!" Lindsey replied -- louder (of course) than necessary, somehow managing to huff in the process. Catherine was tempted to hide her head in shame. Her Lab -- her shift, and her daughter was already showing her up.
"Hi Cath," Greg said, his grin wide enough that Catherine wanted to slap it off but kind enough that she didn't actually do so.
"Well, you seem happy," Greg said, smile still not fading.
A few feet to Greg's right, Nick, lips pressed tightly in a clear attempt at restraining laughter, nodded to Catherine and Lindsey. "Let's go, Greggo." His hand wavered a few inches above Greg's waist, ready to usher the younger man on.
"See!" Lindsey exclaimed once again, prompting Catherine to almost cover her ears and stopping Nick and Greg mid-step from their journey out the door. "They get to do Valentine's Day! All the old people get to do Valentine's Day!"
Catherine blanched. Since when were Nick and Greg old? Wait! Since when did they have dates for Valentine's Day?! They were on-shift. Her shift. And how the heck would Lindsey know what they were doing? That settled it then. The teenager was clearly pulling lies out of thin air -- just a battle tactic. Clearly.
She looked up at the two men. She expected to see amused, or at least confounded expressions. Seeing as Lindsey clearly didn't know what she was talking about. Instead, they had paled as much as Catherine.
"Lindsey..." Nick and Greg... "What are you talking about?" Catherine asked slowly.
The teenager responded only with a smirk, half-directed at Catherine and half at the men.
Catherine glared. Unfortunately, her daughter knew that trick. Useless.
"Nick and Greg are on shift," Catherine said, trading glances at the young men, whose faces, she noticed, remained pale. "You can tell they don't have dates with them. See, they're not dressed for dates..." She looked a little more closely at the two men. A little more clean-shaven. Slightly nicer, and matching button-down shirts, Nick's a little too tight and Greg's a little too loose. Nick's was striped and familiar looking, Greg's with a slightly Western, plaid design. But Greg's the one who always wears stripes...
Catherine squinted more closely. She shifted suspiciously to look at both her CSIs and her daughter.
"See," Lindsey said defiantly -- and more than a bit smugly. "They're like all the other old people -- just like Grandma and her latest boy toy."
All three adults winced.
"Okay," Lindsey said, reconsidering. "Never mind. They're more like a couple of old married people than Grandma and her..." She hesitated. "Boyfriend." She reconsidered. "They're more..." She tilted her head. "Boring."
Nick's expression was restrained; Greg's inscrutable.
Lindsey took a step but first tilted her head again and grinned. It was a wide, mischievous grin, one Catherine knew all too well.
"Nice hickey," she said to Nick. Nick blinked and said nothing, his expression still deliberately blank, except for a nervously twitching eye. Catherine could see he was biting his lip. And -- now -- she could see Greg's hand clenching his.
At that moment, a new presence made itself known in the Lab hallway. Trevor, hair shone, piercings gone, and, best of all, a bouquet of flowers with Lindsey's name spelled correctly on the accompanying card, stood waiting nervously.
"You go ahead," Catherine motioned quickly, quite ready to give up that battle. Lindsey, still smug, walked toward her boyfriend. Much to Catherine's relief. Today was a day for watching the Love, not watching her daughter. And goodness, there was so much that she needed to watch for.

Filled: Annual Valentine's Day Ball, PG, Part 1
Date: 2010-02-16 01:21 pm (UTC)Not beta'ed. I'M SO SORRY!
---
So. The Annual Valentine's Ball. Nobody in the office was actually sure anymore who came up with the idea first, but over the years it had morphed into a tradition. And in a way, it was nice to give in to the cheesy music and decorations, paper hearts flying around everywhere and people having a smile on their faces while drinking ruby red punch.
This year, however? Was definitely new. LVPD's theme for the evening, in a fit of promoting equality or polishing up their image or whatever the hell else they had thought they'd accomplish with this, had turned the whole thing into a rainbow parade. Granted, it had its amusement value to see Brass waltzing around with Vartann while trying to decide who of them should lead and in the process stomping on each other's feet every few seconds. And nobody could take their eyes off Catherine when she grabbed Wendy's hands and the two of them fit themselves together like two puzzle pieces, grinding against each other to a slow tune.
Greg was the first to promote equality, especially when it came to the issue of who you loved. It was nobody's damn business and you shouldn't be forced to hide it. They were living in the 21st century, after all.
He had not, however, reckoned with the force that was Nick Stokes. Greg still couldn't believe he'd done it. Well, apparently nobody could believe Nick Stokes had gone and grabbed Greg Sanders to dance with him to Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable". At first Greg had been insecure and awkward, not quite sure where to put his hands, but when Nick guided him safely through the first few slow steps, his hand sure and gentle in the small of Greg's back, he'd started to relax and actually got into it. He even stopped thinking about all of LVPD watching them while they slow-danced around the room and just enjoyed the body contact. Hey, it was still Nick, Greg would be pretty stupid not to enjoy that.
To be fair, people stopped staring pretty quickly, and nobody gave them odd looks when the song ended and they went their separate ways. Still, when Greg got home that night, he was still reeling from Nick's gesture and thought back to what had transpired after their dance, trying to figure out if it was true that nobody had given a damn or if that had been his wishful thinking.
His musings were interrupted when music started behind him, quickly followed by a hand on his shoulder turning him around. When Greg recognized the song, he gave Nick an incredulous look. The other man just beamed at him and asked, "May I have this dance?"
Filled: Annual Valentine's Day Ball, PG, Part 2
Date: 2010-02-16 01:21 pm (UTC)More out of reflex than real intention did Greg slide into Nick's arms. "Haven't you danced enough for one night?" he inquired but Nick just continued grinning, slid his hand down Greg's back and suddenly put it on Greg's ass to pull him closer. Then they started moving and Nick crooned, "At last..."
Greg couldn't help himself; threw his head back and laughed.
"My love has come along," Nick continued singing slightly off-tune while guiding Greg around the living room, as easy and comfortable as he'd been in front of all their colleagues who didn't have a clue that they'd been partners for several years at this point.
Not that he and Nick gave them much clues.
"My lonely days are over," Nick sang quietly into Greg's ear. "And life is like a song."
"You? Are insane," Greg finally replied, grinning like a fool. Nick's head moved back to look at Greg. He was still grinning, but now his tongue poked out a bit, teasing Greg as always.
"You love me."
"Never said I didn't," Greg replied, "but you're still insane."
Nick shrugged, guiding Greg through a couple of dance steps before he replied, "Thought it was time to test the waters. Figured it'd be the best opportunity."
Greg grew serious in an instant. They'd of course talked about coming out to their colleagues, several times actually. They just never thought the time was right, so they'd put it off again and again. It didn't help that both of them were slightly scared about their colleagues' reactions, though Greg was pretty sure that nobody would be surprised about him. Nick? Was a completely different matter.
"You want to go public?" Greg asked, his hand sliding soothingly up and down Nick's back. Nick shrugged again, spinning Greg around slowly while Etta James continued to croon in the background.
"Thought about it. Haven't come to a definite decision though." He paused, then asked carefully, "What do you think?"
Greg considered it for a second before he leaned forward and brushed his lips against Nick's. "I think it's time," he murmured and pressed another kiss against Nick's mouth.
Nick responded for a second, then Greg felt him smile against his lips. That was all the warning he got before Nick's grip on him changed. The next thing he knew he was looking at the ceiling, Nick hovering over him while his hand rested strong and sure against Greg's back. It only lasted a few seconds before Nick put him back on his feet. Greg stared at him, incredulous.
"Did you just dip me?"
"Sure did," Nick replied, Texan drawl in full swing. And then Nick was swirling them around, over and over again, and Greg clung to Nick's shoulders, laughing about Nick's obvious joy. They came to an abrupt standstill, Nick staring at Greg. Then he pushed him backwards until Greg's back collided with the wall. Next thing he knew, Nick leaned forward and his tongue slid between Greg's lips, claiming him in a passionate and yet oh-so familiar kiss. Greg's hand grabbed Nick's neck, returning the kiss with just as much enthusiasm. They split after a few moments, panting against each other's lips. Nick's forehead pressed against Greg's, he whispered, "Let's celebrate this day properly, okay?"
"Thought you'd never ask!" Greg replied, grabbed Nick's hand to tug him down the hall to their bedroom and closed the door on the last notes of their song.
Happy Valentine's Day indeed.

Nick was never a huge fan of candy, and if he had a choice; he wouldn't be eating them now. However, it's very hard for him to say no to Greg, when he's offering to share a big bag of those candy hearts with that beautiful smile the older man grew to love.
Ever now and then they'll share what the candy had written on it, some amusing, while others just caused Greg to look at Nick with a light blush. He never knew the younger man could be so bashful, but to him it was very cute.
Nick looked at the candy heart he pulled from the bag and looked over at Greg, then moved the candy so Greg could see what he got, "Mine says 'Kiss Me'." The younger man looked at Nick with somewhat of a surprise look, then before they both knew it; they were kissing.
Nick can now see himself enjoying candy now, especially those candy hearts.
