Do you remember how I started this story way back when? Probably not. Let me refresh your memory.

Nick Stokes loved Greg Sanders. There was no doubt about that. However, Nick Stokes could and probably would go bald trying to live day to day with Greg Sanders. Today was one of those days.

Yep, we’ve got to ‘THE DAY’.

Maybe if Nick had gotten even the faintest hint that his lover was not satisfied with their current arrangement he might not have been so surprised but their life had been so close to perfection for the last few months, he was blind-sided.

Take today for example; they had both gotten off work almost on time for a change. They had both closed big cases they had been working on for a while. Greg had been with Grissom on a nasty series of home invasions that had been getting increasingly violent and Nick had been working with Riley on what they thought was a gang related shooting but actually turned out to be a dispute over drug territories.

They grabbed some pastries on the way home, had a light meal and went to bed. They intended to sleep for a week but as so often happened, their good morning kiss got a little warmer than they planned and they ended up making slow, sweet love that was better than any sleeping pill ever invented.

After hours of deep, satisfying sleep they had awakened together. Greg felt like cooking so Nick made the bed and straightened up the bedroom, did a load of washing and by then, dinner was ready. After dinner, Nick cleaned up the kitchen while Greg got the washing out of the dryer and folded clothes. They decided to watch ‘March of the Penguins’ (one of their joint favorites). As usual, Greg got a little mushy when they got their first sight of the newly hatched baby birds and commented that they had to be the cutest little things in the world. Nick was feeling equally mushy and told Greg he bet he was the cutest little thing in the world when he was a baby because he was something special right now. After the movie, Greg began reading his latest magazine and Nick worked on his presentation and that’s where they were when Nick’s world tilted on its axis.

Nick carefully picked up his glass and put it back on the coffee table. “Uh, you think what Greg? What was it you said?”

Greg never even looked up from his magazine. “I think we ought to think about adding to our family.”

“That’s what I thought you said. How long have you been thinking about this?”

“Not that long actually. It’s not like it’s something you think about when you first get together and then there was Walter Gordon and all the fallout from that and then the house and trying to get our families settled into the idea of us as a couple. But I’ve been thinking about it for a little while now.”

Nick was struggling to keep his voice quiet and controlled. He didn’t want Greg to think he hated the idea because he didn’t but he had thought it would be quite a while before the subject came up. He knew he loved his niece’s and nephew’s and it was pretty obvious from the way Greg had got along with the youngest generation of Stokes that he was really into kids; but DAMN. He wanted his sexy, boyfriend all to himself for a while longer.

“Have you given any thought to how we go about doing this?”

“Well of course I have. I for sure don’t want to buy one; that’s just so wrong so I think adoption is the only way to go.”

“You know Greg, this could get expensive and we’ve just gotten the house and did all the repairs and we’ve got that loan from the credit union on top of our regular expenses.”

“Nick, how expensive can it be? Some furniture, some special food, sign a few legal papers and it’s a done deal.”

“I don’t think it’s going to be that easy; there’s our jobs and our ages and don’t forget we’re a gay couple. That sort of puts us outside the norm right there. Have you thought about maybe a surrogate?”

Greg almost got whiplash. “A surrogate? A surrogate? What are you talking about? Never mind that, what do you think I’m talking about?”

Nick blinked at his astounded boyfriend. “A baby?”

Greg stood there for a second and tried to say something, anything but nothing came out. Finally he snorted and then started to chuckle. A few seconds later, he was howling with laughter and literally fell down on the couch. He laughed so hard he rolled off the couch and landed on the floor. Nick waited patiently for him to recover and thought of ways to dispose of his body where it wouldn’t be found.

Eventually, the howls of laughter died down to little sputters, Greg slowly got up off the floor and tried to find something to wipe his face with. He gave up and pulled his t-shirt off and started mopping.

Nick almost caused the whole thing to start over by looking at Greg with a disgusted expression and asking him if he was through.

Greg managed to control himself and with just a slight quaver in his voice said, “my God Stokes, if you keep on making me laugh like that, I will stay with you forever.”

Nick was not amused. “I thought it was agreed when we bought the house that this was forever and I’m glad that I am such a source of entertainment for you. Would you like to enlighten me as to how I caused this?”

“You really thought I was talking about adopting a kid didn’t you?”

“What else was I supposed to think? You ask if I think our relationship is stable and then you say you want to add to our family. Of course I thought you were talking about a kid. What the hell were/are you talking about?”

“A cat Nick, actually a kitten. Well actually, two kittens so they will be company for each other.”

“A cat?” Now Nick was the one who collapsed bonelessly on the couch. “Why a cat? Why not a dog?”

“Nick, we are just beginning to learn how to take care of each other. We can’t take care of a dog. A dog is a tribal animal. He has to have human companionship to be happy and healthy. A cat doesn’t give a shit. As long as the food bowl is full, the water dish is fresh and the litter pan is clean they’re okay. If their humans are around and they fell like it, they will play with them but otherwise they don’t need us the way a dog does.”

Nick was still shaken and confused. “Then why do you want them? What has brought all this on now?”

Greg came over and sat down beside Nick. He picked up his hand and held it between his warm palms. “Nick, I just spent 5 days working with Grissom. He’s burned out completely. I’m surprised every time I come in and see him there and I’m just waiting for the announcement that’s he’s leaving. When he does you and Catherine will be the new grave supervisors. Both of you have been taking over more and more of his job for weeks now. Cath is doing most of the paper work and you’re doing most of the teaching, training and co-ordination of cases. It’s taking more and more of your time. Today was heaven but stop and think how few days we’ve had like this lately.”

Nick rapidly scanned through the last few weeks and realized how right Greg was.

“We are going to be spending more and more time apart. Who knows; they may try to make me switch shifts if you are promoted to either Lead or co-supervisor. Now you have your cabinet making to keep you occupied when I'm not around. I’m not like you. I can’t get that involved in an activity. I need something with a pulse and a heartbeat to keep my attention.”

Nick looked at his love and felt such guilt. “Greg, I never realized I was neglecting you so badly. I’m so sorry babe. I don’t have to spend time in the garage. I promise I’ll pay more attention to your needs.”

Greg pulled Nick in for a sweet kiss and said, “Nicky, you never neglect me. I know I’m always first in your thoughts and I’m not jealous of your time in the garage. I’m just telling you that I want some live companionship when you are held over at work and I’m pretty sure you don’t want me at a gay club anymore than I want to be at one.”

Nick was still a little dazed from the kiss and his voice was shaky when he said, “Then we go looking for kittens tomorrow when we get off work.”
